What was the top tax rate when "America was great"?

The 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s
Over the next three decades, the top federal income tax rate remained high, never dipping below 70 percent.

Hell, i'm with her. No shit. A progressive tiered tax system would actually be great for the economy IMHNBSO. why wouldn't it?

Imagine how much multi millionaires would spend and put back into the economy in order to lower their taxable income below the highest tiers and avoid paying out 2/3s or more in income tax.

One thing's for certain, nobody posting here would have to worry about paying that high of a tax rate.

Seriously, I'm for it.

How do you “spend” to avoid taxes?

You can use tax sheltered accounts like IRAs, 401k, cash balance defined benefit plans, 1031 exchanges, opportunity zone investments, etc...but you can’t deduct spending and there are typical limits to most of those tax sheltering vehicles. Plus, the money in those accounts eventually come due (mandatory minimum withdrawal, etc) unless you die, then even still there are often tax implications for beneficiaries getting these funds.

Im certainly no CPA but I dabble in personal financial planning. In my opinion the tax code/rules highly favor real estate investment (depreciation, 1031 exchanges, now new opportunity zone investment). It seems odd to me that in my taxable account I pay a certain % in capital gains but in a private syndication apartment investment we can claim “depreciation “ as a loss and basically pay minimal taxes for a while.

However real estate involves way may due diligence and work and time than just throwing it all in VTSAX.

Honest question how many people actually paid that top rate? What percentage of taxes did the bottom half of earners pay then vs now? Same for the top 10% of earners now

The 60s and 70s were “great” economies???
If they weren't, then why in the hell does the orange-faced orangutan you elected President want to take us back to that era? You might want to revisit the front of that asshole red hat you and Kanye like to wear.

You're right....most of the wealthy found ways to avoid that tax rate.....just like they do now, and I'm not putting that down....you'd be stupid not to maximize your profits.

However, it's not like this 70% rate is a brand new idea. It's been done before. ...And, I'm not advocating a 70% rate....however, I don't understand how some can scoff at the idea and then say trickle down is the way to go. Good grief, the data is pretty overwhelming how ineffective trickle down has been for the masses.

poor man never gave me a job

STUPID, LAZY FAILING TO GO BEYOND THE PROPAGANDA/TALKING POINTS THINKING.

NO ONE OTHER THAN A POOR MAN EVER GAVE YOU A JOB.

A RICH MAN DOES NOT "GIVE" YOU A JOB, SEE THE BUSH DEPRESSION.

WALMART - THE BIGGEST EMPLOYER IN THE WORLD - DOES WALMART CATER TO THE RICH
OR ARE THEIR CUSTOMERS THE POOR?

IF ALL THOSE POOR WALMART CUSTOMERS HAD NO MONEY - HOW MANY PEOPLE WOULD WALMART
EMPLOY.

HOW MANY JOBS ARE SEARS "GIVING" OUT.

LAZY DITTO HEAD THINKING LIKE THAT IS WHAT MAKES AMERICA WEAK HERDMAN.
THINK BEYOND THE PROPAGANDA (IF YOUR NOT A RUSSIAN?)

CHEVY'S CHART CLEARLY PROVES THAT THE MIDDLE CLASS SHARED IN THE WEALTH WHILE DEMS WERE IN CONTROL OF GOVT - THEN IN 1980 UNDER REAGAN WHEN REPUBLICANS GAINED DOMINANCE THE MIDDLE CLASS GOT THE SHAFT. PRODUCTIVITY AND MEDIAN INCOME TRACKED UNTIL 1980 - ITS CLEAR AS A BELL TO ANYONE WHO LOOKS AT THE CHART OR PAYS ATTENTIONS TO CURRENT AFFAIRS.

I see you completely miss my point. It’s the bottom that’s not paying into the system. During. The 60’s and 70’s a larger contribution came from the bottom quintiles than today. I have no problem with the top paying more if everyone contributes like during the 60s and 70s

I would agree to that.

I've met poor assholes and rich assholes.

Reality is it takes money to start something and invest. If I get a piece of that to support my family and have a nice life I am not going to go around bitching about someone being rich.

Class warfare junkies.

What percent of your adjusted gross income can be used as a tax deduction, dimwit?

there is class warfare all right and the people who buy republican politicians and rig the system are kicking the middle class' ass in the war. just look at chevy's chart above - middle class was doing well until 1980 when reagan/trickle down/ republicans became dominant. you can look at that date and see where the middle class started getting screwed. wives had to work help support the family, middle class programs and tax deductions slashed and the table
was tilted to the rich campaign donors who rig the system.
so if they have enough money to rig the system TAX THE HELL OUT OF THE EXCESS to even the field for hard working middle class Americans.

Has there ever been a liberal on this board (anywhere for that matter) explain how simply raising taxes creates jobs and increases incomes?

That's why it is important to get a skill set and bring value to a company. And, nitwit, someone has to build, repair, maintain, program, and design the robots. Unskilled labor is in trouble. Get a skill!

No. It makes them feel better to think they got one on some rich guy. Emotional based logic.

There sure has. You just don't have the intellect to understand it. If someone gives a trillion dollars to 10 wealthy millionaires, there spending habits change little to none. But give that trillion dollars equally to the lower and middle classes and they'll spend it, because they need a better truck, a washing machine that works, and new clothes for their kids. It creates demand. Money changes hands more times. Instead the wealthy hoard money. It's that simple.

I've never quite understood the animus the left has toward those with wealth. Another man or woman's wealth is nobody's concern except theirs & their financial advisors.

if they had to hire more people to operate the machines than to do the work manually - they wouldn't need the robots would they.

soon you will be obsolete - you are all but obsolete now. maybe you better be learning how to design a robot.

and tell the truth - no rich man has ever given you a job. like most people you've never even met a rich man.

and you've never heard any one of us put down anyone because he is rich, hell i love bill and Hillary, warren buffet, bill gates, WE JUST THINK THEY SHOULD PULL THEIR OWN WEIGHT AND NOT HAVE WORKING PEOPLE PAY THEIR WAY FOR THEM - AND YOU KNOW WHAT - SO DO THEY.

it's only poor saps like you cons who are angry at the world because you feel like everyone is taking advantage of you - not everyone is - just the people you vote for.
