Seems like he's always going to have one foot out the door. Not sure how you read "Timing not right for Huff, who decided to remain w/Thundering Herd".

You can look at it that way, or you can choose to look at it like we currently have a coach that is attractive enough for someone to want to take. Would I be happy if he left after 1 year? No! Am I going to be shocked if he leaves after 2-3 years? No! I've said for years, Marshall fans need to come to terms with the fact that this is not a long-term destination job. It is a good job, and if someone comes here and is successful, they will be plucked by a bigger school. Huff hasn't been successful enough here yet for him to leave IMO. But, anyone that can't see why schools are attracted to him are likely blinded by the dissatisfaction of his hire in the first place.

Huff was never seriously considered a candidate for that job. From what I know not sure he was formally interviewed. As always there was a lot of bad information and diversions in play. Mike Elko was the main target from the jump.

Hard to get excited about Huff. Seems as if he’s signing a great recruiting class so he can move along with them in the transfer portal.

I never have seen it as a long term job. We just got lucky with Pruett being from here and playing here.

I also don't care if Huff is a guy that other teams want if he's not here long enough for us to reap any benefit. What good does it do Marshall if he's gone before he's been here a year? I never thought he'd be here past 3-4 years. It would be nice if he actually won here and parlayed that into a good P5 and left us better than he found us.

No a hot name coach using us for a Motel 6 does nothing for us.

The tweet reads like it was Huff who ultimately turned them down because of "timing". What is that timing? How close was that timing from him accepting a job before we even played in a bowl game? How focused is our team going to be with the HC is out there looking for his way out. It's not like it's a once in a lifetime opportunity that opened up. It's Duke football. It's the bottom of the P5.

Worst case scenario is that another school pays for our next head coach for a year or so.

So, he should only entertain interest from "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunities? If (and there are already mixed reports as to how accurate any of the original tweet was) Duke contacted him, he would be a moron to not talk with them. They may not be Clemson, but they are still ACC. I hate that the timetable of most coaching changes completely disrupts the end the season, but it is what it is. Even Ole Bobby willingly did exactly what Huff did with Houston (right before a bowl game)- a mid major, not exactly a dream job I wouldn't think. It's the nature of the business.

If a company of note called any one of us and asked you to interview for a position, most would do it. It was a Zoom call people, and as someone else said, Elko was the primary target. Many complained that neither Doc or his coaches got a sniff from other schools. It's a new world in CFB.

Personally I think this will hurt recruiting next year. If I am recruiting against Marshall I am going to say don't go there the dude hasn't even been there a full season and is already looking for his next job. I mean if he had been here a few years that is different. This looks like he cant wait to get out of town

I was told that the new energetic HC was going to win conference titles and not be boring, uhm...before he left?
Oh wait, just as I have said for a while, he just needs to show he can be competent enough to manage a program and that the rest of college football doesn't weigh conference titles as an end all be all for program efficiency.

Good job, you all wanted this. If he wins the bowl game he may very well be gone the next day.

You mean Marshall isn’t Huffs forever job?!?!

You guys might as well get used to this. Have the kind of success we want to have. Someone will hire your coach, bottom line. Especially a young up and comer from the Saban tree.

I don’t think he’s realistically get one of these jobs after the season we had. But who wouldn’t interview for practice to start getting their name out there, if you were trying to move up in your profession?

This is the current state of college football. Best we can hope for is that Huff and whoever our future coaches are, are so motivated to get to the top that they elevate our program along with them.

Ask Oklahoma and Norte Dame fans if there are any more destination jobs left out there.

It is no secret that we are a stepping stone school. If Huff takes us to success over the next two years...maybe next year, a school with much bigger purse strings is coming after him. Period. Next man up. It is what it is.

That's a reasonable expectation and one of which most fans would agree. However, we're talking the possibility of him bolting before his first year, and I think that sends the wrong message to fans, alumni, recruits, etc.

Would you have been more excited if he had listened to your gripes about Wells and replaced him with Zban half way through the season?

I would’ve been more excited if Wells didn’t force that narrative to begin with. I’ll give Huff credit for going after a good QB recruit knowing Wells ain’t the guy

Shitty P5>>>mediocre g5
Nope. That's buying the snake oil. Jumping to a crappy P5 for the sake of being a t P5 can end your career in short order. The more wise play is build something here and grow your brand to parlay into a better P5 job.

If Alabama paid $1 million per year (AFTER incentives), and Duke paid $4 million, I’m going to Duke.
Then you're dumb. You can't win at Duke and you'd be out in under 5 years. At Bama you can get the best recruits, best money, and win giving your career mire longevity thus making more money.

Chasing a salary isn't the smartest move. Unless all you care about is a short term payout.

Not a single person ever thought or remotely expected Huff to be here longer than 3-5 seasons. No one.

So tell me how convenient this leaking out the day before early signing day is.

These are SEC-type shenanigans. Someone put that info out, despite it being irrelevant to the Duke job, simply to try to hurt Huff’s recruiting. There’s no other explanation for it.
Two thumbs up to you. After reading the post and the Twitter link that was the first thing I thought. Duke is teh toilet paper of the ACC when it comes to football.

Here's the best we can hope for: Huff gets us to the level where we want to be, then gets plucked, then we find an able coach to continue the success. Reference ND State.

Here's a different take on it..."The timing wasn't right" just MAY have been his way of saying that, 'Hey, I'm happy here at Marshall, I have a commitment to them and want to build this program before I look at something else'....
that may be the case, but it makes no sense whatsoever to interview at Duke if he is happy here.

This. My God, our fanbase has turned into a bunch of Sams.

Then he should have said that instead of "the timing just isn't right."

It was a poor decision on his part, as he knew word of this would get out. If he would have declined the interview and offered the same excuse, that would have sent a much more believable message to be interpreted as you are suggesting.

As is, he'd better start doing some major service recovery. I don't know what it is about some of these goons on here who act like he is coaching our program out of the goodness of his heart. The man is employed by Marshall University and Marshall is who gave him his first head coaching opportunity. He has a debt of gratitude owed to Marshall for this.

However, the expectation at Alabama is 43 times greater at Alabama and the competition you play against is much stiffer. Cutcliffe was there 14 years. Plus, the Duke job might propel you to bigger things. Don't get me wrong the Alabama job is much better and the top tier, but If Duke is paying me 3 or 4 times as much, I would take Duke. I would not put up with the bullshit and pressure at Bama for a million.

He's not going anywhere this year.
Because he isn't qualified. Not because he has any loyalty to the program.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think loyalty really exists these days, and I don't want a coach who plans to just stick around here forever. That only happens with duds like Holliday and Snyder. But I do expect a coach to have the decency to stick around long enough to make some improvements in the W-L columns before getting the fvck outta Dodge.
