America has a new National Mammal: the amazing bison!

Thanks in part to the voices of thousands of wildlife supporters , Congress united to deliver a big win for a true American icon:they've passed the National Bison Legacy Act, making bison the official National Mammal of the United States!
A century ago, the bison had been hunted to the brink of extinction – but then wildlife advocates sprung into action. Generations of activists like you have fought for these incredible animals, and helped them make a dramatic comeback. I can't imagine an animal that better deserves a spot next to the bald eagle as a symbol of American resilience.
Bison – which live in all 50 states, and have long been important to our history and culture – are a great symbol of healthy ecosystems and our country's natural wonders. They're also a symbol of hope for threatened wildlife around the globe. While their numbers were hunted down to fewer than 1,000 by the late 1800s, the dedicated work of conservationists brought them back from the brink and reestablished them as a key part of the American ecosystem.
It's important that Congress knows that wildlife supporters are watching how they vote – and that we appreciate them for passing this law recognizing the amazing bison
