Temporarily, because those 75 countries have called and want to negotiate. They now have 90 days to work out a deal or tariffs on them will go back up. Of course you pause while working on a deal.

Second, the understanding of the tariff situation by some on this board is lacking. Here’s the problem - you can’t just put tariffs on China if China is your target. Why? Here’s how it works - say we have a 50% tariff on China and Vietnam has a 2% tariff on China and we have a 2% tariff on Vietnam. What China does is sell their products into Vietnam and pay a 2% and then Vietnam ships to the US with a 2% tariff. China completely avoids its higher tariff imposed by the US.
Since China was given higher tariffs in Trump’s first term they have been using this strategy to get around it, primarily using Vietnam, Canada and Mexico as low cost entry points into the US. Raising tariffs on everyone stops the back channels immediately putting maximum pressure on China. We will now sit down and negotiate with each country and specifically exclude their ability to act as a pass thru for Chinese goods. When China has no back channels they are forced to negotiate straight up. It’s that simply.

I somewhat disagree with this. We did actually put tariffs in place, albeit for 19 seconds, but they now know trump was serious about them.

Trump gave the world a clear view of what the future would be if they did not capitulate. They got on the phone and said please don’t make that our future, we want to come negotiate. Not backing off the tariff at this point would be acting in bad faith. You don’t break their arm once they cry uncle.

I too would have preferred Trump kept the gas pedal down on tariffs. Drive the market lower. Watched some of you continue to weep and moan over higher prices and 401k "losses". Handwringing about "too far too fast" tariffs....
