It's early August in West Virginia and that means one thing. Football season is upon us.

The late summer's heat and smell of cut grass mixes with the early morning mist and dew to ring in the start of two-a-days. The sound of pads cracking, whistles blowing and marching band rehearsal echo through the mountain hollows and valleys all across the state.

It is in this time that new players make a name for themselves and veterans attempt to fill the shoes of those that came before them. This is true in Huntington as the Marshall Thundering Herd has several shoes to fill in the pursuit of back-to-back Conference USA titles.

The HerdNation staff takes a look at who could be this season's breakout players and which newcomer could make a name for himself...

Good assessments. I want to see what Yurachek can do given another year of physical development. Foster would be #2 on that list for me. Looking for big things for both.

Defensively, I'm hoping Huskey continues his emergence and that he/Petty can give us a powerful 1-2 at Mike. I also hope we find a way to get Houston on the field.

Would love to see Birdsong under center and us go double tight with Yurachek and Byrd a few times. Single back and run some play action and boots out of it.

Or, how about this, Mike. Birdsong under center, full house backfield, with Rockhead, another back and one of those 300 lb. linemen who can run reasonably well as a lead blocker. Similar to the old "jumbo package" first used by Coach Pruett and also run on occasion by Doc. Also with 2 tight end sets, with 260 lb. plus Joe Woodrum as 2nd tight end!!
