Is this the start of a new standard excuse for athletes that choke and decide to quit in the competition?

Probably. I've got mental shit and could give up any moment. I just haven't yet for some reason.

Older I get, the more I think it's just a damn crap shoot. I don't know what my body and mind will take or do. Each day is just seeing what the hell it does. Don't know if I'll fall over dead, get some urge to walk in front of a bus or really break down and cry and sign up for a disability check.

The tarot cards said it was bad today. Said I couldn't win today. Maybe that's what they told her.

Whatever it is, she's out and lost. Whoever wins is better, simply for being able to do whatever the hell this is. Sometimes you're just a loser and that's it. She lost.

Gone are the days of winning one for the Gipper. Athletes are so mentally soft now days that they quit, cry, and blame the “Gipper” for being too hard on them.

White privilege

Wont be long before a mythical "injury" will be given as a the excuse why she walked off, quit, and let her team down.

I would think we will see her again when the individual competition begins. Her handlers know her reputation and legacy have taken a hit. As to pressure, when you sign the bottom line of contracts that will earn millions of dollars then you have taken ownership of all the pressure the press and public will place on you. In addition, do not wear GOAT adorned fashion if you are not prepared to handle the moniker.

Good call.

"Institutional racism" labeled her the GOAT. Unfair expectations.....
she was the GOAT

But, this should have been a move to say hey the are ripping the AMERICAN off with their biased scoring. But, it will turn into the bias scoring because she is black. Just wait.

She should have nutted up and finished and if you lose, you lose. Not sure what went on.

Biles is doing stuff that could kill her. She’s doing things no other woman is doing or really could do. After landing them In competition I’m sure the expectations for her in the olympics sky rocketed. Nerves/pressure got the best of her. We can’t fault her for that because it’s happened to all of us.

We can fault her for quitting on her team and walking off the floor because she was embarrassed for failing.

How can someone who is considered "the GOAT" (she gladly embraced the title for $$/endorsement deals) not actually embrace the pressure when it's time to perform? She now uses the "pressure" as an excuse to run from the sport/event she's trained 15+ years to excel at and profit from.

I dont fault her for having a bad night. We all do. I fault her for walking out of the gym, and leaving her team. Leaders and "champions" dont do that....I guess until now.

She didn’t pull a lebron and go to the locker room she came back out and was supportive of her team. I just don’t think it’s as cut and dry as she quit she’s a loser.
We will just have to agree to disagree. She essentially pulled a Lebron. Despite not having an injury. Despite her being scheduled to perform an additional event after her initial low scoring mess up.... she walked off, "because the pressure was too much". "GOATS" dont do that. The greatest thrive under the pressure. The greatest want the pressure.

Is she an incredibly gifted athlete? Yes. Did she have a bad night? Yes. Is she a GOAT? Not even close at this point. Why? She said it herself..."The pressure is just too great."

I am starting to agree. She could have been still considered the GOAT even if she had lost but tried. I am not so sure now. Looks like she may have just said screw it.

Having been around gymnastics I can say if your mind isn’t in it then you will injure yourself. You have to go balls out every time you do a skill, especially at that level. It’s not just pressure of the moment. She’s dealing with the Larry Nassar crap the verbal/physical abuse from coaches the lack of socialization at the olympics. On top of hey you have to do this skill that only guys do and it better be perfect. I think any of us would crack under all of that.

You keep making the case why she's ultimately not the "greatest".

She's not classified as "any of us". She's not classified as your average gymnast in the suburbs of Charlotte or Raleigh. She was and accepted the title, attention, and rewards of being classified as "THE GOAT".

As Americans' interest in the Olympics continues to wane....
And this Simone situation is one of the reasons why. Inherently, people dont want to watch this kind of action from those claiming to be the greatest at what they do. Whether it's NBA players blaming coaches for losing to France, or highly paid soccer teams losing after bitching about pay. It demonstrates a lack focus, preparation and desire to win. People want to root for winners.

She’s a beast. I’m sure she’s mentally tough or else she wouldn’t have made it this far.

For her to stop just is what it is. I don’t think it should be celebrated but I don’t think she should be seen as a coward or weak.

We’ve all fallen short. I just don’t like celebrating it.

Peripherally related but this book is an absolute gem that has shaped my attitude on resiliency , mental health, and culture.

I haven't seen anyone here specifically suggest she's "coward or weak". She did "quit" because (her words-paraphrasing) "the pressure was too great". Ok. Amazingly talented, one of the best at her sport? Absolutely. Bad night? Sure. Everyone has them. Suck it up. Dont walk off. Win as a team, lose as a team.

Let's just not continue pretending she is actually the GOAT or even worse now, the media narrative declaring her some type of hero for quitting under that pressure. That's just not what "greatness" does IMO.

It also happened to Tyson Fury. The man was on top of the world and the pressure got to him. He drank too much, started taking drugs, got really fat….and then learned how to manage it. The man is back to being a beast in the ring again and will openly talk about it.

A damn good point here.

Really and honestly, fighting to the death is the most admirable thing. Despite my obsession with suicide, for some reason I soldier on. I do stuff that will result in my just dropping dead someday, but I can't really see myself quitting if I'm doing a task.

Driving, working, going in the store. It's do it until you physically don't have it to give.

She got the yips

yeah I have a bigger problem with the making her out to be a hero stories than her having to withdraw because of the yips

This is the prime example of how everyone makes everything political today. You don't need to tell what you think about her quitting.... just tell me your political party and I'll know.

No matter what, she's going to end up with way more money and everything than we'll ever have.

Would I trade places with her? Nah. She wouldn't with me either though. My problem with it now is that it's over. Time to move on. I can't wait until three days from now when nobody will really care anymore.

She'll still get books, paid, Oprah hugging her, etc., but by and large it will be off the computer screen when I refresh the news pages.
