You shouldn't always just pay attention to recruiting ratings as he is unbelievably raw and shouldn't have been rated that high. He is really an athlete playing QB and needs a lot of work on mechanics, pocket awareness, and decision-making to become a serviceable FBS QB. He has a high ceiling if he gets these things worked out, but it may take another year or two to be competitive for the starting job, unless he drastically improves by the Fall. The QB competition will definitely go into the Fall with Litton being demoted to #3 on the depth chart so it will be interesting to see how things shake out between Gaines, Litton, Morrell, White, and maybe Green if he isn't considered an automatic redshirt. If Gaines isn't given a legit shot at QB then that's just sad. The guy was recruited by numerous big programs and was #14 dual threat in the country. With the problems Chase is having and Gaines getting the redshirt last year this should open up a shot for him.
