Why are we bad at basketball????

Dan has a good system but needs players to run it. No coach will consistently recruit top talent to Marshall but he can recruit shooters and ball handlers with high basketball IQs. He will need three recruiting classes to have enough players to be competitive in CUSA.

Give him a break. Marshall basketball hasn't been relevant in 30 years. Huck's Herd qualified for the NCAA s but the end result was probation. I know some of you want to minimize the infractions but the NCAA didn't agree with your rationalization.

Dan will recruit players who will stay in school for four years. Experience often times beats young teams with four and five star players.

Well, Herdstruck, Jones may have "sucked", which led Hammy to get rid of him. But don't forget that Herrion used many of Jones' players, Pena, Shaq Johnson, Damier Pitts, to name a few, to have what success he did have the first couple of years. But just like he did at the College of Charleston, once he started replacing players recruiting by his predecessor (Kresse at CC) with some of his "head case" recruits, his program quickly deteriorated from success to s**t" here at MU, just as it did at CC. Hamrick knew this, but hired TH anyway. Again, a easy way or lazy way out. MH's whole career of basketball hires at 4 different schools, has not been that great!

It comes down to bad coaching hires plain and simple. There were much better candidates available and we chose guys who should have never been given the job. You pass on Gregg Marshall not once but twice? and instead get guys like Jirsa and Jones followed by Herrion and then Dan D'Antoni. Very questionable hiring for sure. Now I do hope D'Antoni is successful and he may prove to be in a couple of years but just being honest, nobody else in the country would have hired him as head coach.
gregg marshall was only possibly available to us once, not twice. at the time he was a good, but far from sure thing hire. he had gotten worse every year (if i recall correctly) at winthrop. it wasn't until after that opportunity to hire him when we hired jirsa did he really turn it on there and win like 25+ for the next several years, by the time we were done with jirsa we had no shot at marshall.

That is 100% wrong. In addition to the points Caroli...dzilla brought up, Gregg Marshall was available AFTER Jirsa. GM was interested in the head coach job when Jirsa was let go. Instead of interviewing GM, Boob Marcum brushed him off and instead GM took the Wichita State job. If you want to know what Marshall basketball could have been, look at Wichita State because that is what we would have looked like. We passed on GM not once but twice. The second time he took the Wichita job after we brushed him off.

Moderator/s please look at Herdstruck's comments in this thread PLEASE! Here we go again with a poster calling other posters and fans in his rant "fickle idiots," "cheap bastards," etc. Calling other fans "idiots" and "cheap" is really unacceptable unless he is, of course, one himself! Tell him to knock off the unnecessary comments. Thank you.

So are you going to keep trying to shift your argument and change your claims everytime you are proven wrong wrong. First you tried to say he wasnt successful at Wintrop when Jirsa was hired and that was the only time we could have hired him and you were proven wrong on both accounts. Now you are trying to use money figures which dont tell the full story.

First the Wichita deal was something like a 7 year contract so he would have been making under a million a year. A good chunk of change but certainly not out of Marshall University's reach. Also GM would have been interviewed before Wichita State came calling. We could have snatched him up before he ever went to Wichita. And last and most important, it is still not an excuse for Marshall U. to ignore GM and not even interview him when Marcum knew he was interested in being the head coach. You at least interview him. If it doesnt work out then it doesnt work out but at least interview him when you know he is interested. Marcum pulled the same crap with Mike D'Antoni. GM however was an even bigger screw up because we know how good of a college coach he is.

Why is it a ludicrous comment 88? What has the bball team done over the past 20 years for anyone to really care about compared to football? Whst money, recognition, have they brought to MU compared to football?
