UCF Paid Their Coaches NC Bonuses!

It's a good move just for the sports talk it will generate will be more exposure value for the school than the cost of the bonuses.

Notice how ESPN is not really covering the UCF story. Its goes against the grain of cutting the playoff down to 64 for teams(and 4 conferences). No one is really discussing this story but its a huge blow to the elite programs and ESPN that want to continue cutting down the number of teams competing for a NC.

Walking by the TV this morning on the way to jail (err work), Scott Van Pelt was talking about UCF, and yesterday there was an article going over the various claims of National Championships over the past century. Get this, just this year, Minnesota claimed a National Championship for the 1904 season! Over 100 years ago. The upshot of the article was that UCF has a much more legitimate claim than a lot of the schools that did it in the past.

UCF has no claim just because they went undefeated. They say that they beat Auburn who beat GA and Bama yet they dont mention their strength of schedule is #54 while the two teams playing on Monday night (for the REAL National Title) have SOS of #6 and #7. Nice gesture but similar to a participation trophy in the end.

What is your basis for this? A quick Google news search shows that ESPN amongst many other major outlets returns way more than a few articles on the story. A quick Twitter search shows many ESPN personalities amongst other network personalities discussing it. UCF was a topic on PTI on Tuesday, Paul Finebaum talked about them on his show Wednesday, it was topic on Around the Horn Tuesday in which 3 of the 4 analyst said UCF should have made the playoffs, it’s been discussed on SportsCenter, Scott Frost is going to be a part of ESPN’s pregame coverage/shows for the National Championship on Monday, etc. Trust me, I can’t stand ESPN but posting postulates like this is absurd.

This is what I love about college athletics: a commuter school in Florida funds a $60 million athletic department with less than 7% of their revenue coming from people buying tickets to their events, and 36% from compulsory student fees, handing out bonuses to their coaching staff just to keep the school's name on ESPN's front page for another 24 hours.

Nothing spends quite like other peoples' money.

How does Alabama have the 6th or 7th ranked SOS. They played a totally weak schedule this year.
How so?

They played Florida State who is traditional strong and was #3 at the time they played.

They played three more top 20 teams during the regular season and just completely manhandled the #1 team in the country during the first round of the playoff.

Fresno State and Colorado St were bowl teams. Alabama outscored them 82-33

Ole Miss was 6-6 and would have been a bowl team and Alabama beat them 66-3

Beat a 7-6 Texas AM team

Tenn and Arkansas were down but are traditionally good.

They are 4 and 1 against the sagarin top 30 rankings with a loss to a natuarl bitter rival, Auburn, on the road.

Alabama was definitely a Top 4 team all year.

For the record, I think UCF is a definite Top 10 team but that doesn't diminish how good Alabama is. They are a very, very solid football team.

Strength of schedule based off of name and conference instead of opponents. No g5 can change their strength of schedule that much being forced to play majority of their games in a conference that is viewed as inferior. P5 teams get a sos higher based off of reputation and name recognition and will schedule teams like mercer instead of mid majors. They schedule lower teams that have no shot of climbing the ladder where some mid majors could strengthen their schedule and break up their guarantee to keep them out of the playoff discussion. It is set up as a p5 championship without saying it.
