Some of my neighbors make fun of me because I’m the only one in the neighborhood who doesn’t plop his ass on a big tractor to mow grass. I have many beds and plantings that lend themselves to a gasoline push machine. I also pledged I would never ride as long as I could walk.
This spring, I decided the time had come to look at a small riding mower. Keeping up over an acre of land with a push type mower was becoming overwhelming.
I looked online at several small mowers then went to the closest “big box store.” I asked one of the clerks where they had moved the riding mowers.
He answered, “We don’t have any. Sold out.”
I asked when they would be receiving more.
“Probably late summer,” he said.
When I asked why there was such a problem getting machines, he told me, “The manufacturers are having a hard time hiring people to assemble the mowers. No one wants to work.”

It is true. They are still paying people not to work. We saw the mother of a girl that my son went to high school with. We asked what she was doing. Well she was working in the diner at the federal govt complex. Got laid off when China virus hit. She is getting the double dip bonus unemployment. For a year or more. Her mother said why would she work?

Help wanted signs all around.

America is a deck of cards ready to crumble.

Perhaps the clerk is full of malarkey. I just got on the local Lowes website and you can have several of their riding lawn mowers delivered to your local store in 1-3 weeks and they have 3 in stock right now. Sounds like the box stores just aren't keeping them in stock.

Wow. 3 in stock. That's a lot for a store that probably does 50 million a year in sales.

There are other issues like supply chain issues but I know finding help right now anywhere is tough.

Could be. I am going by what the clerk (manager) of the lawn equipment department told me.
I did find it unusual that there was not a riding machine in the store ( this was a Lowe’s). Usually there are six or eight machines inside and twice as many displayed out in front of the store.

It is amazing. I live in a rural area, but it seems every business has a “help wanted” sign in the window. I noticed the local Shoney’s, that has been closed for over a year, had information on their marquee sign about scheduling employment appointments.
Unemployment should be near zero. If you want a job, you shouldn’t have to try too hard to find one.

I have a customer thst could hire 20 more people right now.

That is just one example. The need to end this unemployment charade and shut Fauci up

I think these stores are loving it. Why hire people when most people are just coming in to look and then order online anyway?

I just bought a new vehicle and they barely had any on the lot. You can order whatever the hell you want and it’ll be there in 4-6 weeks. Just a few salesman walking around, one finance guy in the office, with a few young guys just out of high school who do all their running. There were people sitting in the lobby waiting to buy, sign papers, etc. Moving product with half the staff and not having to manage the upkeep on product in the lot. Looks like smart business to me.

What do they pay those positions??
True, most positions being advertised are entry level positions, but you have to start somewhere. This reminds me of the story of the new employee who was holding up his cell phone to his boss during a meeting.
“What is it you want?” asked the boss.
“It’s my mother,” the employee said. “She wants to know why I have been working here six months, and I’m not a Vice President.”

Not sure that this applies to lawnmowers, but it might..,

We have a close friend that does supply chain between Chinese factories and big retailers like Wal Mart. It’s a family run company his dad started 30 years ago and they’ve went from start up to gazillionares over the years. (Aside: I personally have a lot of issues with China to US goods but he shared this with me)...

He says shipping at ports is a nightmare. A big ocean container (a “can” as they called it on the wire) used to be about $4000 or so. He said they’re going for $20k now. He said watch out for big jumps in cost on your ecery day Wal mart goods.

That has far more to do with the state of the vehicle industry right now more than it does a dealership trying to save a few bucks. A dealership will do far better paying employees to be at the store while having a few lot for advertising/marketing reasons and being able to get a buyer in the car that day than they will saving a few dollars on payroll.

This is the worst time to buy a car than we’ve seen in the past decade. That applies to both dealers and consumers.

They are usually two man crews. Experienced crew chief 25 to 30 an hour sometimes more.. Travel pay or per diem. Overtime. Benefits.if they travel they are pulling six figures a year.

Crew member depending on experience. Entry level 17 to 20 an hour. Experience can go above 20.

Many are trying to hire inexperienced people and teach them if they are willing to learn a s work hard.

There are lots of supply chain issues now. You can guess where a lot of of this stuff comes from or components to make products. It takes one component not being available. Then the moron governor out in California shut the ports down for a long while..the list goes on

Rifle said there aren't help wanted signs all around. I told him I travelled my county and found help wanted signs everywhere. He called BS.

So, they have to travel. Spend time away from home? What line of work is it?

Some do some don't. Depends on the company. Usually better pay for those. I would say those that do are making more than $30 an hour plus getting paid for travel because it is overnight, etc.

What do you mean by "depends on the company"?? Are we no longer talking about your customer that would hire 20 more people right now??
I was giving you industry average wages for our area(that is probably close to a nationwide avg). I was also saying some companies work locally some don't and travel. They are all in the same boat regardless. They can't find help and most are trying to hire people. The company I mentioned specially does travel. Their crew chiefs are going to make six figures. Some are making 150k a year. New hire is not going to make that obviously

I didn't ask for an industry average, moron. I asked how much the positions paid for your customer that would hire 20 people right now. You've lied from the beginning of this conversation. Stop it.

shut up idiot. they are major customer of mine. I told you. They want to hire 10 more 2 man crews. I told you what they pay . I told you crew chief and the entry level wage for the other party member. They also get paid for travel. I gave you what other companies typically pay and you asked if they travel some do it and some don't. i have sold this company hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment. The do work for a company that you may have heard of you know like something in like a major river in the South of the world. You know like Prime time?

here is what i told you

You just call everybody a liar when you have nothing else. And, you just can't imagine people making a good wage or having to pay a good wage. Hell, nobody in my division where i work makes less than $15 an hour and that includes the entry level people they hire.

People around here are hiring all over the place.

Shipping containers have been an issue for the past couple of years. We export products to Asia and Europe and have had problems having them available when needed. There’s actually a worldwide shortage.

I’ve been with my current employer since 1987, I’ve never seen the supply chain having as many issues as we currently are seeing. There’s pricing instability as well as availablity issues causing greatly increased lead times. At a time when business is very strong, this creates lots of headaches!

we are having issues as well. We might have a $10,000 piece of equipment sold and have it in inventory but we can't get a $200 bracket that is necessary. Driving us crazy. Our batteries that we sell have doubled in price in a year. We got with one of our manufacturers about a product and they said they can't get the glue(that meets their specs) to finish assembly. Crazy things like that.

In addition, all the customers have got into a mode of wait until the last minute to order and then need things. We just can't hardly meet those expectations right now. Many times, it is even hard to tell them when we can get things. Guessing game.

Yep, same issues all over it seems. We normally carry ample inventories to shield our customers from long lead times. We are finding it harder to consistently meet those expectations they have come to have. It’s a big adjustment for us and our customers! We’ve had several instances where we found out last minute something wasn’t coming as promised and they couldn’t give us a ship date! Fortunately, those were few and the delays ended up being minimal.

You still haven't told me the pay for the 20 open positions that I specifically asked for, moron. You gave me industry average wages for your area. You're a lying idiot.

I just went past the local Ace Hardware here in Wayne. 2 riding mowers sitting next to the street for sale.

Sir, this is what their company is paying for those positions. It depends on the individual and their experience. This is what they specifically pay. Not each person is going to make the same exact amount. You could have a crew chief that is licensed and one that is not. You could have a crew chief that has 20 years experience and on that has 10. They might want one guy bad enough to pay him more or not.

I don't know how to be any clearer for you. There company has more than 1500 employees.

You are failing to understand or being combative.
