CFN: Marshall Football Preview

Poor job in research......they have Logan Osburn as a returnee......

"Going 0-12 wouldn’t be a total stunner, either, considering it’s not just about the new faces, there’s woefully little overall time logged in at the FBS level among the protected starters."

We have only went winless seven times and the last time was back in 1968.

1895 0-1-1
1897 0-3
1899 0-0-1
1908 0-6
1920 0-8
1967 0-10
1968 0-9-1

This write up is pretty bad.

So what is everyone's confident approach to how the team will do?
Its highly unlikely this team loses all their games, but given the turnover, it's gonna be tough to really cruise past anyone in SBC play.

tbh, confidence is low in terms of predicted success. But given Gibby’s defensive background, I would expect we’ll be tough to score on. That and $6 will buy you a Starbucks.

I don’t see us going 0-12. That’s laughable.

but if it ends up being a subpar season, Gib will be given a pass. A WV boy comes home to his dream job set that up perfectly. He’ll be given 4-5 seasons of excuses if needed.

A little jaded there Rawlee? When in Herd football history has a Football HC been given less than that?
Exceptions: Perry Moss (infractions, off the field)
Rick Tolley

On paper we have a lot of talented players, but almost all of them are new. Add in an entirely new staff and who really knows.

@UGA - L
Missouri State - W
EKU - W
@MTSU - Toss up. MTUS has been pretty bad of late, but Murfreesboro has been a house of horrors for us.
@ULL - Toss up. Don't know what they have returning, but they'll have us circled after last year.
ODU - W
Texas State - W
@Coastal - Toss Up. Coastal is trending down, but they've not been an easy game for us.
JMU - Toss Up. We should win this game at home, but a loss to JMU wouldn't shock me.
@GaState - W
@Appy - L Even though they are on a downturn, it's a rivalry game and Boone isn't an easy place to play.
Ga Southern - W

Christ. As usual you miss the point. Seriously, try harder.

It's not about administration firing the coach. It's about the fan base being upset with the (lack of) results. This is another Doc type setup where we heard FROM THE FANS (emphasis for W-S benefit) the "young team" excuse for almost 5 seasons. He got every excuse imaginable.

Huff wasn't given any benefit of the doubt. Every comment was scrutinized, every action judged. The fan base almost totally ignored the inception of the new NIL standard and rarely mentioned the impact on the coach's ability operate within that environment YOY. Not saying it was right or specifically wrong for this discussion, but because Huff was looking for bigger and better, didn't refer to this as his dream job, wasn't a WV native, many fans wanted him gone despite actually putting a championship team on the field.

Gibs has the right credentials for this fan base and will be patient beyond the time they should be, if it comes to that. I do think Gib has overall more experience than both Doc and Huff at leading an organization. The big question is the coordinators. They ultimately call the plays and put the pieces on the field. Did he get the right guys for the job. It took Huff 4 seasons to do that. Time will tell for Gib.

Fair points. But I asked about the coordinators already. The OC has actual OC experience, while Morrison is an alum with extensive Dside experience. What’s your take?

This is what concerns me about the new players. The coach brought in approximately 13 players from FCS and about 10 players from D2/NAIA and D3. A good number of the players coach brought in from D1 were freshmen who didn't play in many games. We also lost our punter; kicker; long snapper; best WR and a QB who was second team All SBC.

This might be a difficult year since Gibson got a late start in the fall portal. He seemed to do a better job in the spring portal with recruiting. I give him a pass on this year since no college football coach has had to deal with such a high turnover of players.

Personally, I have more faith in the OC experience over the DC.

That's sad but true...
However, I would give him more than 2 years.
You can literally buy a team at this point...it's never going to be a rebuilding year but a reloading year...even for MU.

Imagine if any coach, first presser the week before kickoff just chuckled and said, "we're so screwed..."
I wish we would get more honest takes from them though. Just like every broadcast the guys calling the game build up both team's QBs like they're the best to ever lace them up. Just once I'd like to hear them say a guy sucks.

But let me ask this:
Who on here doubts the capabilities of the Offensive & Defensive coordinators?

Given that Rod Smith as OC was abysmal in the Big-10, as his teams finished quite badly...and he couldn't seem to make any offense work under an offense-oriented HC in Rich Rod. His only time as HC, briefly after Lovie Smith was fired from Illinois, he didn't win a game...but that's entirely forgiveable.
Seems like he can't exist without Rich Rod and when he is on his own, he doesn't do too well.
Not sure about Shannon Morrison, but his linebacker coaching seems to have done well, so I'll give him the nod over the OC since Gibson is a defensive minded HC.

Better yet, he says the fans are setting too their standards too high, given the finances, location, and by comparison, history of the program...and they need to set their expectations in a more rational manner?
Be realistic, how do you think that would go over with the fans in Huntington?
The closest we got was the immortal Mike Leach being pissed at the players' lack of play and "their fat little girlfriends" easily some of the best coach speak ever.

Leach was a national treasure

I used to be pretty good at predicting teams’ W-L records and would bet a number of Over/Unders pre-season. Now, it’s almost impossible.
I think Marshall has some really good pieces and the coordinators should do well at this level. The key is getting a group of guys who have never played together before to get in sync with each other. If they can do that, they will have a chance at a good season.
The other part of the equation is: what do other teams have to work with? With the Portal, impossible to tell.

One thing this era will do, is force head coaches to actually coach again.
I think too many at the top, when this was "illegal" got too comfortable just buying teams and players.
Now, since it's legal, everyone can do it...and some of those sleepers like Vanderbilt, are gonna start throwing money at players and winning.
The likes of Bama are going to have to actually game plan again.

Did anyone have preseason Indiana making the CFP when they were picked to finish 17th in their own conference?
