About last night - Southern Miss

For the first time in a long, long, time I left a game with time still on the clock and as I was walking out, I though to myself - "Is this the first time we've ever played a FBS opponent and were better at all 22 positions?"

Building on that thought, here is the good, the bad, and the ugly from the Herd's complete domination of Southern Miss on Saturday.

The Good -
• No holds barred – Huff, Doege, and the rest of the coaches did what you should do when the talent gap is so wide its glaring. They coached with the total disrespect for the opponent we've all been longing for. We were better, they knew it, and they coached like it didn't matter what happened on a given play because we were going to roll.
• D-Fence – With the exception of about 5 plays, USM looked like a bad FCS team on offense. Turnovers, penalties, absolutely awful line play. They were bad and our guys looked like the 85 Bears.
• Skill position depth – I think everyone who brought a jersey and plays WR, TE, or RB saw the field at some point. A lot of guys contributed and made plays when they had their opportunities. Being able to run 4-5 RB's, 5-6 WR's, and 2-3 TE's is valuable both in the present tense and for the future.

The Bad -
• One throw – Really not a lot to criticize, the only really terrible play was when Braxton hit the CB in the chest (throwing into double coverage). Looked like a straight up mis-read, which happens. Luckily it didn't cost us anything before the half.
• Not taking the points – I have no problem with being aggressive early in the game, but again better teams we need to be able to score when we have first and goal situations.

The Ugly -
• Officiating – It was pretty terrible all night, and even though we got the two most glaring calls our way (a muffled punt where they called interference despite no one touching Montgomery, and what looked like a good catch, called a catch on the field, and then overturned by blurry video) it was overall awful.
• Southern Miss gameday – Its a good thing the NCAA dropped the whole "You have to have X amount of fans to be an FBS program" thing, because USM would be getting ready to join the SWAC next year. I didn't hear an announced attendance (I wouldn't announce it either) but in reality there weren't 6,000 fans in the building. It's pretty sad how far that program has fallen in two decades.

Onward and upward to next week where we host a Coastal Carolina team coming off a win over App State and they will have a couple extra days rest having played on Thursday. Should be a pretty good matchup and of course the anniversary game is always a big one at home.

Last tidbit on Southern Miss game

I could be wrong, but I think the 8 first downs allowed Saturday were the fewest allowed to an FBS team since the '97 Ohio game - when we gave up 2 first downs the whole game.
I went back and checked game books going back to 2000 and saw some games with 9 and 10 allowed but nothing 8 or lower. I can't find anything prior to 2000.

MBB vs Toledo

After watching the football game, I watched the replay of the basketball game. After recovering from a bout with vertigo from the camera work (don't they use tripods?), I understand that this season will certainly be a work in progress. With that said, I think the over/under for wins will be 10. Unfortunately, I'm leaning towards the under. Please don't crucify me, it's only my opinion.

Staff Changes

I posted this on the paid board, and nobody seemed concerned about it, but it's a huge sign of incompetence.

In yesterday's game, right before the half, there was an overturned call on what was originally ruled a long completion for Southern Miss. The receiver "caught" the ball and was ruled down at 2:38. The clock continued to run (no stopping after a first down anymore unless final two minutes of the half). At 2:14 left on the clock, before the next play was snapped, the refs stopped the game to review.

The play was overturned and ruled an incompletion. Southern Miss then went back to facing a third-and-forever deep in their territory, but the clock remained at 2:14. Due to the call being overturned, the clock should have stopped on the incompletion and not continued to roll down to 2:14. Southern Miss should have snapped the ball on third down at 2:38, but they did it at 2:14. It's bad enough that the refs didn't notice this. It's even worse that Marshall has a full staff who didn't say anything about it. Those 24 seconds could be huge when getting the ball back before the half with that little time on the clock.

It may seen like a fairly little thing, but it is a major miss by Marshall. It shows that they simply don't have a good head of a head coach on their staff. And that isn't necessarily a knock on Huff. Some coaches just don't have the ability to focus on those things. Good head coaches identify their faults and make sure another staff member who is better at that task helps. Clearly, that isn't the case at Marshall.

I've defended Huff and this staff a lot. But this is inexcusable for Huff and nobody on the staff to identify this. It's also a miss by reporters not to ask about this particular scenario and how the entire Marshall staff missed it.

That got me thinking about potential staff changes if Huff is retained. Adam Fuller was just released at Florida State and has a good track record. Not sure he'd be willing to drop down to Marshall nor does he have the same relationships on this staff, but it's an opportunity. Also, ECU isn't retaining their head coach. Their first-year OC has significant experience working with Doege. I mentioned this in a post a few months ago where I said not to be surprised if the ECU OC or another coach who has worked with those two a lot ends up linking back up with Doege. If Marshall loses a coach on offense, look for John David Baker or Graham Harrell to join the staff. Both of those coaches have had far bigger titles at bigger schools, so it may be a stretch to think they'd take a position coach spot at Marshall, but if they don't get hired on elsewhere, there is a chance.

MBB Thoughts vs Toledo

Game 2 vs Toledo Observations:
  • Transition defense was pretty awful. Got beat down the court a few times in the first few minutes to set the tone. Consistently weren’t matching up quick enough and Toledo took advantage (11 fast breakpoints for Toledo compared to 3 for Marshall).
  • Mikal Dawson shoots a ton of 3s. His shot diet was basically all 3s at Akron too. Now his volume is way up. Hes 3/18 from deep to start the year. I’m not convinced hes a good shooter at all.
  • I really like the pace Dezayne Mingo plays at. Saw some good things out of him in transition too which is needed on this team. Hes probably the best passer on the team. He held up well at the POA defensively too.
  • Got to give Toledo credit, they made a ton of tough shots, but I thought the staff could have made it harder on them by simply downing (icing) screens. We saw it a lot in game 1, but barely saw it yesterday. The Rockets were going middle and getting to the paint too easily (52 paint points). Forcing them to the baseline would have put the defense in better position.
  • Again, foul trouble came back to bite them. The second half was a foul fest. Have to learn how to defend without fouling. 32 FTA for Toledo compared to to 17 for Marshall.
  • Not the best debut for Jalen Speer.
  • Both Gibbs play really tough and hard. Not the most skilled by any means, but glad they are on our side. Jakob was great down the stretch.
  • Will Moore has as pure of a shooting form as you will see. He made some plays defensively as well. A long way to go, but such an exciting young player to have.
Overall, I liked the effort. Still so many new pieces and ran into a really organized and tough team. This is a game that will help this Herd team a lot moving forward.
