Special teams....what is up?

Agreed, not ready to throw coaching under the bus yet but the execution was definitely an issue. I bet they practice special teams as a priority all week, and really need to dig more into run blocking. Our backs are getting the short stick because of the Oline.

I feel like we played someone a few years ago (maybe WCU?) who had a similarly terrible punter and the blockers got hit by the ball a few times. Tough to adjust to a punter that punts knuckle balls at odd distances down the field and to try to return them. Need solid communication from the return man - I wasn't close enough to the field to hear whether or not this was happening.

I do not know what kind of film we had on the young man, but would have thought coach would have caught his poor punting if there was film on it.

I did note that there was an in-game adjustment, which pleased me wherein NO ONE went back to block and the return man simply fair caught the ball.

agreed their punter was pedestrian and caused a lot of those issues until blocking was adjusted. I would have never guessed their punter would avg 25-30 yards on a damn kick.

That shouldn't have surprised our staff.

The previous week, he had one punt that went 33 yards for a fair catch, another that landed 32 yards away, and his final punt was fair caught for 43 yards. He's also a new punter - his first game this year was his first time ever playing in a football game, as he is Australian. His first week of game film shows that he is a drop (end-over-end) punter, which doesn't come as a surprise, as that is the way balls are usually kicked in Australian Rules Football. Drop punts don't get much help even with any wind behind them due to the drag they create, but they are easier for accuracy.

He's a new product from the best punting school in the world in the world who he will continue to work with, so he will improve, but his shorter punting shouldn't have caught anyone off-guard if they knew specifics about punting.
