App State

Huntington isn’t exactly a Mecca for entertainment.
What??? Huntington has a very VIBRANT night life and scene!! Key to enjoying such is the ability to dodge the bullets and avoid the muggings! If you can, guarantee that you can find available your drug of choice, or at least you've ever heard of . . . . . . . and a few more you've NEVER heard of!!

Have you ever been to Huntington??🤣

Fans drive in from hours away to attend these games in Boone. You would think Teays Valley is a 7 hr drive from Htgn for some folks in WV.
I live in Huntington. Fans drive hours to attend a Marshall game, not unique to Boone or any school.
And other than the campus area, South Bend was a shit hole.

Dumb post which holds no validity except to rip on the city in which our programs are located. Amazing.

Yeah, dudes act like this is hell on earth. I travel extensively and I have been to many places worse than Huntington. Raleigh has its nasty areas, Durham is a pit. St Louis, Detroit, Baltimore. Gary Indiana may be the most disgusting place in the USA. Huntington has its warts but some of these claims are laughable.

Those places listed aren’t really a hotbed for college athletics.

Agree with most of these... Except Raleigh.

Here is a short list off the top of my head, of places I've been in the past 5-10 years, worse off than Huntington... South Bend, Toledo, Akron, St. Louis, most of Chicago, Flint, Memphis (except Beale Street), New Orleans (except the French Quarter), Columbia SC, Brownsville TX, Atlantic City, Fayetteville NC

Just saying every town or city has its warts. Huntington is an old city whose best days have likely passed it by.
But I wlll say, the Downtown is as vibrant and busy most nights than many larger cities.

I was in Fort Worth for conference in June and after 5pm, that place was a ghost town. Eery.

didn’t need to put old in your name… it’s obvious from your grumpy post

I lived in Huntington for 8 years in the early 2000's. Still go at least 5-6 times a year for games and to meet up with old friends. I love Huntington and have only had 1 issue there. We had my wife's car window broken into when we were in college. But is was our fault, we parked at a church and she put her purse in the trunk and someone saw her do it. We moved back to Nicholas county in 2009 and I have had more crime committed on me here than in Huntington.

You need to go back and read the post you quoted again.
I need another cup of coffee, not sure how I missed that. Outside of Duke basketball, still not a hotbed for college athletics. NC State will put together a decent team about as often as us recently.

That was, probably, the most eye opening thing about the trip.

You really would think Notre Dame and their alumni living nearby, would want to live in an area that doesn't resemble Huntington.
Empty buildings, graffiti, overgrown brush, etc., not something you ever would expect to find for someplace like ND.

Just head down the road to Gary. That place looks like some town in Afghanistan. Scary.

Agreed... I didn't expect it to be Beverly Hills, but I also didn't expect it to be as awful as it was. If you were more than 3-4 blocks from ND campus it looked like early 2000's Detroit hood.

Are there places worse than Huntington? Yes. That doesn't mean that Huntington is all that great either. This state in general is pretty boring. It's held back by "we're good enough" thinking. Any time someone attempts to bring in something new they're met with resistance.

Case in point. Look at the pushback we got when we wanted to build the soccer stadium. That building was falling apart and was unsafe, but people just couldn't let go of it. The guy charged with caring for it even said it needed to go that fixing the roof alone was going to be 3+ million.

This state is stuck where it's at because residents and leadership refuse to admit what's wrong and do anything about it.

Like your post. Instead of just admitting there are better places than Huntington could aspire to be you reach for places like Gary, Indiana to say well we're better than Gary, IN. Well congratulations.

I am not saying it's utopia, there are better places, no question. Huntington has a ton of issues but to act like its some third world city and Raleigh or anywhere else is perfect, is just damn stupid and shortsighted. Either people don't travel a lot or they just get their jollies from piling on.
I'll be one of the first to say our state is archaic in it's thinking and how far behind we are. No question.

The only cities that I have ever visited that I would consider close to ideal would be Charleston, SC and San Diego. But those cities have issues as well, like any city or town. Get into the inner city neighborhoods of any place and it's usually not pretty. Case in point - I hate Atlanta, it sucks. But you get into Buckhead or Woodstock - very nice areas.

Some cities are definitely better than others... For a number of reasons, some they control and some they don't. You mentioned San Diego, a beautiful city, and it certainly helps that they may have the best weather in the country.

A few of the nicer cities Ive been to (not perfect by any means, but nice)... Indianapolis, Denver, Chattanooga, Savannah, Rochester, Charleston SC, San Antonio

I love San Diego and have spent time there on multiple occaisions...great city great weather but I'll never forget walking through the streets with the smell of human urine and feces floating through the air....

Huntington is like alot of areas in WV. Come to nicholas county wv. It's sad, run down houses, no good paying jobs, crime (drugs). Heck, this year alone we have had 3 cops shot and 1 killed literally 10 min from my house, plus multiple other drug related murders. Huntington gets a bad rap and I always hate when people in my area bust on it. Most of these hillbillies only leave their county to go to morgantown or Myrtle Beach. Huntington could be so much more with the right leadership and WV as a hole is full of negative backwards leadership.

App state stadium capacity is about 8,000 less than the Joan so sellouts come a little easier.
As of this year it is even, but Marshall doesn’t play a Saturday FBS opponent until Oct. 29.

That’s not a complaint or an excuse…. Conference switch and a very good Wednesday conference home game are the reasons, but it is certainly something.

The truth about Huntington is that it isn’t nearly as bad as some let on.

The truth about Huntington is that it definitely has room to improve.

The truth about Huntington is that it has an aging and declining population.

The truth about Huntington is that it takes a lot of effort to battle the drug epidemic that is not at all understated. It’s very bad.

The truth about Huntington is that there is no area that is not touched by the drug problem. Ritter Park, West end, East end, Riverfront are all rough areas.

The truth about Huntington is the problem areas butt right up against many of the better parts of town, which creates an issue that you feel you can’t get away from it

Huntington does not effectively use the riverfront at all. The flood wall is absolutely necessary but it’s like the city hasn’t even tried to utilize it. Ever.

I see the drug issue up close due to my job. My job is not even related to the drug issue but being in the city in the overnight hours 5 nights a week highlights the situation for me. I see dozens of people aimlessly riding around on clearly stolen children’s bicycles, with clearly stolen backpacks that are nicer than most students have, in the middle of the night. Cleaning up abandoned properties is a positive step.

I think downtown Huntington has done a good job of updating the dining & night life. I have always felt safe there.
