Down by 13 at the half to Newberry?? Apparently DD's run and gun style doesn't have any room for PLAYING DEFENSE!! Oh, well, part of Hammy's "do it on the cheap" philosophy. Go out and bring in a bunch of foreign "projects" and some NAIA and D2 caliber in state players (Mountain East Conference type players).

Oh well, maybe I'm wrong. Perhaps Dshoe can tell us that Newberry is scheduled to be the very Best college basketball team in the entire state of South Carolina this season. If not, and we lose this game in embarrassing fashion plus the first two regular season games at Tennessee and Morehead State, then the Herd can expect a crowd of around 3500 to 4000, the usual die hard kool aid drinkers, for the home opener!

And exactly why would I do that? And why the remark? I'm not the one of those that have been giving the daily updates on how great our basketball was going to be. I'm one of the most realistic people on this board with respect to where our teams fall in the grand scheme of college sports. When is the last time you saw a comment from me overstating our competitiveness?

Radford beat Georgetown in 2OT; Alabama State beat Virginia Tech and Western Illinois beat Wisconsin. It's early. Relax...it's a long season. Too many on this board succumb to both unrealistic expectations and snap judgements.

And those were real games!!! This was an exhibition! A non-counter

My bad, dshoe. Just figured you were in the know when it came to all things Carolina in sports. And I know your interest in the Herd and share the hope that some of us oldtimers have that one day in the not so distant future MU can put out a competent, respected college basketball program. Many on here would not believe that in the mid sixties to early seventies MU was known as a BASKETBALL school. But, in reality, Hamrick's career track record has been abysmal when it comes to basketball hires. That has continued at MU, with the Herrion hire, based mainly on his relationship with Herrion's brother, Bill, at ECU. Like some, I was/am hopeful for some improvement this season, perhaps even a .500 season or so. But unless someone can confirm that Newberry is a D-2 powerhouse. the Herd may not get out of single digit wins this winter!

Good lord Olde - Maybe time to push away from the keyboard for a couple of days.....I find I am not so
b!tchy after the break.

Go HERD !!!

Good to know that there are those perfectly willing to accept abject mediocrity as the 'norm" for some Herd sports, like basketball!

I like how we are already dogging the WV talent when the best 2 (of the 3) on scholarship didn't take the floor today but hey keep pushing that narrative. Not to mention Kelly didn't play either. Nobody should be expecting a CUSA title, if we get to .500 I will be happy. This group at full strength can be competitive. Tonight was bad but it doesn't count and will hopefully inspire better efforts down the road.

Look, anybody could see that we were playing three freshmen WV walk-ons and the two new foreign kids for just about the entire game. No more that two starters were on the floor at anytime. I told Newberry's coach that after the game. Danny was just giving them a feel for some playing time and how they would perform under a little pressure. My money is on Noah Frampton to come in and help out, especially late in a game. He is also trying to decide which of the new foreign kids to redshirt. And why give Tennessee a preview of what we've got? Free-throw shooting does, however, remain a concern.

Newberry. 1,042 students. D2. I don't care who was getting playing time. You should win this game. Exhibition or not!

Those are DI teams not small DII from SC.

The BB game was as bad as the football game was good.

Too many missed shots, played defense every so often, and no big man to rebound. Other than that, fun to watch,,,,NOT

The old fast break Danny talks about needs a good rebounding team able to make a quick outlet pass to streaking runners headed for our basket. IMO we don't have the players for this style game.

I don't care what combination of players we had on the floor this afternoon, it was hard to watch.

Dan D'Antoni will be seen as the worst hire in Marshall Sports history

He isnt willing to put effort into recruiting, instead opting for what is obtainable and close

I'd say it's a little early to make that prediction. Besides, if he beats WVU this year, the season will be considered a success.

They are a very good D2, but a D2 nonetheless

Same attitude Michigan had just before Appy visited a few yrs back. Ever Herd of UK vs Tx Western?

Ummm...Texas Western vs Kentucky was the last game of the year and for the national championship. Not really a good analogy. :(

Western was a top three team all year with a terrific starting five, they were unknown to those that only follow the name on the jersey.

If three of our top eight players didn't dress, they better be really good when they do dress !!!!!!!!!!!

Point is the little guy does win even when the big guy is at full strength. Take 40% of the team off of FB and see how we do. Same deal. You can act as tho those three guys wouldn't have made a big diff but the money says they would have.

I'll not sell my season tickets yet....I'll wait and see if they live up to the hype.

The first part above is sarcasm....Have had season tickets for close to 30 years and will always renew and cheer for the Herd, but at my age getting tired of "greatness is just around the corner" talk.

NO THEY ARE NOT. They have been average at best the last few years, but were really bad before that.

They haven't even made the NCAA Tournament since I started following D2 basketball close to 10 years ago.

Good D2s would be teams such as Slippery Rock, Glenville, Fairmont, Wheeling-Jesuit.

Great D2's would be teams such as West Liberty and even IUP to some extent.

West Liberty and IUP would both beat Marshall in basketball and the West Lib game wouldn't even be close.

Truth is hard to swallow sometimes I guess.

We just got rocked by a below average D2 team. No reason to think that perennial powers in D2 would not also beat us easily.

The very style Marshall is TRYING to run, is the same style that West Liberty has perfected.

Keep telling yourselves that Newberry is a good D2 school, but the facts say otherwise.

Alright, I would not be making any rash judgements based upon a shitty exhibition game, where we rarely played any of our starting five. How about until we wait until at least a couple games into the season before we start claiming that Shepard University is gonna come down to Huntington and kick our ass.

So happy olde's generation is dwindling...and flyhawk is isolated in his little realm of d2 basketball, which is about the effectiveness equivalent of a Polish military vehicle so we need not read this idiocy any longer.
Hell, I remember when the Baltimore Orioles scrimmaged a community college...AND LOST. By idiot olde's logic, Baltimore wouldn't win a single game and the organization made a terrible hire.
Hawk's logic is if Baltimore had played Northern VA community college, the Orioles would have been murdered.

Forgetting that Baltimore split half their team up to play alongside the CC team.

Olde, calm down before you shoot in your pants...the team will be fine. The bashing of Hamrick as though it is somehow his fault is laughable as well.
Nobody seems to give a flying (pun intended) fuc.k about D2. Sorry NacyHawk, we are D1 and will always have that distinction over West-nobodygivesashitaboutthem-Liberty. The mere fact you tout D2 on a D1 board is like you bringing a Desert Eagle to a gun fight.

Except yours says 'Replica' along the side of it and ours says ".50" along side of ours.

Oh...and the Orioles won the AL East.

I brought up D2 for a few reasons.

#1- We just lost to a D2 school.

#2- Someone tried to claim that Newberry was a good D2 school. That claim is not even close to the truth. I'm not even sure you could consider them average, but was nice enough to say they were average.

#3- Cool beans, Marshall is D1, yes we have that "distinction." In the end, that distinction doesn't matter because it obviously does not make us a better team. It should, but it doesn't.

In addition to all of this,

flyhawk is isolated in his little realm of d2 basketball, which is about the effectiveness equivalent of a Polish military vehicle so we need not read this idiocy any longer.

What does that make Marshall basketball then? Considering we couldn't even beat a broke down equivalent of a Polish military vehicle. You're most likely someone that never even played sports in school so I completely understand your ignorance when it comes to sports.

As to everyone else. I am on the Marshall bandwagon, and I believe in what DD is trying to do. But the truth of the matter is, we are about the equivalent of a good D2 school, and obviously still show up as a bad D2 school from time to time. Doesn't mean I don't support The Herd. Just means we are no where close to where we want to be, or where we could be.

I also believe Marshall would have won with all of our players on the floor. Yes, there is a BIG dropoff from your top 3 guys on the team, to the 12th-15th best guys on a team.

Plus, not many people in D2 have a Kelly, so he would have been an insane athletic mismatch for Newberry.

LOL....keep em coming bro!

Shows you have nothing intelligent to add to the conversation. Not sure why I expected anything different.
