C-USA 2022 Football Schedule

The more baffling part of this is how Judy is somehow STILL the commish.
I'd have voted her out once this happened.

The article says the CUSA contract runs out next year, which also states CBS could decrease the deal's final season if we all left.

I'd inquire how much more the SBC gets if MU and the other 3 join. It may be worth paying out, maybe half on our own and half on the new TV deal.

That may be the entire reason for the matter, CUSA is going to be exposed for how horribly low valued it is, and even more so with 3 empty spots. That may be enough to give incoming FCS schools second thoughts.
Wouldn't shock me if the other future AAC schools aren't saying anything because they know if CUSA has just them and not the departing members their value is truly shown, and could affect the new AAC deal once they join the following year.

In short, CUSA sold their value to FCS programs moving up as did the future AAC members who were needed to fill in departing members, and are hiding their numbers.

Its funny that the 3 teams who were asked to leave for a conference that didn't need to expand as it is already a very strong conference, is actually a message that those 3 are the most valued.

I'd be mad too.

C-USA is the Kanye West of conferences. We dumped them, and they refuse to let us go and keep trying to get us back.

I liked the last paragraph in that article, where someone from Marshall contacted another C-USA team for a game. Wonder who it could have been? Probably had to be one of five teams - WKU, MTSU, Charlotte, FAU, or FIU.
My money is WKU. They are the most logical team to attempt to keep ties with due to the "rivalry" that has emerged since 2014. Outside of USM, WKU is probably the only team that Marshall fans really care about one way or the other.

I would venture to guess that if you did a poll among Marshall fans asking what team they would most like to keep a series with, WKU would win in a landslide.

I read on another board that the rumor is we contacted MTSU... No idea if that is true or not, but I would assume it was one of those two (WKU or MTSU).

I am curious who takes Appy's spot as our OoC opponent once this is all ironed out.

MU, and the rest of the SBC, should make it clear that we will never play any CUSA team in any sport unless they drop this ridiculous matter.

More than that, I don’t consider WKU a “rival”. They are in a state that borders WV, so are 11 other G5 schools. So what? They are in a different time zone. Almost 300 miles away. I don’t know anybody who went to WKU, don’t know any WKU fans. Don’t care.

Marshall fans have an issue with the term “rival”. Rival does not mean that we were both good at football (or basketball if you are old enough to remember when we were good at that sport) at the same time as some other school in some conference in the succession of conferences we have been in. I have heard people call Miami, Ohio, Furman, Appy State, Toledo, Central Florida, Western Kentucky, UT Chattanooga, Akron, and probably 10 others “rivals”. You can argue about Ohio, I will respectfully disagree, but the rest are just teams we happened to be good at the same time. Not rivals.

I was really hoping that two of the three out of La Tech, WKU, and MTSU would have also been able to make the jump to the SBC, but I guess the bad blood lasts more than 7 or 8 years, or however long some left the SBC.

Im certain that is the week we were calling about... If we don't pick up a CUSA team we will probably be looking at playing 2 FCS games. All the independents have their dance cards filled, as Im sure all teams in a league do by this point.
I may be in the minority on this, but I will gladly stomach a 2 FCS opponent season just to get out of CUSA. I really don't expect the 2022 team to be Access Bowl contenders anyways so just take the hit and get out of dodge.

The SBC will never take LaTech back. A lot of bad blood there evidently. Paying attention to the way LaTech conducted themselves during all of this I can see why. Shoot if not for LaTech and their arrogance there would have been a CUSA/SBC merger or scheduling alliance a couple years ago, but LaTech thinks they're too good for ULM and ULL.

Rivalries are competitive series where both teams and fan bases pretty much despise each other. Since that 2014 game vs WKU that has become an emotional contest.

We've had this discussion before. If we looked at rivalries the way you do then no rivalry would exist.

It's bad blood and emotional games that create rivalries. Sure it helps if you share the same state or whatnot, but it comes down to the games themselves.

You knowing anyone that went or roots for WKU has absolutely no effect on the matter.

Not every rivalry is Ohio State-Michigan, Alabama-Auburn, or Texas-Oklahoma... Marshall will never have a rivalry like that. We simply don't have the history, only being D1 since the 90s.

I would say for us, the best "rivalry" we have had in the modern era is little Miami. They didn't like us, we didn't like them, both teams had a run of quality football at the same time.

Looking forward, the natural "rivals" for Marshall are App State and JMU... All three schools value football, they are in relative close proximity to each other (so fans can travel to away games) and there is a tradition of success. Assuming all three teams remain competitive in SBC East, and there isn't any reason to think they won't, then those two should develop into our "rivals" over the next decade.

Also, as a side note, it sucks that the "Battle for the Bell" is on hiatus... There is no reason MU and Ohio can't play each other every year.

Agree, App, JMU can be a passionate rivalry for us. Ohio - yeah, we need to play them every year, no question.

Not sure if JMU will turn into one or not, but thinking Coastal Carolina will be as big as App State. You have their color of green going up against the various shades of Herd green, and it's going to be like watching a Boise State game on blue turf.

Certainly there are no real “rivals” available in the SBC for MU. Nor are there any anywhere.

But, there are three angles that can make three of our games more interesting.

JMU - Marshall is a statewide school, no mater what the biased media says. We do have alumni throughout the state, including the eastern panhandle. And, of course, Marshall has a large and active alumni diaspora in the DC metro. I have no idea what JMU’s actual ticket situation is (most schools just plain lie about it) but if a couple of 1000 MU fans showed up every other year, it would put a bad taste in their mouths.

ASU - A very large population of MU alumni, and of just plain ex-WVians, live in the Piedmont Tirad and Metroliana. See JMU above.

CCU - While it has changed with the advent of a better airport, it wasn’t that long ago that Myrtle Beach’s main clientele after N & SC was southern WV. It is “WV’s 56th county” as they used to say. Today, as the area has boomed (69K population in 1960, 101K in 1970, 351K today). Many of those are retirees. (Hopefully a new retiree will return there soon). Many from southern WV.

Doesn't that mean you should see yourself off this board?
Let's not forget, you were against this from the start, and shot down any logic anyone tried to communicate with you.

I dunno...LT and New Mexico State may be a new rivalry.
MTSU vs. wku or Liberty vs. everyone.

Goddamn Sam, there are plenty of rivalries in CUSA for you to choose from.

Unless CUSA can force the 3 new SBC teams stay this year, this is over already. SBC needs to roll out their new schedules to include the new 3. Let the lawyers argue with each other!

Except a possibly of them doing that, would involve the SBC.
The SBC doesn't want to be involved in such a lawsuit unless they have to be.
