Via yahoo sports... The 12 team model that was put on the table last month apparently would feature the 5 "Power 5" champs, the highest ranked G5 champ, and 6 at-large (IE SEC/Big10/ACC teams).

If expansion is going to happen it will be in 2024 or 2025... Current TV deal runs out in 2025.

Conferences examine 12-team football playoff

Total BS. No more than the "Play-In" game for the NCAA Tourny.

The Top G5 gets the opportunity to get rolled by Alabama in the first round.
They should take the winners of all the conferences for the 12 team playoff.
Not the P-6 champs, 6 at-large P6, and the poor sap who will be rolled by the #1 team.

Total BS.

This is great. Aresco in the past has detested calling the AAC a "Group of 5" conference. Now he has to admit the idea of the AAC being a "P6" Conference is just silly.
He also has to kiss some ass at the rest of the G5 who, probably do oppose the CFP format, but didn't appreciate him thumbing his nose at them when he was riding the jockstrap of UCF's success and not considering the AAC to be on their level.

No chance this ever happens... nor should it.

If you think this year's MAC or CUSA champ belongs in the playoffs you are delusional. It would also totally devalue being in one of the actual P4 leagues, and let's face it the TV folks would never allow that.

Best case scenario is the G5 leagues band together to get the top ranked G5 champ and one dedicated at-large spot for a second G5 team.

That’s a hot take, a hot steaming pile of a take.

Meanwhile Florida is losing to Samford at home 42-28 in the first half. Playoff game scores like that WILL happen if everyone had access.

Playoffs need every conference champ or it’s bullshit.

The goal of the expandrd playoff will be to put the 12 best teams on the field and thus make the most revenue possible... There hasn't been a year in the modern era where there would be more than 2 deserving G5 teams.

You can choose to be naive, and romance the idea that football should adopt a basketball model where every Cinderella team "has a chance" (event though they don't in reality)... Or you can live in the real world where having 2 seats at a 12 person table is astronomically better than 0 seats at a 4 person table.

I choose reality with the understanding that the SEC, Big10, ACC and Pac12 are varying degrees better than the G5 leagues.

Under your theoretical nonsense model, Michigan should immediately petition to get in the MAC and win it every year for the next 25+ since it's an easy road to the playoffs they would never be derailed from.

Would there be occasional upsets in the ridiculous, all G5 champs matter model? Certainly... Would there be exponentially more 55-0 drubbings by Bama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, etc? Absolutely.

I remember in the movie Demolition Man, every restaurant in the future was a Taco Bell. Maybe the SEC should add Ohio State and Michigan and have only one conference that plays for the NC every year.

Playoffs remain an answer to a question no one asked.

The focus of evil in the sports world, our lords and masters at ESPN, will have as many rounds of playoffs as they think they can sell and, as a part of that, try to see if it can sell the "little engine that could" slot to the G5.

Logic and reason have no role in it. If logic and reason were a part of it, Georgia, the best team from the best conference and the only major undefeated school, would go to the Sugar Bowl on New Year's night, win, and be declared national champions the next day. Many dozen other teams would have what they consider good seasons and get rewarded for that.

But, no, an exhausting crush of a schedule, playing into the dead of winter, for one champion and everyone else is a POS.

Thanks ESPN.

I think the 8 or 12 team playoff will be a reality, but may not happen until current contract runs out. Too many hands are in the money pot. A Marshall undefeated team who wins the SBC could make it into a new CFB Playoff in 2023 or 2024,
