Men’s Basketball Struggling

to be honest first game watched this year. not sure if it was the opponent but saw a much better D than n past years with DD

Better rebounding team, better defensive team, just not shooting well yet. Could be a great season if they put it all together.

4 games into the season and some expect the Herd to be in post season form. It amazes me that in today’s world, we cannot allow the process to work and need that immediate positive result. It is a long season, enjoy the ride.

Basketball is not “struggling”. It is pretty much untested.

Tonight, versus a solid but unspectacular Sun Belt mid-packer will tell some. Indiana is a loss. The rest of the non-conference schedule will tell some.

Really, what do you need to know. Live by the 3, die by the 3, make no adjustments whatsoever, stubbornly keep to a 1970s era game plan in a way only an 80 year old can. It is what it is. We will win some we shouldn’t, we will also lose some we shouldn’t. Stay far away from the team is you are gambling.

It is what it is.

Be interesting to see how we do against Louisiana. They got crushed by IU and they were picked second in the SB behind Ga State.

Refresh my memory on the 3 point line and how we live by the three and die by the three all while playing a 70s era game plan. Do you even hear yourself?

stick to bashing eerdiots, it might be only topic you can handle.

idk - the Herd was pretty damn decent back when Danny played. I realize it was the late 60's!! I can't get over the height of the current-day players. IF the guys can start shooting just an average % of the 3's....

it’s not just the points you get from the 3s. It’s the reaction to your action. Teams are starting to give it to us and living with the results. We’re getting good looks from 3 and cant hit. There are some other aspects we need to improve on, but like you said, shooting an average % from 3 (we’re currently in the bottom 10 of the NCAA at 22%), our opponents will have to start respecting it and it will open up a lot of our other action that I promise wasn’t being ran in the 70s lol

But right now, we’re not a very good team. We’re turning the ball over too much, our 3pt defense is abysmal (our opponents have shot it 37.9%), & our steal rate has gone down about 30% (losing West will do that) from last season. Cutting down on the TOs while applying some more perimeter pressure (playing smaller lineups) would help out a lot while we find our rhythm from 3.

How is it “live by the 3 die by the 3” if you are winning games when you are not hitting your threes? And how can you have a 70’s game plan if you live by the 3 if the 3 wasn’t even around then?

you are officially hired to tutor Johns....

Listening to Dans show last night. It would be hard to not like the guy. He loves to yuk it up.

Tonight will be a good benchmark if nothing else... Louisiana couldn't throw it in the ocean against Indiana, but they are picked to be among the best teams in the Sun Belt.

Based on the last two games, we need to take less 3s for sure... Kinsey needs to take one now and again to keep his defender honest, Taylor and George can get hot but are inconsistent. Pretty much everyone else needs to knock it off.

They are lighting it up against us. 50% overall and 70% from 3. We are our normal 28% from 3. Also killing us on the boards.

Your quote (“Live by 3, die by 3”) doesn’t hold water. Points in the paint tonight was completely lopsided in The Herd’s favor 50-22.

On the season, vs Wright St, Campbell, Jackson St, & Louisiana; we have a 168-102 advantage in the paint. That’s an average of 42-25.5 per.

But, you know, someone who has such a great understanding of the game like Sam sees a bunch of 3s being shot and equates it to basketball in the 70s. Gotta love it

We turned them over at a high rate tonight. Our steaks and blocked shots are what kept them from scoring and created a bunch of runout opportunities for us.

They shot 41% from the field & 45% from 3. Going smaller helps with those turnovers, but we need to contest more & learn to not break the defense down so often. Too often we help on/off the wrong people and it’s just too easy. I know that style is what creates a lot of turnovers, but it’s just too much feast/famine for me.

It’s still early. Plenty to tight up. But what about OAK?!? Lucky to have a coach who recruits local talent, huh?

Kinsey and OAK are legit.

Will be very interesting Saturday to see if we can hang in there with Indiana. Very different styles, IU is one of the best defensive teams in the nation and we are the fun and gun upstarts.

We could speed them up and give ourselves a chance, or we could get beat by 35 like Louisiana and Jackson State.

Oak is a beast. If he stays 4 years and is healthy he will be an all time great. Needs work on outside shot and handles but man….he is good now and sky is the limit.

I just hope we can keep him 4 years. He has been the best player on the floor for us this year.

If DD is 80, as you state, that must make you about 105. He's only 74. MU bball is fun to watch. I've been watching for 56 years and have been disappointed only a few years. DD's years have not been a disappointment. You ought to look up your idol and discuss what woulda, coulda, shoulda.

don't you remember watching 3s and alley oop dunks in the 70s?? when did dunking become legal again in college late 70s? 76 or 77?

This is all you have? “They didn’t have the 3 pointer in the 70s.” That?

Correct. Duh. What they had was the exact gameplay style DD has always used. And then live and die by the 3. You do know what a comma is, right?

I’m not criticizing. It is what it is. DD, who is “only 74” is going to do what he is going to do. If the 3 is on, we can beat any other one-bid league team, especially at home. If it is off, we can get smoked. It is what it is.

What’s this gameplay style you speak of? I’d like to know specifically what we do that’s been copied from the 70s.

Danny's brother Mike has revolutionized professional basketball with this style of play. It is hardly old style.
I remember Ellis Johnson running a double screen at the top of the key for George Stone. Have you seen that recently?

how about they weren't allowed to dunk for most of the 70s either.

you are really looking foolish. you made a stupid comment and it's probably best to let the thread just roll away rather than coming back and doubling down on your idiocy.

stick to eeridiots....and maybe television.

This just tells me that you didn’t watch the game and/or really care. We certainly didn’t live by the 3 yesterday and still won against a bigger team full of portal transfers. 50 points in the paint.

It appears he hasn’t watched any basketball games. I doubt he watched in the 70s based on his foolish statements.

...............to be fair, Sam was already in his late 30's in the 70's, so he's getting on up there! So much so that if he was speaking w/DD, DD would look at him & say "yes sir" & "no sir"......we are raised up to respect our elders!!!
