Louisville has made it back to the Top 5

Best thing about the new rankings and the weekend..."The" Ohio State losing to Penn St. and dropping 4 and 6 spots depending on the poll.

And WVU who so many laughed at regarding the Big 12 , in the top 10 , undefeated at 6-0 and in a fight for the top of the Big 12 as well.

How does OSU lose a game against an unranked team yet barely drop in polls. How many schools would get to stay in the top 10 by losing to an unranked team. And how does WVU get a top 10 slot when they haven't beat a ranked team?

The polls are fun, but meaningless. The goal in college football is to have the least losses. Have the least losses, preferabably zero, and be in the so-called power 5 and you make these playoffs. Conference quality or schedule strength are only a tie breaker. Have the least losses, preferabably zero, and be in the "group of 5" and you get the "access bowl". Conference quality or schedule strength are only a tie breaker.

Right now, all four of the better of the so-called power 5 have undefeated teams. Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, Nebraska, and Washington. So that would be your playoffs right there, even if Baylor or WVU also go undefeated. As to the "access bowl", currently undefeated are Boise State, and Western Michigan.

But guess what?

It is October. Season ends in December. Check back then.

As to rankings, MU made the "too shocked to be miserable" in USA Today's humor "Misery Index". I believe we will make the actual ranking in ESPN's semi-humor/semi-serious Bottom 10 when it comes out on Wednesday. USA Today's weekly "re-rank" which is a serious effort at ranking every team has us 116th of 128, ahead of only Georgia State, UTEP, Louisiana Monroe, UMass, Texas State, Buffalo, Miami (not the real one, the one in Ohio), Fresno, FAU, Kent State, BUGS, and Rice, the worst team in the country.

Early line for Saturday is USM -14 1/2. Lay the points.

Any other school but the elite of the elite could lose to an unranked team and not drop too far in the polls. It's usually an SEC team but talking heads have been promoting the hell out of the Big 10 this year as a conference worthy of getting two playoff spots.

WVU is probably overrated at this point of the season. Sagarin has them rated No.15 which seems about right. Although they have not played a ranked team, their strength of schedule is 28.

Fever is right. They have got some great receivers. Players that make plays and they have the best defense they have had in a long time. I know im on herd nation but this site does stick to the truth in the end. Wv is underrated

Sisterville, they also have a TOUGH QB, Howard, who is not afraid to tuck the ball and run it. He's built pretty solidly and often delivers tougher hit than he receives from a tackler. Has made their offense that much more effective. Last week alone he practically beat Texas Tech by himself with his runs.

MU on the other hand has a ONE DIMENSIONAL QB, and with one One RB in the backfield there sure isn't much "OPTION" in our "read option" attack. As a consequence, it isn't that difficult for a D coordinator to plan a defense for our "intricate" offensive attack/scheme! Heck, the D coordinator at Poca Junior High, Legg's home town", probably could defend against it fairly well!!!

Washington's combined opponent's record is 18-33. Their first true test is on Saturday @ Utah. Personally I think the Huskies win in a blowout, but you never know.

Thank you for your post oldeherd. You were correct in every thing you said. Our qb is weak except for his jaws.Herd coaches must love him because they have it where he has no competition. Any qb coming to marshall will sit the bench for the next two years. Boy marshall not a good place to go if you are a qb.Litton must be doc's boy.

28th hardest schedule in america. Hate on wv all you want but it makes marshall fans look like they are out of touch with reality. Last week it was all about how bad tcu was going to beat WV. When wv beat them like akron beat us you turn around and say tcu is not any good. WV plays 5 teams that would hang 70 on marshall.
