Marine - this was perhaps the 1st case of social media changing the mind of a major college athletics dept. on such an important hire! Schiano was crucified for not outing Sandusky while on staff @ Joe Pa......Kirk Herbstreit made the mistake of promoting Sciano on Twitter. It was like setting off a nuke on the internet !!! Devastating turn of events....

A former assistant at Rutgers said Schiano would frequently have some shady characters visit him in his office. He described them as "Godfather" type guys, complete with identical black SUVs, security, etc.

Hiring him would've been a big mistake for UT for sure. UT needs to find a winner because their fanbase is getting impatient with the losing. This hire is going to be huge.
Tennessee should be one of the elite programs. No excuses. Money, fans, facilities. Years of bad coaching hires.
Tennessee and a few other programs make me wonder why they aren't as good as they should be. I'd even out a place like Pitt on that list for basically the same reasons...money, fertile recruiting, decent conference, etc.

I'm sensitive to this issue for a few reasons. Mostly because about 30 years ago I was working with a coach who was accused of having an ongoing, consensual relationship with a student. I would have backed this guy to the moon, but he later admitted to it and resigned. I thought I knew the guy. I'm just saying, just because Schiano was an assistant for 5 or 6 years alongside Sandusky doesn't mean he was aware, and certainly doesn't implicate him in a cover-up. I was clueless to things that were happening right under my nose.
Having said that, I also don't claim to know the dude, or his character, motives, or ethics. It's possible he is guilty of everything people are saying. But I don't like the "guilty by public opinion" bullshit.
And for the record, I hate the WAY this happened. Tennessee obviously vetted Schiano. They knew about his past, and decided to hire him anyway, either because they didn't think it was a big deal or they didn't believe all the accusations. Either way, they vetted and decided to hire him. And then they let a campus rally change their minds. What a horrible precedent to set. So what happens next? Start an online poll so the squeakiest wheels can pre-approve any subsequent hires?

I completely agree, coaching record aside, Tennessee has now tarnished an individuals name and reputation, using associative assumption as the reason. I am not a litigious person, but I can see a defamation of character suite possibly begin filed by Schiano.
I am not sure Pitt falls into this category. Western PA is not what it used to be. And with PSU joining the B!G, you bring Ohio State/Michigan into your recruiting battles along with Penn State. And Pitt fans don't donate very well, considering the size of their alumni base.
Schiano should sue for defamation of character and I think he should go after the ring leaders on Twitter as well. Send a message that crucifying someone publicly without actual proof of wrong doing won't be tolerated and will hit you in the wallet.

As far as I know, all that was mentioned of him was a 2nd hand account during a court deposition from someone who claimed he may have known.
Didn't Charlie Strong turn down UT when he was still at Louisville? That sorta let me know about UT and how undesireable its become.

Cutcliffe from Duke turned them down (they could have had him in like 2007) and now they're rumored to be making an offer for Gundy from Oklahoma State.
Interestingly enoigh, Schiano could still sue them because he and the AD both signed an agreement of terms (or something like that) which basically said "You're hired" but the Chancellor did not sign it.
He could sue them for that.
Also, apparently fans were chanting to fire some UT person, I think the AD, during WWE Raw.
UT is quickly becoming the last place you wanna go.
