It’s games like this:

Wait so the penalty of having 5 less scholarships per season for 5 seasons was served under Pruett?

The scholarship reductions were not for 5 years, it was only for three years. More importantly the total amount of scholarships Marshall could have on the team was only reduced by 5 total. The NCAA max number of scholarship players on a team is 85, Marshall was reduced to just 80 for those three years. Why is this important to understand? Its because football teams are made up of 5 recruiting classes - players who are redshirting, freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. If you look at our roster you will see a mixture of guys that were recruited this year in 2019 as well as 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015. Even if you were limited to 20 scholarships a year for 5 years that is still 100 scholarship players you could have on the team when the limit is 85. Now with attrition you would naturally lose some of those guys so you realistically wouldn't be at 100. Then again the reductions were not for 5 years it was only for 3 years.

Now getting back to the actual reductions, those were served in spring of 2002, 2003 and 2004. Pruett then recruited the 2005 class which was back to full numbers before he retired. Snyder never had a single class where he could not have the full number of scholarship players either for that recruiting season or in total. I dont know why some of our fans keep insisting Pruett left and Snyder got stuck with the program on probation while Snyder was handicapped with the number of scholarship players he could have. Its just not true. Pruett as head coach served the penalty not Snyder.
