Men’s Basketball Struggling

When George was on, he was an amazing shooter. If the 3 point line had been around when he played, he would probably hold most of Marshall’s scoring records.

I have heard that GS had range…deep range! True?
He was amazing from long range. His scoring average would have been so much higher with the three point line.
I remember playing Toledo at the Field House when they were rated in the top 20. Stone was shooting lights out.
He had a chance for snowbird layup with no Toledo player between him and the basket. He stopped from, what seemed like, 30 feet and hit nothing but net. The fans erupted.

Bunny Gibson was the same. Would have had 70 points had the 3 point line been in play.

"Those in attendance at that game estimate that close to 20 of those field goals came from what would have been 3-point distance and that he would have scored close to 70 points had that rule been in effect."

Danny's brother Mike has revolutionized professional basketball with this style of play. It is hardly old style.
I remember Ellis Johnson running a double screen at the top of the key for George Stone. Have you seen that recently?
Just think what George Stones scoring average would have been if they had a 3point line

Well Marshall's next game against Indiana and being on the road will tell us how well the team plays as a unit and with stands a very good team. Win or lose against Indiana we will lean a lot over the next three games and how the season could unfold.

Came to say this about Bunny Gibson. You beat me to it. That game he went for 50 would have been much higher.

The bio from HerdZone states that it was estimated that 20 of his 22 baskets were 3-point range. That validates your 70 point estimate. Also…in the 77-78 season he was 84 for 89 at the foul line for 94.4%, good for an ncaa best at the time.

Man…wouldn’t he have been a great piece in the D’Antoni system.

This is all you have? “They didn’t have the 3 pointer in the 70s.” That?

Correct. Duh. What they had was the exact gameplay style DD has always used. And then live and die by the 3. You do know what a comma is, right?

I’m not criticizing. It is what it is. DD, who is “only 74” is going to do what he is going to do. If the 3 is on, we can beat any other one-bid league team, especially at home. If it is off, we can get smoked. It is what it is.
Our 3 hasn't been on at all this year and we've only lost once. That's hardly getting smoked.

I remember one game when unruly fans threw coins on the floor because they disagreed with a call. George walked around during the timeout and picked up the change. He put the coins in the top of his socks.

Doubt if its available, but if it were and you could find it, check film/tape of the NIT matchup back in the mid/late 60s of the HERD team's, with Stone, dismantling of Nebraska to the tune of 119-76 in a Madison Square Garden game. You'd get your answer PRONTO! If unavailable, might see if WSAZ-TV., Channel 3, in Huntington has clips of highlights of said game in their Sports archives

I had Akron down as a loss, but they come in with only one Div I win, over 3-6 Evansville, although they opened the season with a one point should have won at Ohio State which just beat Satan’s team last night.

Should be worth watching.

How in the world they lost that game is beyond me. Had it won and just made too many bad plays in the last minute. That last possession was so bad and then to give a frustration foul to let them win it.

Lack of inside strength and smarts with our big men, will haunt us all season going against even an average team.

Got nothing out of OAK tonight. We need more than Kinsey and Taylor. Plus Taylor got over anxious in the last minute with 2 fouls, one on defense and one after he missed a shot
