This is something encouraging to look at (particularly for you whiners having trouble being happy about being 7-1).

Since 2013, the year Marshall football righted ship, we are 30-6 (83.3%). That puts us at number 7 in FBS in that time span, behind FSU, OSU, MSU, Baylor, Bana, and Clemson. In terms of pure number of wins, only FSU (33), OSU (33), and MSU (32) have more. That's some good company!

For frame of reference,
Boise: 25-9 (73.5%)
Ohio: 18-15 (54.5%)
ECU: 22-12 (64.7%)
BYU: 22-12 (64.7%)
WKU: 22-11 (66.7%)
Louisville: 24-9 (72.7%)
WVU: 14-17 (45.2%)

Ummm, and in that same time frame of all the schools you have listed, where do you think their Strength of Schedules would rank compared to MU's??

Our SOS isn't severely harmed by our OOC, its the In Conference teams that really beat us up.

You can put lipstick on a pig....you get it. Its our conference...period. Look at the string of games were playing starting with ODU; point made.

It's not just CUSA that has poor SOS, it's any G5 conference - particularly for teams doing well in those conferences.

(All of the following data pulled from Sagarin 10/24)

AAC SOS for their four best teams are 71 (Memphis), 100 (Navy), 111 (Temple), and 125 (Houston). Best two SOS are 30 (SMU) and 34 (Tulane), which have 3 combined wins; play in the same division as Houston, Memohis, and Navy; and each had OOC conference games against currently ranked teams (Duke, Baylor, and TCU). 8 teams under 100 by rank, 4 over. 9 teams under 100 by SOS, 3 over (or at, Navy).

MAC SOS for their top four teams are 80 (WMU), 85 (BGSU), 118 (Toledo), and 124 (NIU). Best two SOS are 46 (UMASS) and 72 (CMU), with 5 combined wins. 5 teams under 100 by rank, 8 over. 8 teams under 100 by SOS, 5 over.

MWC SOS for their top four teams are 45 (Utah St), 86 (Boise), 106 (SDSU), and 114 (Air Force). Best two SOS are 45 (Utah St) and 58 (Fresno), with 6 combined wins. 5 teams under 100 by rank, 7 over (or at, SJSU). 7 teams under 100 by SOS, 5 over.

SBC SOS for their top four teams are 105 (Ark St), 107 (ULL), 113 (GASO), and 148 (App St). Best two SOS are 65 (ULM) and 92 (USA), with 4 combined wins. 3 teams under 100 by rank, 8 over. 4 teams under 100 by SOS, 7 over.

Finally, CUSA SOS for the top four teams are 89 (WKU), 96 (LT), 128 (USM), and 156 (MU).Best two SOS are 55 (UTSA) and 74 (UNT) for 1 combined win. 5 teams under 100 by rank, 8 over. 5 teams under 100 by SOS, 8 over.

So what does this tell us? Well, at first glance, that the AAC is doing great, MWC is down, MAC and CUSA or more or less even, and SBC is lagging way behind. Nothing we didn't already know. However, to back up my original point - SOS is a G5 problem, not just a CUSA problem - let's check out the P5.

Combined from all five conferences (and ND), there are only two teams over 100 by rank - Kansas (137) and Purdue (102). There are also only two teams over 100 by SOS - NCState (108) and Baylor (101). After seeing this compared to 36 over-at 100 by rank and 29 by SOS in the G5 (plus BYU and Army), can you truly just put all the blame on CUSA? Because it looks like all five G5 conferences to me.

Strength of Schedule can't even be measured until a season is OVER. Even then it is a very unstable measurement. Strength of Schedule my ass.

Quality losses too right>?

You can only play those schools that will schedule you!!! Marshall's poor SOS numbers aren't entirely MU's fault. You can't go on the road and play every tough game.
While that is completely true, and I don't disagree with you, the SOS does make the original poster's point an apples-oranges issue.
It's ridiculous to try to compare our record to FSU, OSU, MSU, Clemson, etc. given the disparity is SOS.

Being 30-6 is a good thing, vs. anyone. Yes, it's not quite comparable to teams like Alabama and Clemson, but it shows how far the program has come since the days of Snyder. Our team would still have a much better record than Snyder in the old C-USA.

This tells me that SOS is bogus.

No it doesn't. It's all relative. Those teams with the higher SOS are teams full of 4 and 5 star players who face other teams comparable to theor talent level.

We are a team full of 2 and 3 star pkayers playing teams comparable tonour talent level.

Now if we had FSU's talent and were playing the schedule we are now it wouldn't be a fair comparison.

We own our competition in the same fashion they own theirs.

We own our competition in the same fashion they own theirs.

I would say that statement is correct, but only if there was some agreement to permanently cease and desist complaining about how the college playoff is unfair to Marshall, how the P5 are committing anti-trust violations by locking out the G5, or that an 11-0 Marshall was getting shat on by the world for not appearing on the playoff poll last November.

If there is one thing Marshall fans are known for, its not understanding the level of play that they are watching, and wanting to act like there is parity between what SEC teams go up against and the schools Marshall plays. I promise you, had we not lost to Ohio (thank god we did), there would be threads on this board complaining that this team was getting shafted in the polls for not being in the Top 10.
