This is pure and utter BS!!!!

It means that if you're the governors incompetent brother, you can replace a competent government employee.

The real world and a little knowledge of history should make you want civil service rules and protections. It's to protect from returning to the spoils system. There is enough corruption already without adding another layer of it.

Nahhhh. The spoils system assumes I would want a job picking up road construction cones on the turnpike over a real world job or business opportunity. Eliminating multitudes of entrenched lower tier bureaucrats every election cycle just doesn't hold up in modern times.

I'm sure dangerousdan likes napping all day on the side of the road in his state vehicle. Even I accept that most people are a little more motivated than that. This is actually a first step back to a real "merit system" and evaluating govt waste and misappropriation of resources.

That's the only state job? For someone that has said "real world" twice in one thread you seemed to be removed from it.

Not that you would know, but is WV still as crooked as it was when I left? Because as crooked as I thought WV was, it has nothing on KY. KY is a strange state; you have three pockets of the state contribute all the economic gains, with a bunch of hayseed/hilljack politicians in Frankfort treating the state as their fiefdom.

I retired last July after 29 years and my old job has not been filled and probably won't. I am more concerned about supervisors. There are more than a few who have no business in their positions. Most are clueless to what they are supposed to do and they are only there because they know someone in a higher position.

You need to talk with Raoul. Apparently "protecting civil servants" prevents this kind of govt malfeasance.

You guys don't think people in corporate world don't have jobs simply because they know someone at a higher position???

Bahahahahahaha

Some history books would do you well. Is the current system perfect? No. But it sure beats the way things used to be, and the old way made today's corruption look like child's play. It's not about protecting civil servants, although yeah a worker bee shouldn't lose their job over election results.

Nor should they have a job for life just because they are in the public sector

why does it always have to be "like it is now" or "we go back to the old way"?

just like if Boeing doesn't unionize their workers will suddenly be shopping at the Company Store using company credit.

So you just said you got paid for 29 years doing a job that wasn't needed. Thanks for being honest for once.

Civil Service is a pseudo-relative to entitlements for the lazy.

Real workers don't need all the bureaucratic additional costs to keep the jobs. Just a hard day's work and good things come.

Another major cluster-**** is the tenure process for college professors. It reeks!

Every other job on earth is 'at will.' Why are
government workers different?

Because the history books reinforce just how untrustworthy bureaucrats are (Raoul).
Their incompetence apparently needs protected (DangerousDan).

And people wonder why govt is questioned when the suggestion is made by some for it to do more.

Unions did enough to hurt themselves. I understand the premise on which they were built, but if workers felt compelled or desired them in large mass they would be a bigger player in the market.

58% of Americans approve of labor unions. How much higher does the large mass have to be ?

I think union membership has fallen so dramatically because the industries in which unions were prevalent employee far fewer people.

But if I am reading this populism trend right, I think unions are poised to make a comeback. Lots of people just feel fvxked, period. Elections will not be the only place they fight back against certain trends, one of which is lower wages.
