NHR: Alderson-Broaddus College Set to Possibly Close

Isn’t Martha Stewart an alum if there ?

This is going on all over the state. Less people = less students. And many WV small colleges, public and private, are becoming so small that it is really impossible to get all the credits needed to graduate in four years w/o doing a lot of it on line (often from MU) because the classes are never really offered.

Don't really care about the private schools. Sucks for them, but its private. Hopefully, the next governor will lead the state forward by facilitating the closure of many public colleges. We have too many, and many are at the joke academic level.

Our President Smith could lead one heck of a consolation. Marshall could take over all colleges south of Parkersburg. How is that for thinking out of the box.

Alderson Broaddus has a Sprint Football team. Most people are unaware this league even exists although it’s been around since the 1930’s. No one over 178 pounds is eligible to play.

Their game with Army last year is on YouTube:

Isn’t AB private? Why is the state involved in this?
The state (the Higher Education Policy Commission) has the power to regulate private colleges to the extent that they are legitimate and financially stable. Its consumer protection. Would you want to show up for class one day and see the sheriff auctioning off the desks?

They really have not done their job very well. They let some jackleg guy take over the legitimate Beckley College, rename it "Mountain State University" and make it into a diploma mill. They were offering on line joke classes all over the world, including in health care fields, which were 100% fake. IMHO, Salem is pretty much the same thing, you can get an MBA in 11 months on your cell phone from them. There was also a place called Ohio Valley in Parkersburg, which went broke and left its students holding the bag. It took a lot of banks taking haircuts and other financial slight of hand to keep Wheeling College going, and, IMHO, it will eventually go broke. The Catholic Church washed its hands of the place, as I understand it, and it is being run by alumni and locals from up there. It won't last.

All of these moves to keep these places going are really just a waste of resources. The state is emptying, and we have WAY too many colleges, both public and private.

What you say makes cents!
I thought an earlier faux paus trying to say “consultation” which spelled “consolation” sums it up: Brad Smith should console these other schools and bid them adieu.
MU has plenty more than enough fish to fry w/o trying to prop up failing in-state schools.

That is pretty neat, it looks like the weight limit used to be 150 lbs before they increased it due to Americans becoming fat asses. I could have played without getting absolutely destroyed.

Sam is right... The state as a whole has too many colleges that its basically a community college system under the guise of legitimate university education.

With WVU, Marshall, Fairmont State, Charleston, Bluefield State, all seemingly being in good financial position and offering legitimate degrees in a variety of fields, the state would do well to shutter some of the others and invest in the 5-6 schools that are fulfilling their mission.

"Last week, word started to leak publicly that Alderson Broaddus, a Division II program in West Virginia, was facing their utilities being shut down because of failure to pay its water, sewer, and electrical services.

Adam Nelson reported back on July 26th that the overdue payments totaled more than $776,598, and that the utilities would be shut off this morning at 10am if the bill wasn't paid.

That was just the latest sign that the school was facing very serious financial issues.

Today, more unfortunate news arrived, as the Higher Education Policy Commission unanimously revoked the school's authority to award degrees, effective December 31, 2023.

That means AB will not be allowed to enroll new students beginning the Fall of 2023 semester, but seniors scheduled to graduate at the end of the fall term may return to school to complete their degrees on-time.

In fact, the HEPC's decision means that no current students outside of those seniors, may return to campus to pursue their degrees.

That means an end to all athletic and extracurricular activities at Alderson Broaddus."

A-B board voted not to fight the matter out in court and go ahead and comply with the state's orders.

- How does a school of 750 students run up a water and sewer bill of $750K? If I don't pay, they send the man out to shut it off, but how much water can 750 kids use? Was someone watering the lawn 24/7?

- Apparently A-B has a $28M "loan" collateral free from the US government. The Agriculture Department, of all places. This program "loans" money never expected to be paid back to these private colleges under the idiotic idea that it help out "rural development". Here is a news flash. If you can attend a private college, you are not in need of government assistance. Attend the public university in your own state and major in a useful skill.

- My idea WV state college system would include a much reformed WVU and Marshall at the top, with 100% non-residential schools for kids that don't want to leave mommy and who really are not Marshall or WVU material at WV State, Fairmont State, WVU Parkersburg (which should be renamed, it has nothing to do with WVU, some long deal politician up there got it renamed decades ago), and Bluefield State. Along with much reformed small colleges with some dorm space at Concord, Shepherd, and West Liberty, to cover the kids at the edges of the state. All, actually still more than, we need and can support.

1. Legalize recreational marijuana.

2. Repurpose AB as a marijuana agriculture school. Pay off debts without taxpayer help...because you know those utilities will want their money.

3. Nearby Elkins becomes the Asheville of the Mid Atlantic.

4. Raoul Duke moves back to Barbour County, establishes large marijuana farm named Sinsemilla Hills. Raoul no longer complains about the 105° summers in Kansas.
