Economists and tax experts are overwhelmingly skeptical that the bills in the House and Senate can generate meaningful job growth and economic expansion. Many view the legislation not as a product of genuine deliberation, but as a transfer of wealth to corporations and affluent individuals — both generous purveyors of campaign contributions. By 2027, people making $40,000 to $50,000 would pay a combined $5.3 billion more in taxes, while the group earning $1 million or more would get a $5.8 billion cut, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation and the Congressional Budget Office.

Some of this re-engineering is straight out of the traditional Republican playbook. Corporate taxes, along with those on wealthy Americans, would be slashed on the presumption that when people in penthouses get relief, the benefits flow down to basement tenements.

Some measures are barely connected to the realm of taxation, such as the lifting of a 1954 ban on political activism by churches and the conferring of a new legal right for fetuses in the House bill — both on the wish list of the evangelical right.

With a potentially far-reaching dimension, elements in both the House and Senate bills could constrain the ability of states and local governments to levy their own taxes, pressuring them to limit spending on health care, education, public transportation and social services. In their longstanding battle to shrink government, Republicans have found in the tax bill a vehicle to broaden the fight beyond Washington.

The result is a behemoth piece of legislation that could widen American economic inequality while diminishing the power of local communities

Mr. Trump and the Republican leadership in Congress — stymied in their efforts to repeal Obamacare, and short of legislative achievements — have signaled absolute resolve to get a tax bill passed by the end of the year. As the sense has taken hold that Washington is now a trading floor where any deal is worth entertaining so long as it brings votes, interest groups have fixed on the tax bill as a unique opportunity to further their agendas.

“There’s a Christmas-tree aspect to the bill,” said C. Eugene Steuerle, a Treasury official during the Reagan administration and now a senior fellow at the Urban Institute. As an example, he cited the provisions in the House bill designed to appeal to the religious right.

Wonder how many conservatives on the board are good with this tax cut for the wealthy and tax increase for others while causing many to lose their health insurance? I'm guessing the "pro lifers" still believe in trickle down economics.

A couple things first of all you aren't losi your health insurance if you CHOOSE not to purchase it. Secondly only way taxes go up in 2027 is if congress doesn't renew tax cuts.
This is a legit question for the board liberals. What is your ideal tax plan. I'll keep it simple. 2 income families with two kids. One is making 35000/year
One is making 70000 a year
One makes 140000 and one makes 500000

WHAT CONS ARE DOING WILL DO HUGE DAMAGE TO U.S. BUT THEY
DO NOT CARE - THE HAVE TO PASS SOMETHING TO PAY OFF BIG
CONTRIBUTORS WITH HUGE TAX CUTS OTHERWISE NO BIG MONEY
CONTRIBUTIONS AS L. GRAHAM HONESTLY STATED. THINGS IN THE
BILL LIKE CITIZENSHIP FOR FETUSES ARE JUST INSANE - THEY GO
AGAINST ALL HISTORICAL TRADITONS OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION.
THE SAME BUNCH THAT COMPLAINED SO LOUDLY THAT OBAMACARE
HAD ONLY 18 MONTHS OF HEARINGS ARE PUSHING THIS THRU IN 2 WEEKS
INSANE. BUT INSANE SEEMS TO BE REPUBLICANS NEW BYWORD

CUT TAXES ON ALL THOSE GROUPS, 49% TAX RATE ON ALL ABOVE $2 MILL YR.
CUT TAXES TO MAX 12% MARGINAL RATE ON ALL BELOW
DOUBLE THE ESTATE TAX BUT RAISE THE FLOOR TO $20 MILL.
HUGE EXIT TAX ON ANY COMPANY MOVING JOBS OUT OF THE U.S.
TAX ON ALL WALL STREET TRADES TARGETED AT HEDGE FUNDS AND
PROGRAM TRADERS, TAX CARRIED INTEREST AT 50% CUT TAXES ON SMALL
BUSINESSES (GROSS INCOME $15 MILL OR LESS) TAX OVERSEAS PROFITS
WHETHER MONEY RETURNS TO U.S. OR NOT. GO AFTER OFFSHORE SHELL

That's not the whole story and you know it.

Wrong. Furthermore, the wealthy corporations won't need that renewable tax cut, it's permanent.

So I take it you're fine with the income redistribution from the poor and middle class to the wealthy while increasing the national debt. bonzo. sad.

FOOL!! IF THEY ARE CUTTING MY TAXES AND RAISING YOURS ITS - YOUR MONEY!!!
STOP BEING A DITTO HEAD AND USE YOUR HEAD.

What is being redistributed. It’s their money

It is not their money. Furthermore, the republicans are already talking about paying for that tax cut that pays for itself by growing the economy by cutting programs AND cutting social security to offset that debt that won't happen. moron.

Deal with it!

PS--- you're getting more senile every second.

Two bipartisan tax policy groups have said every tax bracket gets a tax cut. So yeah I tend to believe them over a retired cabinet maker out wayne. Whose money is it then?

SOME people in every tax bracket. By the time it's reached it's 10 year life MANY people would have been better off without the tax cut. And every single study I've seen has stated the wealthy get helped the most, by far. So don't attempt to play this stuff with me. Anyone with any sense knows this is a big give away to the rich, will create over a trillion dollar debt, increase inequality, and cause cuts in needed programs. No, not just programs for the poor. And soon afterwards, you pals the deficit hawks will start crying debt, debt, debt, and try to tell the nation that we have to cut social security and such stuff. They've already started.

The tax rate on the top bracket goes from 39 to 38 so once again explain how they are helped the most. There is no tax overhaul that would benefit everyone. We all know you don't want rich people to keep more of their own money. The doubling of the child tax credit. How does that hurt the middle class. The doubling of standard deduction how does that hurt the middle class. Answer is it does t.

Senate Deal Is Said to Include New Tax Hikes (5:59 p.m.)
GOP Senators are discussing a new compromise for their planned tax overhaul that would increase taxes in future years, Senator David Perdue, a Georgia Republican, said Thursday.

The amount of the increases was still under discussion, Perdue said -- though he said $350 billion in increases over 10 years had been discussed.

AND GUESS WHAT FOOL - THAT TAX INCREASE IS NOT GOING TO THOSE FILTHY
RICH FUNKS THAT FUND THEIR CAMPAIGNS.

No they didn't you f'ucking liar.

Here is the link.

If you are intelligent enough to look at the table on page 10, you will see the lower income people actually pay more taxes while the higher income people get a tax reduction.

This thread is the exact proof of how easily some middle class Republicans are duped into voting for rich people who look out for other rich people and laugh behind their back at how stupid they are in the process.

I think you don't understand what you are reading with regards to that chart. read the paragraphs accompanying that chart and get back to me. I'll give you a hint. Obamacare subsidies.

DONT MAKE THEM STOP LYING - IF YOU DO - THEY WONT HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY
TABLE ON PAGE 10 IS A BEAUTIFUL THING.

Wrong, the positive numbers are higher taxes.

Don't be a dumbass.

what’s the title of the chart? What does the preceding paragraph say about said chart? Nowhere in your chart does it mention taxes except for the elimination of tax credits for Obamacare. So once again read your graph.

Seriously, are you intelligent enough to realize a positive number in the chart for Tax Revenue means that group of people will pay MORE in taxes? And conversely, a negative number in the chart for tax revenue means that group will be paying less taxes?

This isn't rocket science.

You're not intelligent enough to actually understand what that chart is depicting. The chart is saying that not taking Obamacare subsidies is a tax increase. Only in govt budgeting is not getting a subsidy a tax increase

Just so we get this on record, you are cool with a tax bill that gives breaks to every single income group except for the lowest income groups in America and at the same time increases our deficit by $1.4 billion?

"wreckless insanity fueled by greed"

yeah, well, that's like the norm for the resident insane old bastage. nothing to see here.
hammer, meet nail:

The Democratic Party lied to the American people by promising a no-lose panacea under Obamacare, which ended up harming more people than it helped, while gut-punching millions of middle class families with skyrocketing Obamacare costs and taxes. And Obama's party, now feigning suddenly concern about deficits, cheered loudly as he nearly doubled the national debt in the span of just eight years. These points highlight Democrats' hypocrisy

I'll answer for him. Yes, he's fine with that. He's a conservative, and they're always fine with it. Furthermore, they've already set their sights on reducing social security and medicare.

If you would take the time to read the FBI report it says that those numbers are in relation to getting Rid of obamacare subsidies. That is not a tax increase. Im sorry you can't understand that

Really? So if the EITC is eliminated, would that be a tax increase?

FBI? The FBI doesn't comment on tax bills. Have you lost your f'ucking mind?

Still waiting on Cuntry to understand the chart he posted.

He makes assertions and then changes the premise of the discussion after being made to look like a fool.

So you agree this bill sticks it to the lower income folks to provide the wealthy with tax breaks? And at the same time increases our deficit?

Lower income will pay zero Fed income taxes. How does that “fund” someone else keeping their own money?
