I think we will have a sell out or close to it, like the Kansas State game.
I think there are a few things going on with Marshall that is having an effect on attendance.
Number 1 is live attendance is down everywhere. Other than your Ohio States, Alabama type programs I see a lot of empty seats even at P5 games.
Number 2 all of the years of MU being in small bad conferences have caught up to us. The MAC and this version of CUSA have been for the most part terrible. We play the majority of our games against teams nobody has heard of. We have a few good teams and the rest are directional schools that are awful. I know there is nothing we can do about this but the luster of playing the majority of our games against the bottom 100 of college football is taking its toll and we have been doing it since 1997.
Number 3 Local competition. Ohio State is 2 1/2 hours away and they play a Big 10 schedule, UK is 90 minutes away and they play an SEC schedule. Last but not least our fellow DI program in WV plays in the Big 12, and has had a pretty sustained pattern of being a known brand since the 90s. These schools play Oklahoma, Alabama, Michigan type teams almost every week while we play Old Dominion or Florida international. It’s a recipe for dwindling attendance.
Lastly we haven’t cultivated a big enough new fan base to replace all of our older fans that we have lost through death or illness. When the stadium first opened my family had 12 season tickets in section 109, and every week all 10 were filled by various members of my family. Plus my mom, dad, uncle and aunt and a couple of cousins would go to at least 2 away games per year. Now through death and illness and family like me moving away, I live in Boston there are only 4 of them who attend regularly and they don’t go to any away games.
I’m not worried about NC State we will have a big crowd for them but honestly especially if the weather isn’t good you aren’t going to have to worry about having more than 20K at the Joan. I don’t know what the answer is to fix it other than to say it may be the way it will be from now on.
