We have now lost three in a row and the last two bowl games. Does Doc get to stay simply because he won 7 in a row? What day you?

This season won't be held against John, because of COVID. Also, he won that stupid coach award that he clearly didn't deserve.

He gets to come back without any pressure on next season, so long as Hamrick is his boss. John Holliday does just enough for morons who can't see through the smoke and mirrors to keep his job. Every damn season.

You guys could get the next young and upcoming Coach to sign at Marshall. Nothing is going to change. Donors are not just going to magically write checks. Fans are not going to instantly get excited. It’s all trust. We as alumni and fans hear of a team fight during an undefeated season and ranked nationally. Some of us are not able to travel back to Huntington. So to watch the Herd we tune in to ESPN, CBS Sports, or Stadium. You lose meaningful games in Huntington. And expect us to get excited of a new young Head Coach?

I’m not trying to be confrontational- just asking a question. What would your next move be? What would get fans excited?

I appreciate what Doc has done for the program but it’s time to go in a different direction. We cannot continue to have seasons end like this.

I don’t know. I just don’t know what the next move could be or should be, for that matter.

This year seems different. I think there might actually be a coaching change. The historic collapse of the offense, contract being up, and the Doc/Hamrick comments in the HD make me think we’ve seen his last game.

Maybe this happens every year and I miss it, but I saw a lot of position coaches posting pictures on social media with their units. The comments were almost nostalgic like they knew this could be the last game.

I am very critical of his coaching, but I appreciated his comments after the game. He took the blame (as he should) and said the players should not be blamed for the collapse. I completely agree with him. I’m behind these kids 100%. They had to endure some very tough circumstances since May. I even understand some of the opt outs. For the record, Drayton was spotted on the sideline in a sling so he was injured.

I am fearful of the amount of players that may bail if there is a huge staff shakeup, but I still think we have to move on. If I had to guess, Brad Lambert is given the keys (maybe that was the plan all along). The positive would be that we should be able to retain some of those coaches and players. The negative is that we could see more of the same unless there is a major change in philosophy and offensive style.

Fingers crossed that "the coach of the year" award was an acknowledgement than many know this was going to be Docs last season---retire.

The program needs completely overhauled. Players need a complete change in leadership.

So the Cabell county health dept "prevented the players from leaving campus and going home for visits since May"??????? Who came up with that media spin in the Shewey?

Remember when Byron played with a boot on his foot and couldn't run for his life, but seldom, if ever, got sacked? That was great line protection. This line, composed of 5th year seniors, and touted to be great, couldn't stop a jr. high defensive rush. Wells was scrambling for his life constantly. Go figure.

I agree with you in much of what you say. I too hope for a change. I however, want a complete turnover from the AD on down. No staff retained. New HC with HC experience at a D2 or FCS level as a winner.
Ig players want to move on then so be it. There will be plenty of talent remaining and a new young up and coming staff with have the excitement to round up new talent. If we have a down year but are building for a future of upbeat exciting football then to me it would be worth it. I miss going to games home and away. I want to be able to do that again and a new HC and staff will allow me to do it

So you have your Freshman (QB) learn an new offense under a new Offensive Coordinator? The whole philosophy changes. You have to have the right personnel (new kids). With a new cohort of players you have to have chemistry. That takes time. Fanatical Marshall fans should really be careful what they wish for, continuity to a young (QB) is important.

I don’t discount the risk, but our QB and offense fell off a cliff. When Wells struggled, the coaches couldn’t do anything to get him turned around. The play calling was awful and put him in bad spots. His confidence was obviously gone.

Are you suggesting we extend Doc and keep the status quo?

I wouldn’t be opposed to retaining Coach Doc. I’m pretty much a Doc supporter on this board. The criticism comes at all angles. I would like to see more flexibility in Cramsey’s approach. If the case is lack of autonomy with Tim, yes, this needs to change. I just don’t think cleaning house is in the best interest. Let’s revisit this sometime in January after the Holidays and Playoff are complete. Create some distance from all this emotion and disappointment.

So you want Doc to stay? Wow!

I feel like Doc hit his ceiling. He just can’t get over the hump and we look woefully unprepared too often.

I thought the problem was the OC, then Doc got rid of Legg and we still have the same problems (inability to develop a QB and head scratching play calling). That has to be on the head coach. Either his offensive philosophy is carried over from Don Nehlen or he cannot identify good OC talent. I think it’s the former because he has hired great defensive coaches so he seems to be ok there.

Yeah, that's exactly what should happen. We should just keep ourselves in a perpetual state of keeping our tails tucked between our legs in fear of what if.

A good head coach comes in, evaluates players, and constructs an offense and defense around his new players. In time, as the right players are brought in, he can then start to shift to whichever style he prefers.

Sorry treadmill, but your mentality is what will keep us the perennial conference division runners up in what is undoubtedly the worst conference in Div I-A.

With that logic no one should ever change coaches. Risk aversion is the downfall of many.

As opposed to watching a freshman QB that seemed more than capable of leading the team at the beginning of the season and becoming completely unraveled looking completely uncoached by end of season??

Seriously. Help us all if this is the mentality of the institution.

I’m pretty much a Doc supporter on this board.
I support him too. I support him announcing a retirement and thanking the school and program keeping him around as long as they did.

I just don’t think cleaning house is in the best interest.
^^^^Perennial mediocrity status....o_O

Continuity to a young QB is important... but so is winning to a fan base. Continuity of Mediocrity should never be the goal of a football program. You're either getting better or regressing. I don't think there is much cause for debate over which of those two things is happening with the program. We have been on a downward slide since Cato's last year with the program.

We need a change, period. There have been rumblings for several years now. I know he almost always posts a winning record, but look at the level of competition. Is it not okay that we are all sick of the humiliating losses in The Joan, mistake-filled football (see yestereday's punt formation idiocy), and the terrible record vs. winning teams? Someone posted it the other day, but I can't remember the discrepancy bewteen Doc vs. .500+ compared to Doc vs. sub-.500 teams.

We should be doing to Conference USA in Football exactly what Memphis used to do to Conference USA in basketball. Don't give me the "they cheated" garbage. Because my response will just be "THEY DOMINATED." What do we not have that we need to be that dominant football program? Facilities... got that compared to all other C-USA schools. Fan base... got that compared to all other C-USA schools. Tradition... got that compared to all other C-USA schools.

Let's go get a good coach with a track record of success (either an OC or DC from a successful Power 5 school or a head coach from FBS with a winning track record), and turn this thing around!

Time for new blood. People in Huntington and not all fans are completely satisfied with the status quo. For those of you that can remember the days of the Donnan years and even Pruett the excitement we had every game. Those teams walked with a swagger and you could feel it in the stadium both at home and on the road. They came in expecting nothing but a victory against anyone they played. Under the current staff you didn't get that feeling. In the last three games we cheered for our offense just to get a first down! With the talent we had over the the majority of 11 years and only win ONE title isn't acceptable. It's pay me now or pay me later. We need someone to take over and get the train back on track!

The athletic department is financially crippled. Name two coaches that meet all the expectations of the site that would be interested in the job.

Just ask @Rock98Dog for the stats on John's winning % against teams that finished with a winning season.

Enough talk. If you're going to spread this nonsense, then the onus is now on you to provide specific details as to how woefully broke and destitute our Football program has become.

Do not speak in generalities; be specific and explain this to us all.

Love this "AD is financially crippled" argument... its my favorite!
Best way for the AD not to be financially crippled is to fill The Joan. Best way to fill The Joan is to play good teams in The Joan and win. Best way to play good teams in The Joan and win is to fire the current AD and Head Football Coach.

Also love the "who would be interested in the job" take... equally naive!
Let's fly the position and do a national search to find out! Our friend that just kicked our butts in a bowl game makes $100K less than Doc. Coastal Carolina coach makes about $375K. There are only 59 Power 5 Assistant Coaches that make more than Doc does as a head coach. It is a promotion to become "the man" as opposed to the "the coordinator" and many would likely be highly motivated to become the head coach of a Mid-Major football program that actually has a national brand due to its history.

When will we stop settling?
I can tell you right now exactly how next season will go... and the season after that... and the season after that if Marshall decides to give Doc an extension. Winning record against terrible competition, meaningless bowl games, and lots and lots of empty seats impersonating fans in the Joan. When will we stop settling and expect that Marshall honors its tradition by WINNING championships again - not just playing to get into a championship game or playing in some consolation prize bowl game.

I DON'T hate Doc... heck, I've never met the guy. I DO hate the outcomes we have had for the past decade... I hate watching us get outcoached game after game... I hate watching us get embarrassed in The Joan... I hate reading about our team getting into brawls or having our team leaders be dipsh!ts like Litton and Green (both Doc's guys). I hate mindless penalties, overhyped recruiting classes, bullsh!t injury reports, terrible play calling, and undisciplined football. Each of these are the creations of the head football coach. Sometimes, you just have to cut bait if your not catching the fish you want to catch.

Actually Huck the guy who beat Doc yesterday makes close to 300K less than Doc.
