WV just given the green light to develop a testing site for the Hyperloop.

This is a big deal. It could cut travel time down from hours to tens of minutes. The number of jobs this can create will certainly be very positive.

Imagine the eventual effects of travel on a team like MU. Going from Huntington to Florida in no time at all...among other things.

It is a big deal for sure and a big get for Big Jim and his administration. Before the infrastructure is built and travel on there is affordable for a Marshall team, your grandkids might see it.

I can feel the ground swell of anticipation building as many wait with baited breath for the time to be drastically cut in making the commute from Lavalette out towards Beech Fork Lake!!

I was reading today that they anticipate having the system operational for passengers by 2030. Approx travel time from Pittsburgh to Chicago 41 minutes. NYC to DC 30 mins.
They expect the cost of a ticket to be less than air and about the same as train travel.

Really? Shows how desperate people are in the area. Do you really think Lord Branson is going to get
an unproven technology up and going? Do research on Space Port America. It's now virtually mothballed. This dude has more $$ then sense. I would not put any stock he will get much done of this magnitude.

There's a few different companies investigating this, including Tesla. There's a lot of money to be made disrupting the airline industry, which if anybody's been watching the last 30 years runs on a fairly unsustainable model that requires constant government subsidy.

Oh, and after reading the poll recently and knowing the ages of most people on here, this should land:

MichiganHerd, you made my day with your comment above. Very funny. Timothy Leary is smiling.

There is a new breed of entrepreneur in this and other countries of which people like Branson and Musk are the most well known. They use science fiction ideas and prey on the dupes of the green religion to get governments to fund vast projects that never actually work.

The effect on this project for WV and for MU are we can get some publicity and some federal money out of the deal, but don't pretend that you, or your grandkids, are going to be teleported to California in 5 minutes.

Its already been tested in Nevada at speeds over over 200 mph. They moved here for the terrain

Now the powers that be need to focus on getting the southern portion of the state, including Huntington away from the coal industry and focus on diversifying the economy. Should have been done 40 years ago. Pineville, Mullens, Welch, etc. are like third world towns these days.

There's that West Virginia forward thinking. Knew we could count on you.

It’s obvious that The FUTURE is not for you! Maybe find a good genealogy class at your local library.....

Gotta love the forward thinking of WV.
You're the perfect example of triangular depression, "Why can't WV be like a major economy/city?" to "oh, woe is me, WV has always been behind" to "well that forward thinking idea is bullsh*t."
Rinse and repeat.

Goddamn Sam, I figured you'd be happy.
WV has the future in its hands with this.
You know who doesn't?

I'm not from WV. Personally, it does not effect me one way or another. I'm simply pointing out; Branson has a tendency of starting projects, then realizing it maybe over his head, dropping out.

correct, terrain and climate. They want to see what happens in the cold and heat. Big deal. Im in Canaan right now and the real estate market is impacted already. A local real estate agent has listed 10 properties in a day. She also has written several sales contracts in the same time period

Sir Richard! Got to give him credit: When he & his family take the virgin flight into sub-orbital height aboard Spaceship 1 ( I think that is the name of it), he will either come down a hero or float down (ashes) as a martyr for private space ventures.....he's got a big, brass set!! I'm pulling for him...

Yeah SpaceX is all smoke and mirrors...🙄

Yeah, SpaceX is all smoke and mirrors...🙄

Tell that to TorC, New Mexico. You can draw some parallelism between WV and southern NM.

Remember, SpaceX is Musk; I am firmly convinced the only reason he has not blown anyone up in the past decade was he recruited NASA to lead the development. Virgin does not have NASA's Blessing; 2015 killed a pilot in Mohave.

The purpose of science is to discover what is true. Not to invent whatever one WISHES were true. Believing anything one dreams up can be invented is science fiction, not science.

Hey they are building a test track for some new technology in the middle of nowhere WV. Big Jim got USPAM to toss us a bone and we get our name on it too, which would have never happened with any other gov. Great. We get some pub, some fed money, a nice building and some lab coat type shots for the halftime commercial. Great.

But there are three possibilities after that:

- The 98% chance that this does not work. That is the failure rate for new science.
- The 1% chance that this works theoretically, but is economically unviable.
- The 1% chance that this actually works.

In which case this test track will NOT be a part of the system. The routes will be between major cities. Of which we have zero. Certainly first up would be DC-BAL-PHL-NY-BOS, and then outward from there. You are never going to the Huntington teleporter stop and catch a bullet train to Dallas. Rather you will do as your lord and master, Kent "King" Carper commands. Drive an hour to Charleston, pay triple price to get on a small airplane and then spend three hours dead time in CLT or ATL waiting to get on the plane going where you really wanted to go.

How is NASA leading SpaceX’s development?

Anyhow we are getting off of topic. I'm glad they picked WV for the Hyperloop. Might even help MU is some ways. You, West Virginians, have to be careful if Virgin starts asking for money to help them complete the Loop. Because if Branson drops it out of the blue for a giant tax write off. WV will be left with a giant tube to deconstruct and a few less Million in the till. He is known for it. Hopefully, your Governor is not awe struck is some of the posters.

That's well known. Why don't you do a search on it. Search for SpaceX NASA Partnership. In fact, the Falcon 9 is NASA's Technology.

I’ve searched and paid quite a bit of attention to SpaceX and NASA. And NASA has provided development Monday, and I’d imagine they’ve have lent their technical expertise. But there’s nothing that I’ve seen where NASA has “lead the development” of the Falcon rockets. NASA was an investor.

Now I’m by no means an expert, so if you can produce a link showing me that Falcon is actually NASAs technology, I’d for sure be interested in reading up on it.

I swear, living in West Virginia sometimes.......

This would require WV to actually think...you may be asking too much.

OK - space enthusiast here! Rivaling my love for the Herd is looking up. Sam - resisting mightily to avoid comparing your latest diatribe to the men’s basketball program! I actually think your 1% chance of the Hyperloop working is higher than your opinion of Marshall ever dancing again.
Regarding the technology: Of COURSE it’s not science fiction! That would be those Buck Rodgers comic books you read when you were a kid growing up during the Great Depression. The science, for sure is theoretical, and needs enough track to actually test the vehicle at capacity. But good Lord! You hill jacks will never be satisfied! You grew up getting welfare cheese from the guvmint, complaining that the hills never get nuthin’. Then when $$, development & jobs are dropped in your lap, you bitch that it won’t work. Sounds an awful lot like the bitchy old men that sit behind you in the Joan!! As for Spacex/NASA: Think about it like this: If Elon was just sinking $ into NASA projects using only their know-how, why are there now groundbreaking, cost saving reusable SRB’s (boosters) that can return to a soft landing? Or the dragon (capsule) cargo & dragon (human) crewed modules unique to Elon? You’d have a better argument with NASA contracting Boeing to design and build their own design crewed module while at the same time NASA is building the Orion spacecraft/launch system. Elon also uses different fuel combos + an ion powered second stage. He is planning on colonizing Mars! I want to go.

“While SpaceX exclusively spent its own money to develop its previous launcher, the Falcon 1, development of the Falcon 9 was accelerated by NASA funding parts[which?] of development costs and committing to purchase several commercial flights if specific capabilities were demonstrated.”

Again, NASA provided major funding for Falcon, and provided a guaranteed customer provided that certain capabilities were met. Both things that helped assure SpaceX’s survival.

But they did not lead the development, nor is Falcon NASAs technology. That’s simply not true.

I have problems with Musk, but he is not preying on dupes for worthless government funding.

For the sake of argument say all of that is true. Given that, what is the problem with a company dumping half a billion dollars into taking a stab at it in WV? With a $50 million dollar a year economic benefit?

What’s the issue here? I haven’t seen where West Virginia has spent any money on this? They’re building on an old mine site so the natural beauty of the land has already been altered, if that’s your angle. Tucker is one of the least populated counties in the state, so I don’t think the land will be needed for anything else anytime soon.

So what’s the problem? Why the cynicism for the sake of cynicism?
