Marshall Spring Preview: Quarterback

With the Thundering Herd beginning spring practice on March 28th, HerdNation will be taking an in-depth look at each of Marshall’s position groups. While there is a lot to be excited about heading into the spring, there are still several giant question marks looming over the roster. Up next are the quarterbacks.

What We Know: Henry Colombi III was brought in to be the starter for the Thundering Herd in 2022.

With the departure of Grant Wells, Coach Huff and the Marshall staff were forced to look to the transfer portal to find someone with collegiate experience. The answer: Henry Colombi III. After spending the first four year of his collegiate career at Utah State and Texas Tech, the 6’3”, 215 pound senior will arrive in Huntington with the expectation to be the clear-cut leader in the quarterback room. Colombi has thrown for 2,816 yards, 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions at his two previous stops. Not that this can be a completely apples to apples comparison due to competition, games played and offensive schemes, but in seven games during the 2021 season, Henry Colombi had an overall PFF grade of 80.0, while Grant Wells graded at 74.9 in 13 games.

Biggest Question: Will Colombi be able to participate in spring ball?

There has been quite a bit of speculation as to whether Colombi will be cleared to join the Herd during the spring. If so, it will be an excellent opportunity to build chemistry with the offense while putting the playbook into action. If not, can his four years of college experience help bridge the gap with Colombi only being able to participate in summer workouts and fall camp? We should know the answer to this question sooner rather than later. Stayed tuned to HerdNation as this situation develops.

Spring Darkhorse: Cam Fancher

There has always been an “off the radar” feel around Fancher both as a high school prospect and throughout first year with the Herd. His athleticism and potential have been lauded, but he has remained quiet on all fronts thus far. With three highly touted quarterbacks signing with Marshall in the 2022 class the competition is real. Now, as a redshirt Freshman, will Fancher be able to cement himself as QB2? It is hard to imagine that Cole Pennington will push for playing time as he is not joining the team until the summer, but with Peter Zamora and Chase Harrison already on campus, it will be interesting to see who emerges at Colombi’s back-up heading into the fall. Can one of the talented freshmen overtake Fancher? These next few weeks will go long way in answering that question.
