MU President Finalists Announced

A former West Virginia politician who is Republican is the answer for Marshall. One with Marshall ties. The key is who you know, not what you know. Even Bob Plymale would be better than these old, white, boring guys. Menus Ketchum would be great. Nick Rahall would be great. People with personality, charisma and can sell and fundraise. Implement modern recruiting model. Keith Spears is perfect. This is a different era. These guys will be trustees. Nothing more. Hell, Rick Thomoson would be good.

For real, Insider? Every hack Democrat who have been part of the regime that for last 60+ years have led this state to the bottom of the barrel looking up at the other 49 states!

Nick (the nothing) Rahall? Really? Nearly 40 damn years in Congress and every county in his 4th, later 3rd, Congressional District, declined in population and every quality of life factor you can think of during his illustrious tenure!! Playboy Nick, who spend his undergrad years at Duke partying, and then needing some form of employment, got a job in Senator Byrd's office as a "flunky", no thanks to his Dad's $$$ and contributions to Byrd.

Hell, if you also don't like the make-up of our Board of Governors, well, then thank Blow Joe Manchin and the current bumbling occupant of the Governor's Manchin, Jimmy Joe Willie Ray Bob Tomblin, the career political hack from the cesspool slime know as Logan County. These 2 appointed the members of the Boards of Governors of the State Universities and colleges. Right now there several on the MU board whose terms expired in 2014 yet the sorry, lazy Tomblin hasn't had time or interest to fill said positions. So the candidates MU ends up for president were in essence picked by the current board's political appointees and a few other politically connected folks thrown in on the search committee!

Herd insider Why do you feel the need to bring race into this argument? Have you met any of the three candidates or are you basing your opinion on them just being old and white?

I know every situation (other schools) is different, but IMO the committee has really
failed to identify the kind of candidate they needed to. We needed a home run & appear to be settling for a bunt single. Case in point:
Private school in NC, High Point University.
About the same time we hired Kopp, they hired
Dr. Nido Qubein. He has transformed that school from a sleepy little small college into
a destination choice for students. Whoever stated earlier that the 3 most important jobs for the President are: #1 fundraising #2 fundraising & #3 fundraising nailed it. Qubein has a Provost to run the academic side & he is the rain maker,
That is what we needed in order to continue the momentum from Kopp, & unfortunatley we apparently are not going to get it. If you have a few minutes, check out an interview w/President Qubein.
He is quite the spellbinder !

Once again how do you know that any of these three men aren't like Dr Qubein? You guys know what they say about assuming.
You could be exactly right but we just don't know. And comparing a private school that is $31,000 a year just for tuition to one that's state run and is half of that it's exactly a fair comparison

I realize that herdfan429, which is why I started with "every situation is different". Just saying the type of person we are looking for is probably not a career academic. That is all......

.........and before anyone else says it, of course
I realize that Dr. Kopp was a career academic himself before assuming the Presidency. But,
if we can agree that Steve Kopp was a once in a lifetime career academic who just so happened to possess "it" (ala Doc's description
of @chaseboogiexiv), then my point stands.
If you could identify someone who has actually succeeded in both the business world & the world of academia, then you have the guy (or gal) who can take what SJK accomplished & go to the next level in terms of vision, raising capital & propelling MU into an ultra-competitive alternative for the 8-10,000 or so students we need to grow the base & ensure a prosperous Marshall (& therefore Huntington) going well into the future.
Sorry for the run-on sentence; couldn't find a good place to break it up!Would love to hear a differing opinion; this is such a critical juncture for our alma mater....
