NC State attendance

That's where you're wrong, Random. A single promotional tent at Chilifest was surely the key to a NC State sellout.

The AD strikes out again.

Such a smartass answer. Any promotion helps. Anything to keep in fresh in the minds of people. Some people are very busy during the week so maybe they were waiting to buy their tickets when they got time. Well the booth is there and they can go ahead and buy their tickets. It's convenience. They don't have to make a separate trip down to the stadium or mess with it online. Or they may have decided to purchase a couple more tickets for friends or family. Just having it there keeps it on their minds. It's a simple way to advertise. Taked hardly any money to do it. They had no home game or away game so you can't tell me there aren't staff available to do it who would have otherwise had things to do yesterday.

Herdon2 - while it couldn’t have hurt to devote the effort to reserving a spot (were the booths free or did you have to pay?), bringing the tent, getting staff to work on the weekend, I also don’t believe it would have had an impact on this week’s game. Why? When folks are doing a “chillifest” like event, they aren’t focused on the future, even the near-future. They are there to sample the food, drink beer, listen to the music & have fun. They aren’t thinking football. It’s like a circus where the county Ag barn is turned into a business fair. You walk through, stop at the honey booth & pick up a jar of local honey because you love honey. You walk past the clean water & enviro-friendly pest control booths because you have zero interest.
It would make more sense to have a ticket tent set up at a pep rally in Pullman Square. The focus of the event is Herd football! People are there to hear the band, watch the cheerleaders and maybe pick up an autograph for their kid. They are thinking about whether or not they want to go to the game this weekend & boom! There is the ticket booth, just waiting to make it easy to commit.
Sorry - long answer but I am pretty confident that is the thought process of us humans......
Go Herd! Tip the tractors!!

Honest question - what kind of impact in tickets sold do you think a booth at Chilifest would have? Would they sell 50? 100? 500? Be realistic.

less than 50

Ok, let's call it an even 50.

50 tickets at $40 a piece (I doubt many would buy $100 chair backs on a whim at Chilifest) adds $2000 to sales. I'd imagine $2000 doesn't go far in today's FBS world. You'd probably spend that $2k in marketing materials you'd hand out for free during Chilifest anyways (so little-to-no net income as a result).

50 tickets would also represent .01% of your stadium's capacity. Is that even noticeable?

Finally, for a fanbase that blasts the "small-time" mindset of the athletic department how well received do you think this would be?

Marshall can do what it wants, I couldn't care less. Just dont ridicule an athletic department by suggesting ideas that aren't any better or more practical than what is already being done.

If you really want a sellout you do some kind of promotion that actually has an impact (not a booth at a chilli con carnival).

That said there are possibilities on how to sell out big games that MU has never realized. Ive always been critical of how our athletic dept doesnt reach out to local kids enough. If you want to build a fan base, thats how you do it. Put some cutesy program in the elementary schools where if you read X amount of books you get a free ticket, or if you make the honor roll, etc. If kids are getting in free parents are more likely to shell out the money for a ticket. Plus once in the gate kids are going to want drinks, hotdogs, etc.

MU gets good PR for promoting early childhood education, plus more butts in seats and hopefully grows the local following some.

Its too late to worry about it for this year either way. Gameday attendance at this point is dependent on weather and how many NCSU fans leave disaster stricken eastern NC for a trip to Huntington.

Duke has wrapped up a 3 year redo of Wallace Wade and the new official capacity is 40,004.
It is, in my opinion, the only stadium I’ve seen in person that looks exactly as the architects envisioned. It is absolutely beautiful.
WW capacity before was 33k except games that temporary seats were installed. Such as the Rose Bowl, Alabama, etc.

I've never attended a game at Duke but I've heard pretty much the same compliments from others who have gone.

Perhaps they should host a bowl game instead of someplace like Shreveport Louisiana or Montgomery Alabama. Or maybe host the FCS Championship game instead of watching it be played in a soccer stadium.

People in general, and this includes Herd fans, are more fair weather than ever before. And I mean that literally, because you can be assured the game isnt going to sell out early people wait until Friday to decide whether or not they want to go.

If its rainy or cold, fans are more likely to stay home and watch it on their 60 inch flat screen.

The days of getting excited to take your kids to the game come hell or high water are over. Its easier, cheaper and more comfortable to watch it on TV if its not 72 degrees and mostly sunny.

One has to ask if blacking out the home games would help?

Interesting ideas but doubt there is any appetite for either.

Back to the subject of attendance, what was the exact attendance for the HERD-EKU game? Bet it was one of the larger CUSA home crowds of that week.

Don’t remember the announcement but I think it was over 25,000

I stand corrected ....... 24,304

MU was 2nd in attendance with 24304. We beat FAU vs Air Force by 200 fans.
UTSA far and away the leader at 42,071 vs Baylor

The buzz is gone with Herd fans. Not the excitement there once was. I don't see much over 30k max.
You say that because you care So much more about the basketball program that has always been behind the football program. We support Dan and his boys. They have been getting more love than the football team. No need to cut the program. Football is king in these parts when we have good teams. Basketball team going to the tourney is big as big as our national title in 92. Or should I say beating witicha state. The wv loss brought us back down. Alot of work ahead but we finally got good players. Resign Dan

Did I tell you Louisa native geard parker coaches dukes wide receivers. Jason Michael left the titans to coach qb's and receivers at Arizona. He made huge money in the NFL. Arizona must pay well

No you didn’t tell me but I know he is on staff. David Cutcliffe threw him a lifeline and a no personal screwup leash and Gerard is sticking to the plan. Duke’s receivers are off to a good start and Parker deserves proper credit. He is very fortunate to work for Cutcliffe, personally and professionally.

For 8 years I never missed a football game at home or on the road. So if you think I am only basketball you are very much mistaken.
As a Herd fan I catch most home women's basketball, volleyball and many baseball games as well.

In my opinion the buzz is partially gone because of CUSA. There are no local rivalries and whether you want to agree or not, THAT MATTERS. I for one hate the fact that we don't play Ohio every single year. Its an awesome rivalry (or could be). I also want to play Miami every year and the MAC fits our mold, our fan base, our geography. When you have local rivalries there is much more about a game than just trying to accomplish more than the year before. You think Florida and Georgia have attendance problems at the cocktail party when both teams are 2-2? Hell no. I HATE Cusa and I wish we never left the MAC for it. I realize the reasons and at the times seemed like a smart idea because you are either growing or dying in this sport. But 20/20... I would give anything to have the MAC back and have those exciting local rivalries.

Do we know how many NCSU fans will show? That is usually the determination on whether or not we get close to a sellout. I'll be shocked if its below 35k. I would imagine NCSU will bring more than Purdue, and that game was 38k.

In talking to a long time NC State fan, she says very few. They only take 1,000 to 1,500 to games in Durham, 10 miles away.

She estimates 300-500 max.

Parker is a good man and is no drunk. Never knew him to ever get in trouble. They got them a gem. You will see.How bout them cats green duke. Michael to Arizona.+

King - I believe the Michigan guy was totally pulling your chain. He has his own troubles in Ann Arbor to deal with..... black is the new maize!!

I figured as much. I tried to keep the sarcasm going, at least subtly, but I may have missed the mark.

I've received two emails today announcing new ticket discount promotions for the NC State game. Maybe someone in the cdc athletic department read this thread?

Number 3 Local competition. Ohio State is 2 1/2 hours away and they play a Big 10 schedule, UK is 90 minutes away and they play an SEC schedule. Last but not least our fellow DI program in WV plays in the Big 12, and has had a pretty sustained pattern of being a known brand since the 90s. These schools play Oklahoma, Alabama, Michigan type teams almost every week while we play Old Dominion or Florida international. It’s a recipe for dwindling attendance.

I try to make it back for one game a year, but man it is hard to get excited to come see some of our opponents. Tickets, food, gas, hotel...it adds up. Add in I can get a free ticket to UofL or IU about anytime I want one, and yeah it's just not logical sometimes.

IDGAF what Sam says, I would rather come see ECU, UCF, UC, Houston, USF than some of the shitbirds in C-USA.

NC State would be great but it is my weekend rotation to work.
