SHR: Gregg Marshall out at Wichita State

Did anyone know him when he was here? Did he seem like someone capable of this stuff?

His actions aren't nearly as shocking as the revelation that he earned $3.5 million last year. That's more than Indiana, Virginia, Arizona, and Texas pay their guys.

Yes

He was pretty intense so I’m not surprised just disappointed. There has been chatter about his recruiting methods and handling of players for quite a while.

His actions are the reason that Donnie Jones left him after one year and moved on to Dayton. As I was told Donnie had a 2 year commitment to WSU but that Marshall was too hard to work for. I got that from a VERY dependable source

GM “resigned” this morning. He walks away with a 7.75 million parting gift.

Maybe one factor there is the fact that Wichita doesn't have a football program, or at least one at the FCS/FBS levels. Supposedly some area businesses and well heeled businessmen put BIG BUCKS into the Shocker basketball program

Did they discontinue football after part of their team died in a plane crash a year or two before the MU crash? Marshall's success as a coach is impressive. At Winthrop, he had his team in NCAA tournament almost every year. And Wichita St. has had a lot of success since he got there. I will be interested in getting more info on what he did that was egregious enough to get him fired.

WSU played for several years after their air disaster, I think at least until 1980 or later.

The Wichita State plane crash was October 2, 1970. WSU had contracted with some jack-leg outfit to lease a plane for away games. The outfit really didn't own the plane it promised and showed up with two ancient prop planes which it obtained at the last minute, both of which had been sitting in storage for at least 3 years. The pilots of one plane, at least one of which was not qualified to fly it, decided to take a "scenic route" to check out some potential ski sites they wanted to buy, not understanding that they needed to fly far higher to clear the Rockies. They hit a mountain. The other plane followed the approved flight path and landed safely.

Wichita State played football until 1986, when it was dropped due to lack of interest and Title IX issues. The stadium, Cessna Stadium, held 31,500. It has been left to rot and the state gave the school permission to demolish it earlier this year.

I know Sam will remember the joint telethon that was held to benefit both universities.

Can you say strangle an assistant coach or verbally abusing players? Those have been reported and documented.
