While the defense shined, the Marshall offense struggled to get much going outside of Khalan Laborn's running ability and Cam Fancher's speed outside of the pocket, posting just one player above a 75 PFF and two players above a 65 PFF in the Herd's 12-0 victory over Old Dominion Saturday.
A complete rundown of grades are below:
QUARTERBACK:
While Fancher struggled through the air as compared to the week prior against Coastal Carolina (just 13-of-25 for 89 yards with two picks against Old Dominion), the redshirt freshman's running ability was huge as Fancher notched 136 yards on 18 carries to notch 225 yards of total offense and help Marshall come away with the victory. Fancher posted a 60.3 PFF grade but his run PFF grade was a 70.3 -- the second-highest on the unit behind Laborn.
RUNNING BACKS:
Out of the backfield, the running back position easily performed the best of the entire offensive group, with Laborn coming up huge once again with 139 yards on 31 carries en route to easily posting the highest offensive PFF grade with a 79.5.
In doing so, Laborn notched the best running grade -- surprise, surprise -- with an 80.3 PFF mark and even posted the fourth-highest pass blocking mark at 73.4, ahead of starting offensive linemen Logan Osburn and Kendrick Sartor.
Ethan Payne (64.8 PFF) and A.J. Turner (63.3 PFF) also saw time in the contest.
WIDE RECEIVERS:
As a whole, the inconsistent season from the wideouts continued as the struggle to establish a complete passing game from the signal-calling position continues to hinder the Herd's offense.
EJ Horton led Marshall with four catches, but the Louisville, Ky. native had just 28 yards on those catches and posted a 59.7 overall PFF grade. Shadeed Ahmed notched the highest overall PFF mark of anybody in the receiving core at 69.2 PFF, but he only played in 12 snaps and had just one catch for 10 yards.
Three of the next four receivers on the PFF grade chart -- Stone Scarcelle, Bryan Robinson, and Caleb Coombs -- played in 16 combined plays and didn't record a catch while only grading out to PFF marks of 61, 60.1, and 59.7 respectively. The fourth, Charles Montgomery, caught two passes for 18 yards and only notched a 60.6 PFF grade.
Corey Gammage (57.7 PFF), Jayden Harrison (56.6 PFF), and Caleb McMillan (49.8 PFF) rounded out the receiving core with Gammage (two catches, 14 yards) being the only one of the trio to record at least one catch.
TIGHT ENDS:
The tight end room again underwhelmed and had the lowest grade of any offensive position group on the field, as Devin Miller and Stacey Marshall, Jr. posted PFF marks of 54.1 and 42.8, respectively. Both players had pass blocking PFF grades of 71.9 and 69.2, respectively but performed below average from a PFF grade standpoint in run blocking, with Marshall, Jr. posting a 52.4 and Miller a 50.1.
Miller caught a pass for seven yards as the only touch of the day for the tight end group.
OFFENSIVE LINEMEN:
Up front, the offensive line struggled as Dalton Tucker (61.2 PFF) and Kendrick Sartor (60.9 PFF) were the only players to grade above a 60 PFF on the entire offensive line.
Ethan Driskell (59.2 PFF), Logan Osburn (57.9 PFF) and Trent Holler (56.0 PFF) rounded out the performance of the offensive line. All five players played all 83 snaps in the contest.
