Some fun stats from the 5 conference games so far (all stats from KenPom):

- Marshall is 3rd in the conference in Offensive Efficiency (111.3) and 6th in Defensive Efficiency (106.1). Their net rating of 5.3 ranks 4th in SBC.
- They are 10th in the conference in pace at 64.8 possessions per 100. This is a significantly slower pace to what they played in Non-Con.
- The Herd are doing an exceptional job at getting to the FT Line with a league leading FTA/FGA of 42.2 (D1 average is 33.3), but have been terrible at converting once they are there. 62.9% on average from the FT line, which is dead last in the conference. The Herd have also gotten some luck from opponents' FT woes. Conference opponents have been shooting just 64.5% from the line thus far (D1 average is 71.7).
- They have been remarkably hot from outside, boasting the leagues 2nd highest 3P% of 36.6. Even with the hot shooting from deep, Corny's team is still 13th in attempts. Only 33.8% of their FG attempts are from beyond the arc.
- They have been super solid with an Effective FG% of 52.4 (4th in SBC) and the 3rd highest Offensive Rebound % in the conference.
- Marshall leads the SBC in Block Rate (16.2), but are dead last in 2P% allowed. With the ton of blocks from OAK and even Martin last game, it may seem like they are doing a great job protecting the rim, but in fact conference foes are shooting a whooping 55.9% from inside the arc. But from outside the arc, the Herd are holding teams to just 27.7% from 3, which ranks 3rd in conference. So they have been great from defending the 3-ball and not great defending the interior.

Through 5 conference games, Corny actually has this team playing some good basketball (and honestly really good offense). Has it been perfect? Definitely not and it hasn't been pretty for a lot it, but they are a top 5 team metrically in this conference so far. You can argue that it's because they have dodged the big dogs of the conference, but JMU won a game in the NCAA Tournament last year and Troy will be fighting for a Top 4 SBC seed in March. A lot of basketball to be played which means a lot of volatility, but it's an encouraging start to conference play.

*Offensive Efficiency is points scored per 100 possessions (Defensive Efficiency is points allowed)*
*Net Rating is O. EFF minus D. EFF*
*Block Rate is a statistic that estimates the percentage of a player's opponent's two-point field goal attempts that were blocked while the player was on the court*
