Each week, we will explore the PFF rankings for individual players, as well as, look at top performers across Conference USA. As with the offensive report yesterday, the defensive grades for the Herd against FIU are a bit skewed due to overall snap counts and the fact that 32 defensive players saw action during the win. Joshua Bowers received Marshall’s top defensive grade from PFF with a 90.1. Now for a look at how the rest of the defense fared against FIU.
Defensive Line:
Koby Cumberlander played 17 snaps led Marshall’s defensive line with a grade of 80.3 (64.3 run defense, 75.2 tackling, 70.0 pass rush, 66.5 coverage). Emmanuel Balogun was next in line with a grade of 73.5 (69.0 run defense, 72.2 tackling, 68.3 pass rush) on 18 snaps. Owen Porter received the third highest grade at 67.6 (57.6 run defense, 26.9 tackling, 75.2 pass rush, 61.7 coverage) on 28 snaps and was followed by Sam Burton with a 67.3 (55.7 run defense, 70.2 tackling, 66.7 pass rush, 61.9 coverage) on 13 snaps. Other defensive line grade of note: TyQaze Leggs – 66.3 on 22 snaps, Esaias Carpenter – 65.4 on 24 snaps, Shane Simmons – 62.7 on 11 snaps, Jamare Edwards – 53.4 on 30 snaps, TJ Johnson – 48.6 on 28 snaps.
Linebackers:
Eli Neal led the Herd’s linebackers with a grade of 77.5 (80.8 run defense, 81.6 tackling, 64.3 pass rush, 64.4 coverage) playing 38 snaps. J’Coryan Anderson was next in line, grading at 67.1 (68.6 run defense, 79.9 tackling, 54.1 pass rush, 65.8 coverage) on 20 snaps. Daniel Foster rounds out the top three graded linebackers coming in at 63.0 (50.5 run defense, 26.5 tackling, 57.0 pass rush, 72.0 coverage) on 16 snaps. Abraham Beauplan received a grade of 57.6 on 24 snaps, while Charlie Gray received a 53.2 on 23 snaps and PFF graded Brian Cavacante at 52.7 on 13 snaps.
Secondary:
The Herd’s secondary was led by Joshua Bowers with a grade of 90.1 (62.7 run defense, 77.8 tackling, 90.2 coverage) on 20 snaps. Bowers was followed by Micah Abraham who graded 79.5 (66.2 run defense, 78.8 tackling, 79.7 coverage) on 47 snaps. Nazeeh Johnson and Naquan Renalds round of the top four members of Marshall’s secondary as Johnson received a grade of 70.4 (69.6 run defense, 83.3 tackling, 68.8 coverage) on 51 snaps, while Renalds graded a 69.0 (70.6 run defense, 81.5 tackling, 63.4 coverage) on 16 snaps. Other secondary grades of note: Brandon Drayton – 68.3 on 44 snaps, Steven Gilmore – 65.1 on 47 snaps, LeAnthony Williams – 64.6 on 20 snaps, Cory McCoy – 59.1 on 47 snaps.
