From how I read it it is more political than religious, to whatever extent you can separate the two in that region. The Pakistani army is going after the Taliban, so the Taliban is doing what cowards do and going after their kids.

In the big picture you can't, but there is some difference to me between "We're killing these people because they're the wrong religion" and "we're killing these people for X other reason." Not that one is better than the other, but it helps to understand the dynamics of what is playing out. This is one of the most cowardly acts I've seen, though, and is absolutely disgusting.
