SC game weather

No one has the storm impacting Columbia anymore.

Everybody in the Charlotte news is agreed it will hit between Wilmington, NC and Morehead City, NC. Most of the channels are agreed the storm will head north through Raleigh and to Roanoke, VA and lead to massive flooding in WV. One station is playing scaremonger and only showing the one outlier forecast which has the storm making a massive left turn when it hits the coast and comes right for Charlotte. #ratings

If you don't mind me asking how far south of Asheville? I grew up in WNC, in a little town called Sylva. My wife is from Charlotte.

Your kidding... I live in between Sylva and Franklin (on the Macon County side of Cowee Mountain). Thats a cool coincidence.

On a side note, South Carolina issued a statement last night that makes it sound like the game isnt going to happen Saturday. Basically that they have already informed the NCAA, SEC and all of their fall sports opponents for the rest of the week (including MU) that changes to the schedule are likely and "the top priority is for the safety of everyone involved."

Okay, both of you guys need to give me to top notch information. I'm retiring in a few years, and SW North Carolina and Northern Georgia is where I've been looking. I've looked at pretty much every mountain community (from 800 miles away here), and have no idea which ones are best, which ones to avoid. Preferably, I was thinking the Blue Ridge, Ga area, but have also looked into communities north of there in SW NC, primarily Murphy, Maggie Valley, and Sylva.

My family and I own a condo in Myrtle. My parents are there now and in an attempt to evacuate, there any no hotel rooms available in the Columbia area. I checked about 20 hotels for them. They decided to just drive back to WV. I am actually on hold now for a hour to reschedule my flight to MYR on Thursday. Will be interesting to see how this game plays out. Will they cancel due to the torrential rains expected and/or will they cancel due to the overwhelming security need that will be needed in the Grand Strand and Pee Dee regions due to the storm surges and rains? UF and FSU had to make this call 2 years ago and got blasted for canceling due to not wanting to take resources (mainly state troopers) away from the hurricane needs vs a football game. I know the Herd is scheduled to leave town for Columbia on Friday afternoon. Gotta think the phone lines between the two schools is open and active.

I've lived here five years... Lots to like about the area for sure. Where you want to live depends on what you are looking for... I personally don't care for the Murphy, NC area. The closest golf course is a half hour away, and there is pretty much nothing to do unless you want to hang out at the casino... Maggie Valley is pretty and its right off I-40 (half an hour to Asheville) but you are going to pay premium for real estate there... Sylva and Franklin are pretty similar. Nice quiet small towns (primary crime is drugs, as it is in every small town in America). Sylva has WCU, which offers a lot of public events both sporting and cultural which is nice and its 20 mins closer to Asheville (40 mins away). Franklin has more outdoorsy stuff, the Appalachian Trail, Bartram Trail, tons of camping and mountain biking areas and is 20 mins closer to Atlanta (2 hours away).

Thanks for the info. Murphy seems to be cheaper, but I'm not wanting someplace where you have to drive a ways to find anything with a pulse. Also, having a local brewery is a must, which is why I'm fond of Blue Ridge currently. Of course, those are popping up so quickly, every town will likely have one before I eventually move.

If you are looking for breweries you do not want to live in GA... They have an archaic law that only allows them to sell up to 32 ounces of beer to any one person at the brewery. Some also require you to "take a tour" or some nonsense before you can buy their beer direct. Its stupid.

Here are a list of breweries in Western NC... With no such restrictions...

Murphy –
Valley River Brewing
Andrews –
Andrews Brewing Co.
Hoppy Trout (really good)
Franklin –
Lazy Hiker Brewing (really good)
Currahee Brewing
Sylva –
Innovation Brewing (best brewery west of Asheville)
Balsam Falls Brewing
Bryson City –
Nantahala Brewing
Mountain Layers Brewing
7 Clans Brewing
Hayesville –
Hayesville Brewing Co.
Waynesville –
Frog Level Brewing (really good)
Boojum Brewing

CH 13 would not be able to properly cover a single car wreck outside its office. No other source has anything on the Spamies, nor on UNC's game with the never national champions UCF, which is in the same metro area. I would wait for something official.

As to the Herd, SC gov has ordered everybody off the coast and reverse flowed the main roads. Since all the roads more or less lead to Columbia, the only issues for our game are accommodations and cops having more important stuff to do.

CCU has flipped its Saturday home game against Campbell to an away game on Wednesday and will ride the storm out there for the rest of the week.

12 inches of rain expected in WV as a result of this storm, I serious doubt it’s going to be moved to Huntington even if USC agreed to do so. It’ll be a nice extra week to prepare for NCSU

Here is the noon track update from the NWS... Basically if any of the lower half of those lines come to fruition Columbia is going to be underwater on Saturday. Right now the storm is 350 miles in diameter and is a Category 4. For reference, Columbia is located just barely left of where the "M" in Myrtle Beach is on the above map.

The governor has lifted some of the evacuation orders for the southern coastal counties of the state. He is reopening some schools and state offices tomorrow as well.

Keep in mind though that even though some evacuation orders have been lifted, almost every (if not all) hotels in Columbia are full, many major roads are 4 lane going away from the coast and the traffic is a nightmare. If the storm stays as slow as it is moving now, the amount of rain that will fall could be in the feet not inches in some areas. Many of the people needed to make the game happen may have other responsibilities (be it work or family). I would put the chance at the game being played at 30-40% but thats just my thoughts.

It appears as if the storm's testicles have yet to drop

I echo a lot of what Rhino says, Murphy is a little too isolated for me. In a way it has an outpost feel to it. Now they did recently build a Casino there, so I'm sure the economy is experiencing a nice boost, but with that kind of industry comes an increase in crime and transient neighbors. I grew up in Sylva, my dad was a professor at WCU from the early 70's to 2001, and I went to Western in the early 80's. He still lives in the Sylva/Cullowhee area, and I drive up from Atlanta (a quick 2.5 hour drive) to visit him a few times a year. I will say the Sylva area has done a nice job of maintaining a Mayberry feel about it, all while Western has exploded in enrollment with close to 12,000 students. I too am looking at moving back to the mountains in a few years, and personally I probably won't consider anything further southwest then Franklin, Sylva or possibly Bryson City. If you want to send me a PM with your contact info, I'll be glad to give you a bunch of info on WNC and the North Georgia Mountains.

The SC gov pulled the evac order for the southern 3 coastal counties, which is the only part of the state that would naturally funnel into Georgia. The evac for the Charleston and Myrtle Beach areas remains in place, and all of that traffic is heading for Columbia or Charlotte.

The center of the storm's projected path looks to be well north of Columbia, somewhere near Pinehurst by kick off time.

The big issue seems to be resources more that any actual danger.

Wake just moved its Thursday game with BC from 7:30 to 530.

My Dad is the pseudo Mayor of Innovations, every time I visit we go there, and inevitably someone picks up our first round... LOL

You’re right no way it happens. That said you need a WV geography lesson.

Why don’t you move to St Louis. I hear East St Louis, Illinois is very nice.

Based upon the slow moving nature of this storm-the Weather Channel is saying that parts of WV could receive anywhere from 6-12 inches of rain.

I know I read the same, the Ohio River (you know GreenDuke the river that runs right through Huntington) is already nearing flood stage and the National Guard is on standby in response if needed for southern WV and the Tri-State area (that would be WV, OHIO, KY area GreenDuke.)
