Smock reviews the AAC and its capital improvements

To be honest with you, I am of the Opinion of this. There should be 8 conferences of 16 teams. Big 10, ACC, SEC, Pac 12, AAC, MWC, CUSA, and the MAC. The Champion of Each conference, The 4 runner ups of the Power conferences then the next Top 4 ranked teams should all make an 16 team playoff. Then you seed the Teams 1-16 based of final rankings

Why is it that Smock has to ALWAYS take a shot at us? The "still a pipe dream" comment was not instrumental to his story at all, merely another put down to MU.

It is the GAG-zete. Editorial policy is 100% anti-Marshall (in sports, but more importantly in what Marshall is and does for the region). Smock is just following orders.

That statement might be your opinion but it's not even remotely accurate. You lose credibility every time you post this kind of horeshit.

We match up facility wise, not an issue. Even basketball and baseball are not the issue. Marshall, in order to overcome its geography (and make no mistake, that is an issue) has to become an elite football program year in year out. We have to be able to bring strength to a conference from a football standpoint, winning CUSA this year would have really helped, going to a decent bowl and beating a team "perceived" as better would help, going to a couple of New Year's day bowls would likely seal the deal at some point. But that is what it will take. The great news, is that if we get to that point, then league affiliation (much like Boise) won't be as big an issue. Remember too, only CUSA and the Sun Belt are yet to send a team to a major Bowl game.

The biggest downside to us going to the AAC is that in order for that happen, one of the top tier teams in the AAC would have to leave and we would back fill that spot. It would be nice to get into a league when the good teams are still in that league.

Actually Smock is the only writer I read, I think he does a great job being fair accurate and really researching the stats before he writes anything.....taking note Landon?

BTW this just in, WKY QB Brandon Doughtey has been issued a 7th year by the NCAA based on a white trash rule stating your allowed 7 years to get a 4 year degree.

Just kidding!!! Lighten up people....or maybe better, Litton up people!

The east is going to be a beast with WKU, Marshall, and MTSU. FAU had a lot of freshman talent too

With WV being among the worst educated workforce in America, maybe it is time to invest more in Higher education. WV as a state is one of the lowest College Educated, lowest educated workforces in America. That is embarrassing and should be one of the main focuses of the new governor. Raising the HS and College educated workforce and keeping and raising the pay of Jobs for that workforce to keep them in the state should be the top priorities.

CUSA always do good in bowl games

Lol.

And you continuously criticize West Virginians and our intellect.

You dumb Northerners amuse me.

Honestly, I really don't understand the reason for that article. He just talked about the AAC for awhile and then said "oh, and Marshall is never going to get in this conference". I don't like reading pointless material, that just reminds me of Landon.

And if you want to poke the biggest (and most obvious) hole in the NCAA's bullshit logic.. The reason Marshall isn't getting in the AAC is purely from a financial standpoint. So much for it being an "amateur" sport.

You are a cousin from Richmond, right?

It's just a play on the statement ignorant out-of-staters make when you tell them you're from West Virginia - "oh yeah, I've got family that lives in Richmond!". I've never understood how people don't realize we have our own state.

But since you guys are so literal I'll change my username to something more factual, guywithtwelveinchpenis.

That is true cousin, living in the sunbelt I can attest most SEC fans think WVU is a school set in western Virginia, and they have no idea West Virginia is a state, much less a university.

I always tell people Marshall is a nice school of about 14,000 people situated in the Ohio Valley, right on the Ohio river. That way they won't associate us with beating up pregnant mothers.

Awwwwww that's not cool dude.

Not happening, AAC will be looking for mass media markets.

And you know this how?

See, this is an assumption based on logic, for sure, but not based in reality. Conferences today are looking for teams/programs that bring value to their leagues, and that value is measured by two things only and that is the ability to compete at a national level and bring national attention to the conference overall. That means, value from a bowl perspective and value to the television contract/negotiations. Marshall can fare well in both areas, forget about market size and think more nationally. BUT (and its a big one), MU needs to continue to be an elite football program because in some other areas it is marginal. Consistently being elite in FB trumps all else. Think Boise State and you will get it.

Remember too, we are not talking about inclusion in one of the Power 5 conferences, that simply isn't going to happen and the value formula is completely different (ask WVU).

Now, I'm not saying MU needs to move or is even desirous of moving leagues, but we should aspire to be the best that we can be and compete at the highest level possible. That gives the investors in the program (fans, boosters and tax payers) their greatest ROI.

So being in the AAC wouldn't help ticket sells? I must have missed all the sellouts against Conference USA teams. Lord knows playing more nationally televised games against ranked opponents would do nothing for attendance.

Nobody knows West Virginia is a state it seems.

I really have found the whole "people don't know WV is a seperate state" deal over-blown. What I do find is this:

- People, especially around DC, confuse Charleston with Charles Town.
- People around DC think that because they can be in WV in a half hour drive, I must live nearby, not 5 or 6 hours away. But people in DC are generally stupid anyway.
- The only sterotype you are allowed to make fun of in this country are Appalachians or Southerners generally. People who are otherwise nice make ignorant cracks about cousin marrying, shoes, moonshine, teeth, and so on. They would NEVER say the equilivant things about any other group.
- "How about them Mountaineers?" I generally respond "umm, I'm not from northern West Virginia nor am I from New Jersey, so I don't care about them.". Again, is that typical. Would somebody assume you are an Okie fan and not an Okie State fan (or whatever fan, or not a fan of anything) if you said you were from Oklahoma. I sure would not want to ask an Aggie about tu.

One thing that works against us in moving anywhere is the size of our manhood...........I mean budget lol We would again be behind the 8 ball like we were when we first arrived in CUSA. Our budget has to increase BUT where would it come from? LA Tech was shunned the first go around when we came in due to a few factors and budget was one of them. We are light years behind most AAC programs in that area, we are in the same boat as USM. Good programs and history, low budgets.

of the schools that reported houston had the lowest budget in 2014 in the aac. we were about $12m behind them. since that time they, they've paid a head coach about 4 times what we pay doc, increased their assistant salary pool to about 3x what we pay, just built/are building a $25m basketball practice facility, etc.

Only way our attendance would increase is if we got into THIS version of the AAC.

If Cincy is gone then I have no desire to move to the AAC. I would love to be in a conference with them though.

They're light years away from competing at the FBS level.

And so was ECU, Tulane, and Houston in AAC inaugural season. If MU were going to the AAC, they would have been invited in 2013. There was no reason not too.
Look at the teams realigning; UConn, Temple, Cincy, So. Fla., Houston, Memphis, SMU, UCF, ECU Tulane. All in Large media markets. Teams may not have been competitive in football.
But they had something MU don't large Media Markets. I don't believe the AAC is in a position to think outside that model, at least not yet.

If I was MU I would be thinking ACC football only. Now getting the likes of Tarheels, Duke, and FSU to come to Huntington every other year may be a stretch. But I feel it can be done and would be a better fit the AAC.
