Saw an interesting show on the local PBS channel the other day about Milwaukee which was run by socialists for 50 years. Fiscally conservative, they were shunned by east coast socialists because they weren't about rhetoric....they were about getting things done like building sewers, roads, public parks, etc. In fact, they were called "Sewer Socialists" by the east coast crowd.

Eventually...most of their reforms were accepted by the country. Interesting show... recommend it if it's broadcast on your neighborhood.

Not to take this in a different direction, but I've spent the last couple of weeks looking at real estate online in Milwaukee solely because of how cheap some cool condos/townhouses are. There are some that overlook a nice river area downtown for fairly cheap and then some others that are extremely cheap in other areas that appear to be nice.

I don't know if I'd ever like visiting Milwaukee, but I can't imagine you don't at least break even on renting out some of these places. Is the city a shithole?

Milwaukee has nice parts, and piss poor parts, pretty much like any other city. Very nice spots by Lake Michigan, and you can take the ferry across the lake and I'll pick you up so we can hang out at the brewpub, hopefully during the holidays when the coeds are out and about.

Lastly, if you're in Milwaukee checking them out, pick up a few bags of cheese curds, and a few tenderloins from Dahmer's Meat Market.

I agree with MHF.

Chicago has tons more to do.. so, my travels have mostly been business related. However, the team that lived there loved it.

Summerfest is one hell of a deal, and I do appreciate WI folks take on life - they are pretty laid back and in favor of a good time. My two favorite football game experiences have been at a Packers and UW game....just a great time at both. And Miller Park is a damned fine baseball stadium.

Just north is Kohler and the All American club...a true 5 star resort. And Road America is nearby Kohler.

Summers in this neck of the woods are glorious.
Heat isn't overwhelming during the day, and it cools down nice at night.

I have found Wisc and Minnesota people/culture to be probably my favorite in the US. It’s just the weather that is awful. Absolutely miserable for the majority of the year then a glorious summer then back to misery. Good caring people, not pretentious, no painful slowness of the south but not in a giant rush, not as much fatalism as Appalachians, etc.

Im not sure I could have handled the winters in Madison or Rochester if residency would have taken me there.

My daughter was a camp counselor at Elkhart Lake for two years, cool place. Funny, the camp was owned and run by Indiana University. Never could figure that one out.

I know why. You familiar with what used to be called 'normal colleges'? Basically, teacher schools. The one up that way merged with Indiana University, and when the normal college closed down, Indiana remained as the owner. I guess it's legal, but you would think the state of Wisconsin would buy it back.

This guy is the quintessential Wisconsinite - he's a former news guy who's now making a pretty good living as a comedian thru this character.
