It is often said that “the numbers don’t lie” and with that in mind, we wanted to take an in-depth look at how the transfers in Marshall’s 2022 class performed, both statistically and according to PFF, at their previous universities.


Quentin Williams (DE/Miami) – During limited playing time with the Miami Hurricanes in 2020, Williams was credited with three tackles. Two of those tackles came in a win over Florida State, while the other was in a loss to UNC. As such, PFF notes that Williams played 17 defensive snaps with an overall grade of 66.8 (67.4 run defense, 75.5 tackling, 57.8 pass rush). No official stats were assigned to Williams for the 2021 campaign, however PFF indicates that he played a total of nine snaps with a composite grade of 59.3 (55.6 run defense, 65.8 pass rush).


Trent Holler (OL/East Carolina) – Holler began his career at East Carolina during the 2019 season and only played three snaps grading at 60.0. In 2020, Holler split time between Guard and Center, totaling 298 snaps with a grade of 58.8 (56.9 run block, 65.2 pass block). Having played an abbreviated 2021 season and being credited with 44 snaps, Holler graded 63.5 (59.9 run block, 72.5 pass block).


Khalan Laborn (RB/Florida State) – Laborn first suited up for Florida State in 2018, playing only three snaps and recording one catch for 37 yards in a loss to Virginia Tech. For those three snaps, Laborn received a grade of 92.7. His playing time increased significantly during the 2019 season, as he tallied 63 carries for 297 yards and four touchdowns. Laborn also added 10 receptions for 66 yards. His best game came against Clemson where he had eight carries for 69 yards and one touchdown. For 2019, PFF graded Laborn at 72.7 on 79 snaps.


Bryan Robinson (WR/Florida State) – Robinson is credited with playing one snap for Florida State during the 2020 season and recorded no stats.


Isaiah Norman (DB/Austin Peay) – During a career that spanned five seasons at Austin Peay, Isaiah Norman totaled 137 career tackles, two interceptions, 13 pass deflections, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. His best statistical season was 2019, where he played in a total of 15 games and accounted for 64 tackles with one interception. Norman played 577 snaps during 2019 and received a PFF grade of 75.1 (58.2 run defense, 55.1 tackling, 69.6 pass rush, 79.8 coverage). During an abbreviated 2020 season, Norman’s PFF grade dipped to 50.6, however in 2021, he bounced back and graded at 75.7 (73.2 run defense, 63.2 tackling, 77.3 pass rush, 74.3 coverage) on 541 snaps.


Andre Sam (Safety/McNeese State) – Andre Sam got better with every season he played at McNeese State. Starting with the 2018 season, Sam appeared in three games, recorded six tackles and received a composite grade from PFF of 58.5 while playing 28 snaps. Fast forward to 2019 where Sam played in 12 games, making 51 tackles with one interception. All of that was accomplished while only playing 207 snaps. Sam received a grade of 57.5 from PFF for the 2019 season. In 2020, McNeese State played a COVID-19 shortened seven game season. Sam totaled 52 tackles and three interceptions on 522 snaps, which led to a grade of 74.1. Sam played in all 11 games for the Cowboys in 2021, making 70 tackles and taking away one interception. PFF graded Sam at 76.9 on 754 snaps for the 2021 season.


Isaiah Gibson (DT/Kentucky) – Statistically, Gibson had identical seasons for the Wildcats in 2020 and 2021 as he recorded five tackles during each campaign. For 2020, PFF credits Gibson with playing 162 snaps and graded him at 45.3 (40.5 run defense, 60.6 tackling, 62.3 pass rush). Gibson’s snap count was reduced to 65 in 2021 as he received a grade of 60.8 (63.5 run defense, 74.8 tackling, 55.1 pass rush).


Anthony Watts (DT/Purdue) – Watts’ career at Purdue began in 2017, as he played 34 snaps and record one tackle as a freshman. PFF graded Watts at 54.5 (54.6 run defense, 70.2 tackling, 56.9 pass rush) for that season. In 2018, Watts totaled 42 tackles with one sack and one interception. His snap count increased to 720 and he received a composite grade of 62.8 (67.7 run defense, 74.8 tackling, 55.3 pass rush). 2019 brought a reduced number of snaps for Watts as he played 583, while amassing 35 tackles and two sacks. For this performance, Watts received an overall grade from PFF of 67.8 (65.9 run defense, 72.9 tackling, 62.6 pass rush). Watts’ snap count dipped even further during the 2020 season as he only saw action on 207 plays and had six tackles. This led to a PFF grade of 60.4 (68.1 run defense, 47.4 tackling, 55.4 pass rush).


Henry Colombi III (QB/Texas Tech) – Colombi’s collegiate career began at Utah State in 2018, where he served as the back-up to Jordan Love. In limited action, Colombi was 33 of 40 passing for 239 yards. He also added 13 carries for 108 yards and one touchdown. As such, he received a grade of 77.2 from PFF and had an NFL passer rating of 91.6. 2019 brought more of the same for Colombi as he continued to serve as Love’s back-up. He was 20 of 29 passing for 221 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, while totaling 14 rushing attempts for 31 yards and one touchdown on the ground. For the 2019 season, Colombi received a PFF grade of 71.7 with an NFL passer rating of 99.9. After 2019, Colombi made his way to Lubbock, Texas, to begin playing for Texas Tech. He started six games for the Red Raiders during the 2020 season, going 109 of 166 passing for 1,065 yards with eight touchdowns and four interceptions. He also ran 51 times and gained 103 yards and one touchdown. Colombi had an NFL passer rating of 89.5 for during 2020 and received a PFF grade of 65.1. As with the 2020 season, Colombi also started six games for Texas Tech in 2021. He 95 of 148 passing for 1,291 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions. He added 66 yards rushing on 36 attempts and two touchdowns to his stats. For 2021, Colombi graded at 80.0 with an NFL passer rating of 87.8.
