PFF Offense: Week 1 vs. Norfolk State

Welcome to PFF grades for Marshall’s 2022 season. The Thundering Herd opened the new campaign with a dominating 55-3 win over Norfolk State. With 43 different players being credited with playing at least one offensive snap, grade reporting will only look those who tallied 20 snaps or more. Keep in mind that with the snaps spread so thinly, many of the overall grades will be a bit skewed. If there are any individual grades you would like to see beyond those who are reported, feel free to ask.

For week one, Marshall’s top graded offensive player was Tyshawn Hurst with a grade of 81.7 on 21 snaps. I know that this question will be asked, and if you throw snap counts aside, Cam Fancher would have the Thundering Herd’s top grade at 89.0 on eight snaps.

Now for a look at how the rest of the offense performed.

Quarterback:
Much has been made of Henry Colombi’s inaugural performance, especially regarding his completion percentage (92.3%). Colombi was 24 of 26 passing for 205 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also had six carries for 11 yards on the ground. Despite such an accurate performance, Colombi finished with a composite PFF grade of 60.5. His NFL passer rating for week one would have been 96.3.

Running Backs:
Khalan Laborn led Marshall’s stable of running backs receiving a grade of 65.2 while playing 35 snaps. Statistically, Laborn finished with 12 carries for 102 yards and two touchdowns, while adding one reception for seven yards. Ethan Payne, who carried ten times for 113 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 28 yards, was graded at 54.8.

Wide Receivers:
Talik Keaton who had eight catches for 71 yards finished with the top grade among the Thundering Herd’s wide receivers with a 60.7 on 38 snaps. Keaton was followed by Corey Gammage, who received a grade of 55.7 (46 snaps), and Caleb McMillan at 55.3 (24 snaps). Shadeed Ahmed also played 24 snaps and graded at 53.9, while Charles Montgomery was on the field for 27 plays and scored a grade of 51.4.

Tight Ends:
As what became a common theme throughout the 2021 season, Devin Miller received the highest grade among Marshall’s tight ends against Norfolk State at 60.7 on 38 snaps (four catches for 39 yards). In fact, Miller was the only Marshall tight end who played more than 20 snaps. Looking at the rest of the tight end corps is interesting, however. Stacey Marshall, Jr. – 64.9 on 19 snaps; Rahmod Smith – 57.7 on 17 snaps; Toby Payne – 59.6 on 14 snaps.

Offensive Line:
As noted above, Tyshawn Hurst led Marshall’s offense with a grade of 81.7 (78.7 run block, 69.2 pass block) on 21 snaps. Next in line were Kendrick Sartor at 70.9 (65.5 run block, 78.9 pass block) on 51 snaps and Ethan Driskell at 66.3 (66.4 run block, 61.0 pass block) on 54 snaps. Steven Faucheux played 21 snaps and received a grade of 64.1 (63.2 run block, 71.5 pass block), while Dalton Tucker was on the field for 35 snaps and graded at 63.6 (61.1 run block, 74.8 pass block). Other offensive line grades of note: Trent Holler – 60.0 on 58 snaps; Logan Osburn – 58.7 on 55 snaps.
