Not that I'm looking past Akron and Louisville, but for planning purposes:
I've not been to downtown PIttsburgh in years, never for a sporting event.
1. Where is everyone staying? I realize closer downtown will be more $$$$, but when you factor in parking, etc is it really? Or is it better to stay out of downtown and drive in?
2. Are there designated spots where we (visiting team) are allowed to tailgate together?

I'm staying at the Westin, free train ride to and from Heinz area, also not a long walk (1 mile) across the Clemente bridge past PNC park.

I don't know the answer to question two, but to answer question one - it's typically best to stay out of downtown, drive in and park. I have found (attended numerous baseball games) parking in garages downtown are not expensive at all. If you're willing to walk you can park pretty cheap ($5-$10) downtown. I have found staying in Robinson to be a quick shot into downtown. Green Tree is also a good option.

I have a airbnb near the bar district and going to uber to the stadium... debating on drinking around in a bar before the game or getting a spot and putting up a tailgate.

Agree on cheap parking downtown as well as Green Tree! There's a Holiday Inn Green Tree that has decent enough lodging, an indoor pool, a "Manager's Reception" that offers 3 free beers to each attending adult, and also offers a free shuttle to various places downtown. My wife and I used the shuttle to go to the Casino, which is right by Heinz Field. I suggest calling and seeing if they still do this; it has been 5 years. Very close to "don-ton" as the Yinzers say, as well as Mount Washington which is cool and overlooks downtown across the Mon River with a magnificent view. That's also where the "incline rides" are if you want to experience that.

If you want to experience some unique local yinzer food, hit the original Primanti Brothers restaurant in the Strip District (a cool area anyway). It is on Smallman, and not terribly far from don-ton. I suggest the "Pittsburgher" sandwich with a side of chili cheese fries. Just don't go there after a Bengals @ Stillers game wearing Bengals gear; I did this and I honestly feared for my safety, I had the whole place full of drunken yinzers yelling at me, telling me to get the **** out of Pittsburgh.

Greetings from a Morgantown resident and Louisville native/fan. I'll see you folks at the Joan next week!

Heinz is easy to get in & out of. As for bars, there is a Tilted Kilt (never been, a "better" version of Hooters), Jerome Bettis' Grill, and Burgatory are places I have been and recommend. I tailgated for Louisville @ Pitt a few times and had a great time. The Pitt fans are friendly.

The men's restroom at Bettis Grill is, um, unique. The urinals are behind a one-way mirror, right behind the greeter's station. So you're holding your stuff, peeing, looking at the backs of waitresses that are 3 feet in front of you. Odd. Very close, food is standard sports bar food, it's fine but not outstanding.

If you like burgers, Burgatory is AWESOME. I had a bison burger and a few IPA's, tons of TVs (all tuned to sports), it's great. This is what I would recommend the most based on my personal experiences.

Pittsburgh is a phenomenal place to visit. I lived there for 7 years and loved it. Agree on parking downtown. Good tailgating spots by the community college in the gravel lots.

I guess game time hasn't been announced yet, but if it's late a visit to the Strip District is well worth your time. It's just across a bridge or two from Heinz and there are parking lots nearby. No, it's not about strippers or strip bars. Look it up. The Strip offers some really unique shops and lots of street food, well worth your time. Maybe one of my favorite things about Pittsburgh.Take a cooler so you can bring some of that great food home with you.

Decent option - There's a new hotel in Mt Lebanon on Washington road. Right in the business district. The name escapes me but it should be easy to find as it's the only one. Decent food and drink around you all within easy walking distance. Great and very safe area. Easy Trolley/subway ride to the stadium with a stop that's real close.

As far as tailgating at the actual stadium - the lots are first come first served. They generally won't let you hold spots so if you have multiple vehicles you'll all need to arrive together. And I'm not sure but they all may require a pass. Not sure if there are spaces available to public but scalpers always have parking passes.

Thanks for the info Morgantown Card! We are excited to play U of L and hope you all take it easy on us! LOL!

Your game day atmosphere at Marshall will likely be a a nice "welcome and thanks for coming to Huntington and can we get you a beer" !

Let's hope for a great game and players to remain safe and healthy.

I honestly don't expect to win , but I do hope we will give you guys a good scare.

Appreciate the info on Pitt

Depending on what other events are going on in town, it is possible to get very good hotel accommodations fairly inexpensively. Using Hotwire, I've gotten rooms at the William Penn, the Renaissance and the Wyndham Grand for $99-$109 on game day weekends. Park in a downtown garage for $5-$10 and walk to the game. Doesn't always work . . . but it has for me many times. i'm not a tailgater so staying in downtown and walking to a few venues in town or on the north shore works fine for me.
Don't forget that if you do not choose to walk across one of the bridges from town to the north shore, the "T" is a free subway ride from any of four downtown stations to the two north shore stations.

I believe with the history of the Bengals/Steelers that the above should fall under common sense.

Other than that Pittsburgh is usually friendly to fans of any team (State Penn & WVU excluded)

So Panther, if the game is noon, and I grab an early flight in from ATL ,and I uber to the game, and then want to stay some place in Pittsuburgh where I can watch other games at a decent bar area that safe where I could walk from a hotel, what might you recommend ? As far as hotel and bar area choice ?

Thank you in advance for any good suggestions.
