I am impressed with Chase, and for that matter Birdsong, but we really need a true quarterbacks coach. Since Tony Petersen left that's a position coach we could refill. Since we tout ourselelves as QBU, wouldn't it be great during the offseason if Holliday went out and got a true QBs coach. Chase and Birdsong both have the cannon but both of their mechanics could use some fine tuning.

My 4 top candidates?

1. Chad P.
2. Byron L.
3. Steve Spurrier
4. Michael Peyton

Thoughts?

Steve Spurrier?
Last season or so Spurrier had a lot of (negative) QB issues as USC. He at times was revolving people at the QB position well into the season, and his last couple of seasons were characterized with inconsistent QB play.

Byron? What has he done to indicate he could teach the position? Let's face it, his negative in the pros was his wind up. I love the guy, but don't know anything that would make this a fit.

Peyton Manning is going to be looking for a gig after this year and I heard from a "source" (definitely not a ridiculous message board post) that he really wants to be a college quarterback coach...

I agree with the statement we need some coaching upgrades in the assist area. Agree if we can develop chase he could be the one that gets us the next dance/conference . Hope hammick can manage some funds for some upgrades . Always the key to the next group

Agree with needing a QB coach but don't want spurrier and agree with plains on leftwich not having the best mechanics himself. Chad would be great especially if he could somewhat end up being the HC in waiting. I just thought he had always said he only wanted to coach hs but I could be wrong. Michael Peyton is an interesting idea as well. I hate that he didn't get to play in the NFL especially because I am a cowboys fan and he was with them when his condition was caught. I don't know much about what he has done in the past 20 or so years but it could be an interesting choice. I'm sure Doc would bring in some quality options if he wanted to add a QB coach. Didn't we hire a new coach at a different position when Peterson left?

i'm sure chad is dying to work 80+ hours a week, only have 2-3 weeks off per year, for $90,000/year.

and yeah, michael payton, who was far as i know hasn't even coached pee wee in the past 20+ years since leaving here, he'd be an excellent addition to our coaching staff. i mean, the game hasn't changed at all, and he's had such a great run coaching quarterbacks compared to our current qb coach.

So our quarterbacks have preformed at a high level under Legg and we have people saying we need a QB coach??? Amazing

Why is everything a battle with you?

The OP asked a legit question regarding a QB Coach. Most programs have them as they help correct mechanics to not only maximize a players output for college, but this also helps them with being more attractive for NFL scouts, potentially helping them get to the next level.

The part where the OP mentioned candidates for the position may just be trolling, I don't know, but the basis of the post is fine.

We need to give Litton more talent around him. That will only help him even more. We need more WR depth. I worry about next year at WR. Allen and Reeves are gone and McManus has been a huge disappointment. Maybe he will step up next year. But we need to bring in some talent in the offseason. Our RB are loaded in my opinion for the foreseeable future with the kid from UL coming and the Ashland kid. I also think we need to go get some OL. Maybe a JUCO lineman and WR

So to recap...

1. Chad Pennington - Aint happenin... We need him to continue being our lead fundraiser more than a QB coach. And as mentioned above I cant imagine he would be thrilled to turn in 60+ hour weeks all year (coaching and recruiting) seeing as he is in good shape financially and he has a family.

2. Byron Leftwhich - Aint happenin... Love the guy, great player, but making him a QB coach would be like making Shaq a free throw shooting instructor.

3. Steve Spurrier - Aint happenin... Cant afford him, no way his pride at his age would allow him to come be a QB coach in CUSA.

4. Michael Payton - Aint happenin... No indication that he wants anything to do with coaching, also a completely different skill set than our current QB.

So basically this thread was a mute point from the beginning.

We have a ton of talent at WR out returning plus we have freshman that are redshirting and sitting out as Props. We have another WR currently at Milford Prep that is enrolling in January

Just contributing to the thread guys lol wasnt the one that brought it up just giving an opinion on the guys mentioned lol sheesh i think more people are scrolling threads looking to attack more than they are to contribute to the topic of the thread. I know in a way you are too 44 i just replied to you bc you had commented on mine... anyways i think we agree more than you realized bc even though i would like it i also said i thought chad only wanted to coach hs teams. I also said i had no idea what peyton has done since but he was a good qb when he was here and it would be interesting. When i said interesting i guess it was more interesting to see what he has done and what he would have to offer. Again though just trying to stay on topic bc i do realize there are other needs but every single thread doesnt have to go back to the same exact arguements as all other threads.

my only point is we have a qb coach, but people are knocking on him because he's never directly been a qb coach prior to this appointment. so, the ideas of throwing chad, byron, payton, etc in there shouldn't pacify those people considering not only have they never been a qb coach, but they've never been a college coach period.

As far as needing a qb coach yea legg has filled in and we have had some good numbers but remember cato started under peterson. Litton has done great but we have nothing to go on yet other than watching and seeing how he continues to progress. Legg didn't have him starting to begin with though and other qbs havent seemed to progress much at all so i really just don't know exactly how much is litton and how much is legg. Again though just trying to stay on topic bc i do realize there are other needs but every single thread doesnt have to go back to the same exact arguements as all other threads.

I can agree with that... he hasnt done anything to set the qb play back so i cant argue that we need a new one until he does. But i guess my original thought was he was just filling in until we found one but i was obviously wrong and it hasnt hurt us so far. Don't fix what isn't broke hahaha

Nothing wrong with having a QB coach and an O coordinator. I also believe I remember hearing Litton having participated and worked with Kresser before coming here.

in the hypothetical world after this season doc wants to add, say kresser, who on this staff do you let go?

I'm not a big fan of Legg but no one "needs" to be let go. Peterson was here several seasons along with Legg.

we have a full staff, if we wanted to hire a qb coach, other than legg, we'd have to let someone on the staff go.

I don't want to see anyone go, but we could probably get away with having one Defensive Line Coach and not having separate Defensive End and Defensive Tackle coaches.

definitely a possibility i guess, though i know of no team that's ever had just 3 defensive coaches and 5 offensive coaches (i'm sure someone has, it's just extremely rare).

Chad could work miracles with Chase...Earth Calling Chad...

i'm not sure chase needs miracles.

again, why would a multimillionare with a lot of solid investments and fiscally stable for the rest of his life want to commit to work 60-80+ hours per week minimum, traveling significantly a large portion of the year, all for less than $100,000/year?
