It’s not the coach’s job to be the best football player on the team. This is the misconception of a leaders role.First, I don’t believe there is something inherently wrong with our military. I’m sure there are opportunities to improve but that doesn’t mean it’s broken and isn’t still the finest fighting force on the planet.
Knowing this board, I know the “military is woke” comments are coming. I call BS and find that to be disrespectful to those in our military who aren’t “woke” and are there for all the right reasons doing all the right things.
Because of the above, I respect our military, their chain of command and the very thorough training and ascension process. There is a decade or more of military tactic and personnel management training for generals in our military, none of which Hegseth has gone through.
Related to that, I consider it a slap in the face to the thousands of soldiers who rank above and are more qualified. You are asking men who have devoted entire lifetimes to our country to now report to a National Guard, television host from the middle management ranks.
Other than two deployments of around a year each, Hegseth a National Guardsman who never served as a full time soldier. He has had almost no military training related to management and doesn’t truly understand the life of a full time soldier. Hegseth is articulate and spews all the rhetoric so many of you love to hear but that doesn’t make him our best option.
Trump chose him because he’s enamored by his television persona, and his cult like admiration, nothing more. So now, we’ve manufactured all these reasons as to why he’s the most qualified but there are thousands of full-time soldiers that meet all those same criteria, are ranked higher, and have vastly more training and experience.
Leadership, which is what this position really is, not a manager, is about setting a culture and vision and putting people with the desire to buy in and promote that vision and culture.
In large organizations you don’t actually get to people with true technical expertise until level 3 of the organizational chart, sometimes even further down. If the Secretary of Defense is ever drawing up battle plans or something like that you either have the worst micromanager of all time or a nuclear bomb has taken out the rest of the Pentagon.
The proof that our military has major problems is clear in the drastic fall off in recruiting and retention. You will be proven inaccurate in your take.
