Does John think "ODU" stands for Ohio Dominican University? He can't think it stands for Old Dominion after claiming that "they [ODU] played everyone tough." Old Dominion lost at home by 17 points a few days ago to a Western Kentucky team that lost to Central Arkansas.
Losing at home to anyone by 17 isn't playing them tough, and it definitely isn't playing them tough when it's to a bad opponent.
ODU's one win was against Norfolk State in which they needed a TD with 3 minutes left in the game to take the lead. But maybe Norfolk State is solid, right? No. Norfolk State is 0-5 against D1 teams this year. A few days ago, they lost to North Carolina A&T 58-19.
I understand the need to show your opponent some respect, especially in the media. But come on - your method isn't working. How about motivating your team and saying something along the lines of: "We had a very poor showing last week. We are motivated, angry, and wanting to get right back on the field immediately. ODU has played well defensively, and our offense can't wait to prove their ability against a respectable defense after a disappointing showing last week. We feel that we have the ability to be the best team in the conference but have failed to show it so far. We plan on changing that and are coming in with the mindset expecting to dominate from start to finish, goal line to goal line, and finish drives when we get in the red zone."
This whole talking up your opponent like they are the '72 Dolphins seems to be taken literally by your players. Let them know that this team is far inferior in talent and that you expect to dominate them.
