MU President Finalists Announced

Just strictly from an athletic standpoint, I vote for the Mississippi State guy.....

This is a huge hire guys. If Marshall gets this wrong we as a university and athletics dept are in a world of hurt. This is probably the most important hire we will see for many years. One wrong move and the school will be in trouble.

I personally would have liked to have seen the school go after some bigger "names" from big schools although Miss St. is a big name. Schools we would like to emulate.

Dr. Maples from the Oregon Institute of Technology sounds like an interesting candidate. With a background in leading an engineering school he may be able to help push Marshall to a different level with the new engineering program starting up and how that can tie in to other programs at Marshall.

All three being out of the hard science area is interesting. Clearly, this is the direction that the BOG sees the school moving towards. That is a radical departure from where the university was not a half a generation ago. And a good sign.

Although it is worth noting that we don't even offer degrees in these guy's specific areas of study.

The only sports related thing I can find is that Maples is a member of the Society of American Baseball Research, which is a hobby that applies academic level study to baseball from statistics (the Bill James books you might be familiar with) to history to materials science and so on. A guy that likes baseball cannot hurt.

This is the most important hire in 20 years here. WV higher ed is in a decline and MU needs a powerful defender against our enemy.

Just because a person worked at Yale doesn't mean they would be a good president for a rural state university. The guys from Mississippi woukd understand our situation and problems better than the "big schools". And please name one big name person from higher Ed you would like to see

Quitter???

Yea Bobby Pruett takes the cake there. Almost as good of a quit job as Chris Smith

Quitting on your Alumna Mater a week before Spring Ball negates all of that. Lying to your 2005 signing class that you expect to be at Marshall all their years here, quitting on your players who was working hard during Off-season training negates all of that.

Im sorry, I just cant respect quitters. I don't care how and why he quit, at the end of the day, he quit

So if Doc leaves in March is he a quitter?

Yup, but Doc has more class then that. You don't sign a class of recruits, start getting ready for Spring ball to just up and quit on your fellow players and coaches. Not even give them a warning or anything and just leave the entire program high and dry because the BOG didn't give you everything you wanted right away

Not trying to, and I'm not changing my mind on his coaching abilities either. And if Doc gets entertained by Miami he's gone imho.

Doc is not close to the top of the line for Miami

That job will come down to James Coley the current OC, Lane Kiffen, and Mario Christobal who is the favorite

BP - I can think of a $$million$$ reasons why
he became a quitter. Annuity matured and
"aw shucks" Bobby was outta there. Then there
was the 4 month stint @ UVA to get his Virginia teachers retirement. I am not against someone
doing the latter. I have a big problem with the circumstances surrounding the former......
WS

I say Gilbert or Maples, leaning more towards Gilbert. The Wiesenburg guy doesnt seem to have the executive experience as the other two. And I agree with a few others that Gilberts work in Mississippi he will better understand the challenges here (as well as the importance of sports to MU)

Three...old...white guys.... I'm sure the cocktail conversation will be riveting. Another mediocre hire. Way to hit average. Keith Spears should have been brought back. He understands and knows fundraising, branding and marketing. He was the champion of making a chant into a major motion picture. Problem was he was taking too much of the limelight from Kopp. Or they should have recruited either Gaston Caperton or Bob Wise. Big hitters, big personalities, not administrators. The role of the President these days is 1) fundraising, 2) fundraising and 3) fundraising. The University can run itself with the number of vice-Presidents/ Provosts and administrators it has. The BOG is too parochial (as is most of Marshall's boards and supporters). Needs to be divided evenly between local, regional, national and international.

Gaston Caperton or Bob Wise.

Gascap: Probably second only to Rockefailure as the most anti-Marshall governor ever. Has only a nominally earned BA in being born rich from UNC, no advanced degrees. If not born rich, would probably be waiting tables in downtown Charleston. Never had a job in his life outside politics, other than "running" daddy's company. Currently obviously in the middle of Alzheimer's, or the basic effects of a life in the liquor bottle. Never sharp, he is currently unable to form a complete sentence.

Jackpot Bob: Born rich. Never had a job in his life outside politics, except bartender. Failed one-term governor. Only a law degree, not a real doctorate. No relationship to Marshall. Currently could not get elected county clerk.

WVU, which can afford to make mistakes we never could in 1000 years, embarrassed itself with an insider Charleston politician lawyer, and he was, at least, nominally qualified (had done some non-degree work at Oxford) and had had actual jobs with actual responsibility.

Pass.

If you want a politician, get Mennis Ketchum to quit the Supreme Court. Him or ex-Kentucky gov Paul Patton, who did great things at Pikeville.

Whoever the next president is needs to grow enrollment . Love Marshall born Marylander . The top priority needs to be how to figure out a better way to grow our enrollment not only would it be better for the state, city of Huntington , school and yes football. Too many years we have been stagnant even as our campus has become more and more attractive . Nows the time to capitalize on our success .

A former West Virginia politician who is Republican is the answer for Marshall. One with Marshall ties. The key is who you know, not what you know. Even Bob Plymale would be better than these old, white, boring guys. Menus Ketchum would be great. Nick Rahall would be great. People with personality, charisma and can sell and fundraise. Implement modern recruiting model. Keith Spears is perfect. This is a different era. These guys will be trustees. Nothing more. Hell, Rick Thomoson would be good.

Thompson. Rusty Webb in Charleston. Current interim President Gary White. Paul Ferrell in Huntington, former interim President. Robin Capehart, former West Liberty President. Think out of the "ivory tower" box. Too many "connected" talented people in WV to appoint nothing more than a trustee administrator.

Mike Hall, Senate Finance Chair, Marshall supporter and alumnus. Jim Justice if he is not elected Governor.
