For my money the right approach was tying it to hospital availability. If we were going to overwhelm that then we had a problem and had to stay at some level of shut down.
Of course, knowing what we know now, had we “burned through” a lot of cases quickly, before the much less severe delta strain developed, we would’ve been trading a lot of mildly sick people for a lot of really sick people.
...and like you're saying too - decision making for what to do when the hospital in Lombari, Italy and Wuhon looked like war zones looks (and even NYC) looks very different from what things looked like later on in '21.
Mandates and school shut downs after that big wave of unknown when we figured out how to treat this instead of venting everyone and post-vax I look down more on than some of the lock downs that happened really early on.
It is better than living in other countries where if you go broke or have nothing to start with the government dont even help them. Be glad we take care of our old and disabled or our economy would be terrible.
It wasnt just old people who died during the pandemic and many more people would have died if we had not shut down. To think otherwise is foolish.
