OK what’s the story here. A lot of hype before he arrived and then all kinds of kudos about his tryout. Plays in first game but not Hofstra. So is he hurt? Just not as good as was thought by many on here? Or is the the basketball version of Alex Thompson?

He didn’t get to play with everyone/learn the system all summer like most. He didn’t report until late August. In the EKU game, he looked like he was treading water mentally. Just not ready yet.

I find it interesting that Thieneman is leading the team weight lifts. I think I read that correctly on twitter. Per Dan
He did for a couple weeks in Sept until the new strength guy got here. We have a new man on board now.

No doubt that the late reporting hurt him. He can shoot great but is still learning both the offensive and defensive systems. They are having a tough time getting him to be as aggressive as they want. He will get there.

Byers will be ok... Hopefully by the end of the season he can contribute, but you could see the gears turning in his head against EKU. He was trying to just figure out where he needed to be on the floor rather than knowing that stuff and just playing.

Exactly. Our offense can't work that way. It is constant motion. No time for thinking. He is guilty of the same thing on the defensive end as well.
Danny says time and again it takes a year to learn it with most players. That is why he doesn't go after graduate transfers and not many JUCO's

Getting Beyers for three years was huge. We don't NEED him this year but we probably will in 2019 and 2020.

Disagree, but that's fine. We're an easy eight deep (nine if you count Sustic) without him and Dan won't go much further than that once C-USA play starts.

Very good point... Once we are in games that truly matter the rotation certainly wont go past nine guys.

Elmore, Burks, West, Williams, Bennett
Watson, Kinsey, George, Sustic

The only way we end up "needing" Byers to play big meaningful minutes this season is if there is an injury in the frontcourt. Other than that he can spend the season learning the system and working on his game during blowouts.

I would never play Sustic over Beyers. Beyers is better in every area.

If he can shoot like DD says it would be a nice boost in tourney time
He is a terrific stand alone shooter and very athletic. His upside is much higher than Sustic. Once he figures it out he will be fine and will help significantly.

If he is a player and shooter why does he need time to adjust? Marshall is strictly run and shoot and whoever is open let it fly. Why in the world would Byers need time to adjust to our game?

I would never say "never". Shoestich (phonetic) has more experience and is older. They are similar in ht & wt, but Shoe has that aggressive attitude
already. I think Shoe is faster down court as well. Don't get me wrong, I believe Byers is going to be really good! Just don't rush him. The best Coach is already here, evaluating his guys and making the calls on when & how much PT for the young ones....

bb - see earlier responses in this thread. These are the guys attending a good number of practices, so I trust what they are saying based on what they are seeing!

Understand that W-S BUT players (IF they are a player) can adjust without all the excuses.

In our system, you can't think. Everything is reactionary. The ball must always move, players must always move. And a player must go somewhere based off where the ball goes or another player moves. Everything is a read, not predetermined. If someone holds the ball a second too long on a swing around the arc, the defense recovers and what should be a wide open shot isn't there. If a player cuts into penetration because he read something wrong, our spacing is thrown off and the offense draws automatic help defense...clogs everything up.

One guy having to think of where to cut/pass the ball can bog down an offense and render everyone ineffective. It truly is a team game and why I love the brand of basketball Dantoni has brought here.

Despite what it may look like, the offense we employ isn't YMCA run around and fire shots... Watch the EKU game, Byers looked lost on offense because he didn't understand where he should be in relation to the basketball. It absolutely does take time and game experience to adjust to.

I would never play Sustic over Beyers. Beyers is better in every area.

By the end of the season I might agree with this, but right now Sustic is ahead in terms of being a better interior defender and knowing where he is supposed to be on the offensive end. Even if he isn't scoring, at least Sustic knows where his spots are and has the timing figured out.

There is a lot more to the system than just running and shooting. Beyers has talent, but there is a lot to learn in our system. Once he settles into the system he will do fine.

Sean we have a Freshmen playing. Your telling me Byers needs to learn to react in our system. Give me a break. He is either a player or he is not. Time will tell.

Any indication on Byers injury tonight. Per radio broadcast he came down on an opposing player's foot and had to be helped off the floor. Sounded like an ankle injury (sprain ?). Hopefully, he won't be hampered or out very long.

I watched the game online and he was in a lot of pain. He stayed down a couple of minutes and didn’t put any weight on that foot when he was helped off the court and went straight to the locker room.

However, unlike football, we’ll probably get the details of his injury in a couple of days.

we don't practice today but we will get the scoop at practice tomorrow. BTW, if you are wanting to attend practice at 2:30 Friday or 9:30 Saturday morning, it will be in Gullickson due to the conference volleyball tournament in The Cam.

It looked really bad on the replay but I notice he did put the foot down just before the camera pulled away so maybe . . . maybe not as bad as it looked.

It looked like he was holding the outside of his left foot. He was down for a few minutes and did not put his foot down when he was helped off.

This is where, hopefully, we'll see the benefit of our much touted
Sports Medicine Institute in the Cline Complex. Byers should be getting treatment in that state of the art facility as I type and perhaps will be back to playing shape sooner than later!!

Having done it myself (who of us hasn't?), the replay looked like the ankle rolled over pretty far. I would say sprained ankle. Seems like the college athletes heal up faster than I remember at that age .

College athletes today have access to treatment options, doctors and rehab facilities that kids never dreamed about even just 20 years ago... Im certain that Byers is getting the best treatment available.

It’s as if you don’t follow our men’s BB program at all.

Doesn't he remind you of a low-key version of Fever or BleedsGreen33 when it comes to the basketball team?

After a win, there was always a dig at the team in some form one of those two.

He hasn't sparked a 5 page discussion over a group of football players beating the basketball team in a game of basketball. So no matter how low-key you think his version is, I'm not sure he can be mentioned in the same breath as those basketball masters.
