Giving a two weeks notice Monday and taking a new job. Been with this company 13 years. New one offered more money, car package with a credit card for gas, maintenance , lodging, food, a cell phone, and no weekends work. Am I crazy to leave or should I go?

I read a lot of personal finance blogs and books. I'm not in the business world (I'm in health care), but all I ever read is that in the business world in the modern economy if you're not getting regular promotions then changing jobs is your best bet.

Companies don't have loyalty like they used to. So go looking out for you. Switching jobs I hear is the best way to up your salary (or at minimum make you employer match offers).

I believe that if I work hard and produce good things for my company then I will get recognized, promoted, and get generous salary increases. In 11 years, that has been the case. I have never felt compelled to look for another job, and I hope I never have to. My employer has been great to me, and has always rewarded my hard work in tangible ways. Therefore, my intent is to work my entire career there. I hope it works out that way.

Used to thank that way, I've been promoted 5 times in 13 years. I've since stalled out, that's not on my performance but on my managers. He's incompetent, and has not promoted one person in 3 years. He holds onto those who do their job for his own benefit. As proof, my team has won a company wide competition for 2 consecutive quarters, the last promotion went to the guy who finished dead last. We are getting too clickish, it's time for me to roll.

Assume you did research on new company, then go for it Marine... Take care of you and your family.

As an alternative you could possibly parlay the new job offer into a similar raise with your current company if you think they are worth staying with. A bit risky because they may fire you on the spot... But as an employer it will cost them time and money to hire and retrain someone to replace you so it is something to think about.

I know my old company quite well, they'll not offer me anything. They take these things personal.
